TEAM STATS

Possession

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 10 of our 36 misses = 27.8%
They rebounded 13 of their 32 misses = 40.6%

Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)
We got 10 points on 10 O-Rebs = 1.000 points/O-Reb
They got 22 points on 13 O-Rebs = 1.692 points/O-Reb

Unforced Turnovers
(Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers)
We had 10 turnovers – 4 steals = 6 unforced
They had 9 turnovers – 4 steals = 5 unforced

Points per Takeover
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)
We had 6 points from 9 takeovers = 0.667 points/takeaway
They had 15 points from 10 takeovers = 1.500 points/takeaway

Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeover: [Second Chance Point s+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 16 points in 19 unsettled situations = 0.842 points
They had 37 points in 23 unsettled situations = 1.608 points

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 29 + 10 = 39
They had 39 + 9 = 48

Hustle Stats
One of the radio sponsors gives an award to the team that had the most “hustle stats”, which they define as rebounds + steals + blocks. I decided to keep track of that, too:
We had 29 + 7 + 4 = 40
They had 39 + 6 + 4= 49

Scoring

Shooting
(Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 22 for 39 on twos, (56.4%), 6 for 24 on threes (25.0%) and 17 for 19 on frees (89.5%)
They were 22 for 38 on twos, (57.9%), 11 for 26 on threes (42.3%) and 15 for 17 on frees (88.2%)
Combined percentages were: 1709 (564 + 250 + 895) vs. 1884 (579 + 423 + 882) = -175

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum”
POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made
OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots)
TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint)
FBP = fast break points
POTO= points off turnovers

We had 32 PIP, 24 POP, 18 OL, 6 TZ, 6 POTO, 10 FBP
They had 38 PIP, 45 POP, 33 OL, 12 TZ, 15 POTO, 11 FBP

Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 10 FBP in 30 opportunities (33.3%)
They scored 11 FBP in 36 opportunities (30.5%)

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 42 FCP and 10 SCP
They had 44 FCP and 22 SCP

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 73 points and our bench scored 6 points
Their starters scored 68 points and their bench scored 24 points

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 14 of our 28 field goals = 50.0%
They assisted 25 of their 33 field goals = 75.8%

Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 79 points in 71 possessions = 1.113 points/ possession
They scored 92 points in 70 possessions = 1.314 points/possession
It was a 141 possession game.

If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession:
We scored 79 points in 72 possessions = 1.097 points/ possession
They scored 92 points in 72 possessions = 1.278 points/possession

Team Shooting Efficiency

(Points minus missed field goals and free throws)

We scored 79 points, missed 35 field goals and missed 2 free throws = net +42
They scored 92 points, missed 31 field goals and missed 2 free throws = net +59
(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)

We scored 79 on 39 two point attempts, 24 three point attempts and 19 free throw attempts = 79 of a possible 169 points = 46.7% of possible points scored.
They scored 92 on 38 two point attempts, 26 three point attempts and 17 free throw attempts = 92 of a possible 171 points = 53.8% of possible points scored.

Breakdown by Quarters
(Points scored between the beginning of the game and the 10 minute mark of the first half, then halftime, then the 10 minute mark of the second half, the end of regulation and then overtime of there was one)

17-19, 18-21, 21-28, 23-24

Fouls

(Two point shots and free throws attempted per times fouled.)
We attempted 39 two point shots, attempted 19 free throws and were fouled 19 times = 2.05; 1.00
They attempted 38 two point shots, attempted 17 free throws and were fouled 19 times = 2.11; 0.94
We were more likely to get calls when attempting two point shots and got more shots per foul.

Comments

- Bourama Sidibe’s 33NP was our second highest total of the season to Elijah Hughes’ 35 in the first Georgia Tech game.

- It was the third straight game where Bourama sat us down in the first minute of the first half with a lay-up. All told he has a dozen sit downs, (first or second half), on the season. Only Buddy Boeheim (16) and Elijah Hughes (15) are ahead of him.

- A huge state: we got outscored 16-37 in unsettled situations, (after turnovers and offensive rebounds). We lost the game by 13 points.

- Neither team played a lot of defense inside. We hit 56% of our two pointers and they hit 58%. We had more points in the paint, 38-32.

- Our defense went from giving up 0.700 points per possession against Pittsburgh to 1.314 against North Carolina.

- It was all about the threes. We were 22/39 on two point shots. They were 22 of 38. We were 17 for 19 from the line. They were 15 of 17. We were 6 of 24 from the arc. They were 11 of 26.

- The Tar Heels won every quarter but they were all close except maybe the third: 17-19, 18-21, 21-28, 23-24. But that disguises an 0-16 run in the first half.
