I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of the non-conference season, the ACC season and the post season. Net Points (points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls) (season totals double-checked from Cuse.com stats on 3/1) Elijah Hughes +23NP in 38 minutes = +510/1175 = +17.4NP/40 for season Bourama Sidibie +22NP in 35 minutes = +303/767 = +15.8NP/40 for season Buddy Boeheim +12NP in 36 minutes = +307/1140 = +10.8NP/40 for season Quincy Guerrier +9NP in 19 minutes = +204/651 = +12.5NP/40 for season Joe Girard +9NP in 35 minutes = +312/1056= +11.8NP/40 for season Marek Dolezaj +6NP in 24 minutes = +378/1062 = +14.2NP/40 for season Brycen Goodine +1NP in 4 minutes = +25/201 = +5.0NP/40 for season Howard Washington 0NP in 5 minutes = +39/148 = +10.5NP/40 for season DNP coach’s decision Jesse Edwards 0NP in 0 minutes = +60/146 = +16.4NP/40 for season Injured Robert Braswell 0NP in 0 minutes = +13/48 = +10.8NP/40 for season Jalen Carey 0NP in 0 minutes = -3/23 = -5.2NP/40 for season Suspended None Redshirting John Bol Ajak Out for the year None Left Team None Awards Offensive Dude of the Game, (O-Dog) (Points plus assists) Elijah Hughes 27 points and 2 assists = 29 Shooting Efficiency (Points minus missed field goal and free throw attempts) Elijah Hughes 27 points – 11 mfg – 0 mft = +16 Scoring Efficiency (Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points) Bourama Sidibie 12 points of 16 = 75.0% Sat Us Down (Who scored the first SU basket of each half?) 1st Half- Marek Dolezaj lay-up at 19:57 2nd Half- Elijah Hughes jumper at 19:04 TACO Bell MVP (Who scored the point that got us to 70 points) Bourama Sidibie lay-up at 8:17 My Man (Who played the most minutes?) Elijah Hughes 38 minutes TEAM STATS Possession Rebounding (Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that) We rebounded 10 of our 38 misses = 26.3% They rebounded 14 of their 42 misses = 33.3% Effective Offensive Rebounding (Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds) We got 8 points on 10 O-Rebs = 0.800 points/O-Reb They got 12 points on 14 O-Rebs = 0.857 points/O-Reb Unforced Turnovers (Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers) We had 8 turnovers – 0 steals = 8 unforced They had 18 turnovers – 11 steals = 7 unforced Points per Takeover (Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had) We had 27 points from 18 takeovers = 1.500 points/takeaway They had 4 points from 8 takeovers = 0.500 points/takeaway Unsettled Situations (Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeover: [Second Chance Point s+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers) We had 35 points in 28 unsettled situations = 1.250 points They had 16 points in 22 unsettled situations = 0.727 points Manufactured Possessions (One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers) We had 38 + 18 = 56 They had 42 + 8 = 50 Hustle Stats One of the radio sponsors gives an award to the team that had the most “hustle stats”, which they define as rebounds + steals + blocks. I decided to keep track of that, too: We had 38 + 11 + 3 = 52 They had 42 + 0 + 1= 43 Scoring Shooting (Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws) We were 21 for 39 on twos, (53.8%), 7 for 21 on threes (33.3%) and 18 for 28 on frees (64.3%) They were 18 for 44 on twos, (40.9%), 2 for 16 on threes (12.5%) and 11 for 13 on frees (84.6%) Combined percentages were: 1514 (538 + 333 + 643) vs. 1380 (409 + 125 + 846) = -134 Points (PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum” POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots) TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint) FBP = fast break points POTO= points off turnovers We had 34 PIP, 29 POP, 21 OL, 8 TZ, 27 POTO, 15 FBP They had 34 PIP, 8 POP, 6 OL, 2 TZ, 4 POTO, 2 FBP Fast Break Percentage (FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals) We scored 15 FBP in 42 opportunities (35.7%) They scored 2 FBP in 29 opportunities (6.9%) First Chance/Second Chance (FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.) We had 40 FCP and 12 SCP They had 28 FCP and 8 SCP Starters/Bench (Total points – bench points = starters points) Our starters scored 72 points and our bench scored 9 points Their starters scored 49 points and their bench scored 4 points Assists (The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted) We assisted 15 of our 28 field goals = 53.6% They assisted 9 of their 20 field goals = 45.0% Team Offensive Possession Efficiency (Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions) We scored 81 points in 69 possessions = 1.174 points/ possession They scored 53 points in 68 possessions = 0.779 points/possession It was a 137 possession game. If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession: We scored 81 points in 72 possessions = 1.125 points/ possession They scored 53 points in 66 possessions = 0.803 points/possession Team Shooting Efficiency (Points minus missed field goals and free throws) We scored 81 points, missed 32 field goals and missed 10 free throws = net +39 They scored 53 points, missed 40 field goals and missed 2 free throws = net +11 (Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot) We scored 81 on 40 two point attempts, 25 three point attempts and 19 free throw attempts = 81 of a possible 174 points = 46.7% of possible points scored. They scored 53 on 32 two point attempts, 31 three point attempts and 15 free throw attempts = 53 of a possible 172 points = 30.8% of possible points scored. Breakdown by Quarters (Points scored between the beginning of the game and the 10 minute mark of the first half, then halftime, then the 10 minute mark of the second half, the end of regulation and then overtime of there was one) 19-10, 24-12, 21-21, 17-10 Fouls (Two point shots and free throws attempted per times fouled.) We attempted 39 two point shots, attempted 28 free throws and were fouled 18 times = 2.17; 1.56 They attempted 44 two point shots, attempted 13 free throws and were fouled 17 times = 2.58; 0.76 We were more likely to get calls when attempting two point shots and we got more shots per foul- by a large margin. Comments - Steals: 11-0 - Points off turnovers: 27-4 - Fast break Points:: 15-2 - These stats make me wasn’t to cry. Firstly because a team that has struggled all season played such a wonderful game against a team that had tormented them for years. Secondly because we reached this level of play – and the season ended. Maybe that’s a good point for it to end but still… - Our shooting percent ages were unremarkable, (46.7% overall, 33.3% from three, 64.3% from the line). Theirs were abominable (33.3%, 12.5%, 84.6%) except from the line. That and the above stats enabled us to dominate the game. Both factors were directly related to intensity with which both teams played. - Who says we’re a donut team? In two games against the powerful North Carolina front line, points in the paint were 66-72. - Amazing that we got 28 free throws out of being fouled 18 times and they got only 13 free throws out of being fouled 17 times. We were fouling them before they could get a shot off.
