I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of each month. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.)

Net Points
(points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls)

Quincy Guerrier +26NP in 37 minutes = +191NP in 323 minutes = +23.7NP/40 for season
Alan Griffin +14NP in 32 minutes = +151NP in 329 minutes = +18.4NP/40 for season
Buddy Boeheim +13NP in 38 minutes = +71NP in 244 minutes = +11.6NP/40 for season
Marek Dolezaj +5NP in 35 minutes = +146NP in 354 minutes = +16.5NP/40 for season
Kadary Richmond +4NP in 16 minutes = +101NP in 223 minutes = +18.1NP/40 for season
Joe Girard +4NP in 37 minutes = +89NP in 316 minutes = +11.3NP/40 for season
Robert Braswell +3NP in 9 minutes = +11NP in 87 minutes = +5.1NP/40 for season
Jesse Edwards -2NP in 7 minutes = -1NP in 19 minutes = -2.1NP/40 for season

DNP coach’s decision
Frank Anselem 0NP in 0 minutes = +5NP in 26 minutes = +7.7NP/40 for season
John Bol Ajak 0NP in 0 minutes = -1NP in 29 minutes = -1.4NP/40 for season

Offensive Dude of the Game, (O-Dog)
(Points plus assists)
Quincy Guerrier 23 points and 1 assists = 24

Shooting Efficiency
(Points minus missed field goal and free throw attempts)
Quincy Guerrier 23 points – 9 mfg – 1mft = +13

Scoring Efficiency
(Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points)
Quincy Guerrier 23 points of 47 = 48.9%

My Man
(Who played the most minutes?)
Buddy Boeheim 38 minutes

TEAM STATS

Possession

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 10 of our 34 misses = 24.4%
They rebounded 24 of their 45 misses = 53.3%

Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)
We got 4 points on 10 O-Rebs = 0.400 points/O-Reb
They got 24 points on 24 O-Rebs = 1.000 points/O-Reb

Unforced Turnovers
(Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers)
We had 14 turnovers – 7 steals = 7 unforced
They had 11 turnovers – 7 steals = 4 unforced

Points per Takeover
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)
We had 12 points from 11 takeovers = 1.091 points/takeaway
They had 9 points from 11 takeovers = 0.818 points/takeaway

Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeover: [Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 16 points in 21 unsettled situations = 0.762 points
They had 33 points in 35 unsettled situations = 0.943 points

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 31 + 11 = 42
They had 48 + 14 = 62

Hustle Stats
One of the radio sponsors gives an award to the team that had the most “hustle stats”, which they define as rebounds + blocks + steals. I decided to keep track of that, too:
We had 38 + 3 + 7 = 58
They had 32 + 6 + 4 = 42

Scoring

Shooting
(Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 18 for 31 on twos, (58.1%), 10 for 29 on threes (34.5%) and 9 for 12 on frees (75.0%)
They were 24 for 49 on twos, (49.0%), 5 for 24 on threes (20.8%) and 18 for 23 on frees (78.3%)
Combined percentages were: 581 + 345 + 750 = 1,676 vs. 490 + 208 + 783 = 1,481 = +195

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum”
POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made
OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots)
TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint)
FBP = fast break points
POTO= points off turnovers

We had 24 PIP, 42 POP, 30 OL, 12 TZ, 12 POTO, 11 FBP
They had 42 PIP, 21 POP, 15 OL, 6 TZ, 9 POTO, 11 FBP

Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 11 FBP in 37 opportunities (29.7%)
They scored 11 FBP in 37 opportunities (29.7%)

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 51 FCP and 4 SCP
They had 28 FCP and 24 SCP

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 69 points and our bench scored 6 points.
Their starters scored 52 points and their bench scored 29 points.

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 13 of our 28 field goals = 46.4%
They assisted 18 of their 29 field goals = 62.1%

Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 75 points in 70 possessions = 1.071 points/ possession
They scored 81 points in 71 possessions = 1.141 points/possession
It was a 141 possession game.

If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession:
We scored 75 points in 66 possessions = 1.136 points/ possession
They scored 81 points in 84 possessions = 0.964 points/possession

Team Shooting Efficiency

(Points minus missed field goals and free throws)

We scored 75 points, missed 32 field goals and missed 3 free throws = net +40
They scored 81 points, missed 34 field goals and missed 5 free throws = net +42

(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)

We scored 75 on 31 two point attempts, 29 three point attempts and 12 free throw attempts = 75 of a possible 161 points = 46.6% of possible points scored.
They scored 81 on 49 two point attempts, 24 three point attempts and 23 free throw attempts = 81 of a possible 193 points = 42.0% of possible points scored.

Fouls

(Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.)
We attempted 31 two point shots and were fouled 17 times = 1.82
They attempted 49 two point shots and were fouled 16 times = 3.06
At this rate, if we’d taken 49 two point shots, we’d have been fouled 27 times.

Comments

- Possession is 9/10s of the law and basketball. We were -20 in manufactured possessions, (our rebounds + takeovers).

- We’ve lost the “Unsettled situations’ stat for five games in a row, which is disappointing for a good passing team.

- We made a higher percent age of our two points shots and our three point shots and shot 75% from the line. We outscored them 51-28 in our initial sets. The problem was that their misses became passes when they rebounded 24 out of 45 of them and they got 24 second chance points to our 4.

- The Heels also got to the line 23 times to our 12, even though they committed more fouls: 17 to 16. They had 6 more two point field goals. We had 5 more treys. But they scored 9 more free throws and that’s what won the game.

- It’s interesting that we scored twice as many Points Outside the Paint, (POP) but five fewer assists. Most assists are from jump shots because the shooter hasn’t moved to a different spot to shoot.
