TEAM STATS

Possession

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 13 of our 37 misses = 35.1%
They rebounded 13 of their 35 misses = 37.1%

Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)
We got 14 points on 13 O-Rebs = 1.077 points/O-reb
They got 16 points on 13 O-Rebs = 1.231 points/O-reb

Unforced Turnovers
(Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers)
We had 4 turnovers – 2 steals = 2 unforced
They had 12 turnovers – 8 steals = 4 unforced

Points per Takeover
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)
We had 18 points from 12 takeovers = 1.500 points/takeaway
They had 9 points from 4 takeovers = 2.250 points/takeaway

Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeover: [Second Chance Point s+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 32 points in 25 unsettled situations = 1.280 points
They had 25 points in 17 unsettled situations = 1.471 points

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 35 + 12 = 47
They had 37 + 4 = 41

Hustle Stats
One of the radio sponsors gives an award to the team that had the most “hustle stats”, which they define as rebounds + steals + blocks. I decided to keep track of that, too:
We had 35 + 4 + 8 = 47
They had 37 + 3 + 2= 42

Scoring

Shooting
(Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 17 for 33 on twos, (51.5%), 10 for 26 on threes (38.5%) and 18 for 24 on frees (75.0%)
They were 5 for 9 on twos, (55.6%), 17 for 46 on threes (37.0%) and 9 for 12 on frees (75.0%)
Combined percentages were: 1650 (515 + 385 + 750) vs. 1676 (556 + 370 + 750) = -26

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum”
POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made
OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots)
TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint)
FBP = fast break points
POTO= points off turnovers

We had 30 PIP, 34 POP, 30 OL, 4 TZ, 18 POTO, 10 FBP
They had 10 PIP, 51 POP, 51 OL, 0 TZ, 9 POTO, 8 FBP

Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 10 FBP in 34 opportunities (29.4%)
They scored 8 FBP in 29 opportunities (27.6%)

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 40 FCP and 14 SCP
They had 37 FCP and 16 SCP

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 69 points and our bench scored 13 points
Their starters scored 64 points and their bench scored 6 points

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 22 of our 27 field goals = 81.5%
They assisted 19 of their 22 field goals = 86.4%

Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 82 points in 61 possessions = 1.344 points/ possession
They scored 70 points in 60 possessions = 1.167 points/possession
It was a 121 possession game.

If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession:
We scored 82 points in 61 possessions = 1.344 points/ possession
They scored 70 points in 61 possessions = 1.148 points/possession

Team Shooting Efficiency

(Points minus missed field goals and free throws)

We scored 82 points, missed 32 field goals and missed 6 free throws = net +44
They scored 70 points, missed 33 field goals and missed 3 free throws = net +34

(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)

We scored 82 on 33 two point attempts, 26 three point attempts and 24 free throw attempts = 82 of a possible 168 points = 48.8% of possible points scored.
They scored 70 on 9 two point attempts, 46 three point attempts and 12 free throw attempts = 70 of possible 168 points = 41.7% of possible points scored.

Breakdown by Quarters
(Points scored between the beginning of the game and the 10 minute mark of the first half, then halftime, then the 10 minute mark of the second half, the end of regulation and then overtime of there was one)

14-13, 21-20, 26-21, 21-16

Fouls

(Two point shots and free throws attempted per times fouled.)
We attempted 33 two point shots, attempted 24 free throws and were fouled 20 times = 1.65; 1.20
They attempted 9 two point shots, attempted 12 free throws and were fouled 15 times = 0.60; 0.80
They were more likely to get calls when attempting two point shots but we got more shots per foul.

Comments

- Against Oakland, we ‘sat down’ at 16:28 of the first half and 16:27 of the second half. That scared me: if we took forever to get going against North Florida, the best three point shooting team in the country, we could find ourselves out of the game and never get back into it. But in this game we sat down 19:42 and 19:35 and were off and running.

- I should have brought up this stat in my “Upside”: Marek, who came in 31 for 52 from the foul line was 7 for 7 in this game- and all of them just dropped in. None of them ‘took the tour’.

- JB earlier this year: “We don’t’ have a ‘Big Three’ on this team.” Three guys played 40 minutes: Elijah Hughes, Buddy Boeheim and Joe Girard. Actually, he’s right. Marek would surely have played 40 if he hadn’t had foul trouble. I guess we have a “Big Four”.

- This game was a classic example of JB’s formula for success in ‘possessions’: We were out-rebounded by 2 but had 8 fewer turnovers so we came out +6.

- It’s a good thing we had only 4 turnovers because they scored 9 points off of them. If we’d had 12 turnovers, as they did, at that rate, the Ospreys would have had 27 points off turnovers.

- Ironically, we won this game because we had more of an inside game than the opponent. We hit 7 fewer threes but 12 more two and 9 more free throws even though both teams were 75% from the line because we got to the line twice as often.

- In a close game, we won every quarter. The other two games where we did that: Bucknell and Georgia Tech.

- A gap of 1.65 to 0.60 in two point shots divided by fouls called is a big one (+1.05). By comparison, the Georgetown game where we were so mad about the officiating was 2.14-1.57 = +0.57. We had a big advantage vs. Seattle: 0.92-2.31 = -1.38. But the biggest difference was in the Virginia game: 3.71-2.00 = +1.71. (You want the lower number, meaning the refs were calling more fouls on your two pointers than on theirs).

- Yup- if every shot for both teams went in the final score would have been 168-168. They might still be playing.
