I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of each month. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.) This is limited to recruited scholarship players only.

Net Points
(points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls)

Average net points/40 by position, (based on averaging 20+ minutes per game), since the 1980-81 season:
Centers 18.6; Power Forwards: 18.4; Small Forwards: 16.1, Shooting Guards: 13.3; Point Guards: 13.5

Jesse Edwards +21NP in 24 minutes = +64NP in 86 minutes = +29.8NP/40 for season
Judah Mintz +21NP in 27 minutes = +47NP in 90 minutes = +20.9NP/40 for season
Joe Girard +11NP in 27 minutes = +32NP in 85 minutes = +15.1NP/40 for season
Maliq Brown +10NP in 22 minutes = +17NP in 37 minutes = +18.4NP/40 for season
Justin Taylor +9NP in 14 minutes = +9NP in 40 minutes = +9.0NP/40 for season
Benny Williams +6NP in 25 minutes = +20NP in 86 minutes = +9.3NP/40 for season
Mounir Hima +2NP in 10 minutes = +11NP in 24 minutes = +18.3NP/40 for season
Quadir Copeland +2NP in 13 minutes = +7NP in 36 minutes = +7.8NP/40 for season
Chris Bell +1NP in 12 minutes = +5NP in 36 minutes = +5.6NP/40 for season
Symir Torrence -1NP in 19 minutes = +21NP in 65 minutes = +12.9NP/40 for season
Peter Carey -2NP in 7 minutes = -1NP in 11 minutes = -3.6NP/40 for season

DNP coach’s decision
John Bol Ajak 0NP in 0 minutes = +2NP in 4 minutes = +20.0NP/40 for season

Offensive Dude of the Game, (O-Dog)
(Points plus assists)
Joe Girard 21 points and 3 assists = 24

Shooting Efficiency
(Points minus missed field goal and free throw attempts)
Jesse Edwards 19 points – 2mfg – 0mft = +17

Scoring Efficiency
(Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points)
Jesse Edwards 19 points of 23 = 82.6%

My Man
(Who played the most minutes?)
Joe Girard and Judah Mintz 27 minutes

TEAM STATS

Possession

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 9 of our 33 misses = 27.3%
They rebounded 14 of their 46 misses = 36.4%

Unsettled Situations
[Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 22 points in 27 unsettled situations = 0.815 points/situation
They had 18 points in 27 unsettled situations = 0.667 points/situation

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 41 + 18 = 59
They had 38 + 13= 51

Scoring

Shooting
(Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 26 for 46 on twos, (56.5%), 6 for 14 on threes (42.9%) and 6 for 11 on frees (54.5%)
They were 11 for 27 on twos, (40.7%), 8 for 32 on threes (25.0%) and 2 for 13 on frees (15.4%)

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum”
POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made
OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots)
TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint)
FT = Free Throws

We had 44 PIP, 26 POP, 18 OL, 8 TZ, 6 FT
They had 20 PIP, 26 POP, 24 OL, 2 TZ, 2 FT

Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 13 FBP in 48 opportunities (27.1%)
They scored 0 FBP in 42 opportunities (0.0%)

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 53 FCP and 4 SCP
They had 38 FCP and 8 SCP

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 65 points and our bench scored 11 points.
Their starters scored 20 points and their bench scored 28 points.

Efficiency

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 14 of our 32 field goals = 43.8%
They assisted 16 of their 19 field goals = 84.2%

Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 76 points in 69 possessions = 1.101 points/ possession
They scored 48 points in 69 possessions = 0.696 points/possession
It was a 138-possession game.

If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession:
We scored 76 points in 65 possessions = 1.169 points/ possession
They scored 48 points in 65 possessions = 0.738 points/possession

Team Shooting Efficiency

(Points minus missed field goals and free throws)

We scored 76 points, missed 28 field goals and missed 5 free throws = net +43
They scored 48 points, missed 40 field goals and missed 11 free throws = net -3

(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)

We scored 76 on 46 two-point attempts, 14 three-point attempts and 11 free throw attempts = 76 of a possible 145 points = 52.4% of possible points scored.
They scored 48 on 27 two-point attempts, 32 three-point attempts and 13 free throw attempts = 48 of a possible 163 points = 29.4% of possible points scored.

Fouls

(Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.)
We attempted 46 two-point shots and were fouled 14 times = 3.29
They attempted 27 two-point shots and were fouled 13 times = 2.08

Comments:

- I was amazed that we got only 4 ‘second chance points’ compared to 8 for the significantly shorter team. Of course we had fewer offensive rebounds: 9 to 14, which also seems strange. The key is that they missed more shots than we did, (32 to 24).

- Getting out-scored by their bench 11-28 isn’t so bad when our starters out-scored theirs 65-20.

- Northeastern had an amazing assist percentage, 84% to our paltry 44%. But that’s because most of their points came on jump shots for which the shooter didn’t happen to dribble.

- The refs let ‘em play- that is, they let Northeastern play. The vast majority of fouls come on two point field goal attempts. We were fouled just 14 times and yet had 46 two point field goal attempts. They were fouled 13 times on just 27 shots inside the arc. At that rate, if they’d attempted 46 two pointers the refs would have whistled 22 fouls on us.
