TEAM STATS

Possession

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 15 of our 31 misses = 48.4%
They rebounded 10 of their 31 misses = 32.3%

Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)
We got 11 points on 15 O-Rebs = 0.733 points/O-reb
They got 7 points on 10 O-Rebs = 0.700 points/O-reb

Unforced Turnovers
(Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers)
We had 10 turnovers – 3 steals = 7 unforced
They had 11 turnovers – 4 steals = 7 unforced

Points per Takeaway
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)
We had 11 points from 11 takeaways = 1.000 points/takeaway
They had 10 points from 10 takeaways = 1.000 points/takeaway

Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeaway: [Second Chance Point + Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 22 points in 26 unsettled situations = 0.846 points
They had 17 points in 20 unsettled situations = 0.850 points

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 46 + 11 = 57
They had 36 + 10 = 46

Scoring

We were 16 for 39 on twos, (41.0%), 12 for 29 on threes (41.4%) and 4 for 5 on frees (80.0%)
They were 9 for 25 on twos, (36.0%), 11 for 33 on threes (33.3%) and 11 for 17 on frees (64.7%)

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP –free throws made, TREY: points from three point shots, TZ= Twilight Zone, which is POP – TREY, two point jumpers from outside the paint, FBP = fast break points POTO= points off turnovers)
We had 16 PIP, 52 POP, 36 TREY, 16 TZ, 11 POTO, 2 FBP
They had 14 PIP, 37 POP, 33 TREY, 4 TZ, 10 POTO, 2 FBP

Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 2 FBP in 38 opportunities (5.3%)
They scored 2 FBP in 36 opportunities (5.6%)

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 55 FCP and 11 SCP
They had 42 FCP and 7 SCP

Last Possessions
(Points scored on the last full possession of a half, a game or an overtime period.)

(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 11 of our 28 field goals = 39.3%
They assisted 16 of their 20 field goals = 80.0%

Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 72 points in 66 possessions = 1.090 points/ possession
They scored 62 points in 67 possessions = 0.925 points/possession
It was a 133 possession game.

Team Shooting Efficiency

(Points minus missed field goals and free throws)

We scored 72 points, missed 40 field goals and 1 missed free throws = net 31
They scored 62 points, missed 38 field goals and 6 missed free throws = net 18

(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)

We scored 72 on 39 two point attempts, 29 three point attempts and 5 free throw attempts = 72 of a possible 170 points = 42.4% of possible points scored.
They scored 62 on 25 two point attempts, 33 three point attempts and 17 free throw attempts = 62 of a possible 166 points = 37.3% of possible points scored.

Breakdown by Quarters
(Points scored between the beginning of the game and the 10 minute mark of the first half, then halftime, then the 10 minute mark of the second half, the end of regulation and then overtime of there was one)

15-20, 22-18, 16-11, 19-13

Fouls

(Two point shots and free throws attempted per times fouled.)
We attempted 39 two point shots, attempted 5 free throws and were fouled 12 times = 3.25; 0.42
They attempted 25 two point shots, attempted 17 free throws and were fouled 15 times = 1.67; 1.13
They were more likely to get calls when attempting two point shots and got more free throws out of it when we were fouled –by a large margin.

Comments

- Frank Howard hit two second half field goals: 57 seconds in and with 57 seconds left.

- Getting 48% of our misses was easily the best offensive rebounding we’ve done this season. The previous high was 43% vs. Colgate.

- We missed 42 field goal attempts -25 from within the arc. One 2 of them defensive fouls were called, (so officially we missed 40, 23 from two point range). That’s 5%, including 8% of our two point misses. The two calls came with 4:13 and 34 seconds left, respectively. We weren’t fouled on our first 35 misses. The difference between the likelihood of drawing a foul, (3.25-1.67 = 1.58) was easily the largest of the season, (second place was an advantage in out favor vs. Colgate (2.00-0.79 = 1.21). There were three games where the difference in free throws granted per fouls was greater than 0.71. (1.13-0.42).

- I got the impression that that was a fast paced game but it was not a fast break game: only 4 fast break points between the two teams.

- We won the game from the twilight zone: 16-4, +12 in a game we won by 10.

- Assists are the one statistic that is an opinion: we had 11 on 28 makes while they had 16 on only 20 makes. Both teams shot the same sort of shots, mostly jumpers. We didn’t go to the basket from way out as we usually do. There was usually a pass before a shot for both teams.

- Much of the pre-game talk was about how Notre Dame is down to 7 scholarship players, yet their bench out-scored ours 6-13.
