I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of the non-conference season, the ACC season and the post season. Net Points (points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls) Elijah Hughes +27NP in 31 minutes = +341/712 = +19.2NP/40 for season Joe Girard +19NP in 40 minutes = +200/593 = +13.5NP/40 for season Bourama Sidibie +15NP in 31 minutes = +161/451 = +14.3NP/40 for season Quincy Guerrier +13NP in 18 minutes = +105/338 = +12.4NP/40 for season Marek Dolezaj +4NP in 31 minutes = +251/641 = +15.7NP/40 for season Buddy Boeheim +4NP in 36 minutes = +193/673 = +11.5NP/40 for season Brycen Goodine +5NP in 4 minutes = +12/123 = +3.9NP/40 for season DNP coach’s decision Jesse Edwards 0NP in 0 minutes = +36/87 = +16.6NP/40 for season Injured Robert Braswell 0NP in 0 minutes = +13/48 = +10.8NP/40 for season Jalen Carey 0NP in 0 minutes = -3/23 = -5.2NP/40 for season Howard Washington 0NP in 0 minutes = +35/103 = +13.6NP/40 for season Suspended None Redshirting John Bol Ajak Out for the year None Left Team None Awards Offensive Dude of the Game, (O-Dog) (Points plus assists) Elijah Hughes 26 points and 3 assists = 29 Shooting Efficiency (Points minus missed field goal and free throw attempts) Elijah Hughes 26 points – 10 mfg – 0 mft = +16 Scoring Efficiency (Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points) Bourama Sidibie 12 points of 12 = 100.0% Sat Us Down (Who scored the first SU basket of each half?) 1st Half- Bourama Sidibie lay-up at 19:35 2nd Half- Buddy Boeheim lay-up at 19:45 TACO Bell MVP (Who scored the point that got us to 70 points) Buddy Boeheim jumper at 5:02 My Man (Who played the most minutes?) Joe Girard and Elijah Hughes 40 minutes TEAM STATS Possession Rebounding (Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that) We rebounded 14 of our 36 misses = 38.25% They rebounded 12 of their 39 misses = 30.8% Effective Offensive Rebounding (Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds) We got 13 points on 14 O-Rebs = 0.929 points/O-Reb They got 13 points on 12 O-Rebs = 1.083 points/O-Reb Unforced Turnovers (Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers) We had 8 turnovers – 3 steals = 5 unforced They had 7 turnovers – 6 steals = 1 unforced Points per Takeover (Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had) We had 10 points from 7 takeovers = 1.429 points/takeaway They had 16 points from 8 takeovers = 2.000 points/takeaway Unsettled Situations (Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeover: [Second Chance Point s+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers) We had 23 points in 21 unsettled situations = 1.095 points They had 29 points in 20 unsettled situations = 1.450 points Manufactured Possessions (One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers) We had 41 + 7 = 48 They had 34 + 8 = 42 Hustle Stats One of the radio sponsors gives an award to the team that had the most “hustle stats”, which they define as rebounds + steals + blocks. I decided to keep track of that, too: We had 41 + 4 + 6 = 51 They had 34 + 5 + 3= 42 Scoring Shooting (Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws) We were 23 for 40 on twos, (57.5%), 8 for 26 on threes (30.8%) and 14 for 17 on frees (82.4%) They were 18 for 32 on twos, (56.25%), 13 for 36 on threes (36.1%) and 7 for 10 on frees (70.0%) Combined percentages were: 1589 (639 + 250 + 700) vs. 1360 (455 + 405 + 500) = +229 Points (PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum” POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots) TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint) FBP = fast break points POTO= points off turnovers We had 36 PIP, 34 POP, 24 OL, 10 TZ, 10 POTO, 8 FBP They had 26 PIP, 49 POP, 39 OL, 10 TZ, 16 POTO, 3 FBP Fast Break Percentage (FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals) We scored 8 FBP in 37 opportunities (21.6%) They scored 3 FBP in 30 opportunities (10.0%) First Chance/Second Chance (FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.) We had 49 FCP and 13 SCP They had 59 FCP and 13 SCP Starters/Bench (Total points – bench points = starters points) Our starters scored 72 points and our bench scored 12 points Their starters scored 56 points and their bench scored 26 points Assists (The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted) We assisted 13 of our 31 field goals = 41.9% They assisted 23 of their 39 field goals = 74.1% Team Offensive Possession Efficiency (Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions) We scored 84 points in 68 possessions = 1.235 points/ possession They scored 82 points in 68 possessions = 1.135 points/possession It was a 136 possession game. If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession: We scored 84 points in 74 possessions = 1.135 points/ possession They scored 82 points in 73 possessions = 1.123 points/possession Team Shooting Efficiency (Points minus missed field goals and free throws) We scored 84 points, missed 35 field goals and missed 3 free throws = net +46 They scored 82 points, missed 37 field goals and missed 3 free throws = net +42 (Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot) We scored 84 on 40 two point attempts, 26 three point attempts and 17 free throw attempts = 71 of a possible 175 points = 48.0% of possible points scored. They scored 82 on 32 two point attempts, 36 three point attempts and 10 free throw attempts = 69 of a possible 182 points = 45.1% of possible points scored. Breakdown by Quarters (Points scored between the beginning of the game and the 10 minute mark of the first half, then halftime, then the 10 minute mark of the second half, the end of regulation and then overtime of there was one) 19-30, 27-12, 22-18, 16-22 Fouls (Two point shots and free throws attempted per times fouled.) We attempted 40 two point shots, attempted 17 free throws and were fouled 14 times = 2.86; 1.21 They attempted 32 two point shots, attempted 10 free throws and were fouled 14 times = 2.29; 0.71 They were more likely to get calls when attempting two point shots but we got more shots per foul. Comments - Notre Dame took more advantage of takeovers than we did: 16 points from 8 takeovers vs. 10/7 for us. Overall they got 29 points from 20 unsettled situations to 23 in 21 for us. I think having an inside scorer like Mooney helps. - It doesn’t have to be a three pointer for these two jump shooting teams to launch the ball: both had 10 points from the Twilight Zone, (between the paint and the arc). - The Irish had 10 more First Chance Points and the same number of Second Chance points. There’s no such thing as Third Chance points so how did we win? We beat down court on the fast break for 5 more points and drove to the basket enough to get 7 more free throw attempts, all of which we made.
