I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of each month. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.) This is limited to recruited scholarship players only. Net Points (points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls) Average net points/40 by position, (based on averaging 20+ minutes per game), since the 1980-81 season: Centers 18.6; Power Forwards: 18.4; Small Forwards: 16.1, Shooting Guards: 13.3; Point Guards: 13.5 Jesse Edwards +30NP in 40 minutes = +176NP in 247 minutes = +28.5NP/40 for season Joe Girard +15NP in 38 minutes = +63NP in 259 minutes = +9.7NP/40 for season Justin Taylor +7NP in 30 minutes = +39NP in 131 minutes = +11.9NP/40 for season Judah Mintz +6NP in 38 minutes = +64NP in 249 minutes = +10.3NP/40 for season John Bol Ajak +4NP in 18 minutes = +12NP in 58 minutes = +8.3NP/40 for season Chris Bell +2NP in 10 minutes = +19NP in 170 minutes = +4.5NP/40 for season Benny Williams 0NP in 22 minutes = +42NP in 232 minutes = +7.2NP/40 for season Symir Torrence 0NP in 4 minutes = +31NP in 127 minutes = +9.8NP/40 for season DNP coach’s decision Maliq Brown 0NP in 0 minutes = +26NP in 50 minutes = +20.8NP/40 for season Peter Carey 0NP in 0 minutes = -2NP in 20 minutes = -4.0NP/40 for season Quadir Copeland 0NP in 0 minutes = +7NP in 48 minutes = +5.8NP/40 for season Mounir Hima 0NP in 0 minutes = +29NP in 61 minutes = +19.0NP/40 for season Injured or ill and couldn’t play None Suspended None Redshirting None Out for the year None Left Team None Awards Offensive Dude of the Game, (O-Dog) (Points plus assists) Jesse Edwards 22 points and 1 assists = 23 Shooting Efficiency (Points minus missed field goal and free throw attempts) Jesse Edwards 22 points – 5mfg – 0mft = +17 Scoring Efficiency (Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points) Jesse Edwards 22 points of 32 = 68.8% My Man (Who played the most minutes?) Jesse Edwards 40 minutes TEAM STATS Possession Rebounding (Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that) We rebounded 5 of our 30 misses = 16.7% They rebounded 12 of their 37 misses = 32.4% Unsettled Situations [Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers) We had 21 points in 15 unsettled situations = 1.400 points/situation They had 23 points in 16 unsettled situations = 1.438 points/situation Manufactured Possessions (One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers) We had 30 + 10 = 40 They had 37 + 4 = 41 Scoring Shooting (Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws) We were 25 for 40 on twos, (62.5%), 3 for 18 on threes (16.7%) and 3 for 4 on frees (75.0%) They were 12 for 27 on twos, (44.4%), 11 for 33 on threes (33.3%) and 4 for 5 on frees (80.0%) Points (PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum” POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots) TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint) FT = Free Throws We had 34 PIP, 25 POP, 9 OL, 16 TZ, 3 FT They had 18 PIP, 39 POP, 33 OL, 6 TZ, 4 FT Fast Break Percentage (FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals) We scored 4 FBP in 36 opportunities (11.1%) They scored 0 FBP in 32 opportunities (0.0%) First Chance/Second Chance (FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.) We had 47 FCP and 8 SCP They had 40 FCP and 17 SCP Starters/Bench (Total points – bench points = starters points) Our starters scored 55 points and our bench scored 7 points. Their starters scored 45 points and their bench scored 16 points. Efficiency Assists (The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted) We assisted 12 of our 28 field goals = 42.9% They assisted 15 of their 23 field goals = 65.2% Team Offensive Possession Efficiency (Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions) We scored 62 points in 59 possessions = 1.051 points/ possession They scored 61 points in 65 possessions = 1.017 points/possession It was a 124-possession game. If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession: We scored 62 points in 60 possessions = 1.033 points/ possession They scored 61 points in 62 possessions = 0.984 points/possession Team Shooting Efficiency (Points minus missed field goals and free throws) We scored 62 points, missed 30 field goals and missed 1 free throws = net +31 They scored 61 points, missed 37 field goals and missed 1 free throws = net +23 (Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot) We scored 62 on 40 two-point attempts, 18 three-point attempts and 4 free throw attempts = 62 of a possible 138 points = 44.9% of possible points scored. They scored 61 on 27 two-point attempts, 33 three-point attempts and 5 free throw attempts = 61 of a possible 158 points = 38.6% of possible points scored. Fouls (Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.) We attempted 40 two-point shots and were fouled 6 times = 6.67 They attempted 27 two-point shots and were fouled 9 times = 3.00 Comments: - Jesse’s playing at an All-American level, (28.5 NP/40), but he needs help. (next two highest with 100+ minutes: Taylor 11.9 an Mintz 10.3). - Maliq Brown: get healthy- Please! He’s got 26NP in 50 minutes to 12 in 58 for John Bol Ajak. - Jesse Edwards had 22 points and 14 rebounds but his biggest start was: no fouls. The way the refs called the game helped, (and may have hurt Jesse in other ways), but still, lift one to Jesse. - He’s the first player this year to sweep all the ‘awards’, including “My Man”. - More stunning numbers: We had just 5 offensive rebounds but made up for it with just 4 turnovers. We attempted only 4 free throws. Notre Dame attempted only 5. There were only 4 fest break points and we had ‘em. - We attempted 40 two point shots and 18 threes and got fouled 6 times. They attempted 27 two point shots and 33 threes and got fouled 9 times. It was the 7th straight game where the ratio of two point attempts to fouls called favored the other team.
