Team Stats:
(I’ve decided to put the team that won the stat in bold and ties in italics.)

POSSESSION

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)

We rebounded 14 of our 40 misses = 35.0%
They rebounded 16 of their 50 misses = 32.0%

Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)

We got 11 points on 14 O-Rebs = 0.786 points/O-reb
They got 8 points on 16 O-Rebs = 0.500 points/ O-reb

Unforced Turnovers
(Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers)

We had 11 turnovers – 6 steals = 5 unforced
They had 9 turnovers – 6 steals = 3 unforced

Points per Takeaway
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)

We had 5 points from 9 takeaways = 0.556 points/takeaway
They had 2 points from 11 takeaways = 0.182 points/takeaway

Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeaway: [Second Chance Point + Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)

We had 16 points in 23 unsettled situations = 0.696 points
They had 10 points in 27 unsettled situations = 0.370 points

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)

We had 48 + 9 = 57
They had 42 + 11= 53

Scoring

Shooting
(shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)

We were 16 for 39 on twos, (41.0%), 3 for 15 on threes (20.0%) and 19 for 26 on frees (73.1%)
They were 9 for 31 on twos, (29.0%), 9 for 34 on threes (26.5%) and 10 for 14 on frees (71.4%)

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP –free throws made, TREY: points from three point shots, TZ= Twilight Zone, which is POP – TREY, two point jumpers from outside the paint, FBP = fast break points POTO= points off turnovers)

We had 30 PIP, 11 POP, 9 TREY, 2 TZ, 5 POTO, 8 FBP
They had 14 PIP, 31 POP, 27 TREY, 4 TZ, 2 POTO, 6 FBP

Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)

We scored 8 FBP in 51 opportunities (15.7%)
They scored 6 FBP in 41 opportunities (14.6%)

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)

We had 22 FCP and 11 SCP
They had 31 FCP and 8 SCP

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)

Our starters scored 38 points and our bench scored 22 points
Their starters scored 47 points and their bench scored 8 points

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)

We assisted 14 of our 19 field goals = 73.7%
They assisted 14 of their 18 field goals = 77.8%

Team Offensive Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)

We scored 60 points in 63 possessions = 0.952 points/ possession
They scored 55 points in 64 possessions = 0.859 points/possession
It was a 127 possession game. (We are averaging 133 a game in regulation.)

Breakdown by Quarters
(Points scored between the beginning of the game and the 10 minute mark of the first half, then halftime, then the 10 minute mark of the second half, the end of regulation and then overtime of there was one)

10-14, 12-6, 16-11, 22-19

Fouls

(Two point shots, points in paint and free throws attempted per times fouled.)

We attempted 39 two point shots, scored 30 points in the paint, attempted 26 free throws and were fouled 18 times = 2.17; 1.67; 1.44
They attempted 31 two point shots, scored 14 points in the paint, attempted 14 free throws and were fouled 16 times = 1.94; 0.875; 0.875

They were more likely to get calls when attempting two point shots or scoring in the paint but we got more free throws out of it when fouled.

Comments:

- Bourama Sidibie got 27 of his 62NP for the season today. And Howard Washington got 9 of his 24NP.

- Including the injured Matthew Moyer, 7 of our 8 available recruited players are averaging at least 11NP per 40 minutes. My normal rule of thumb is that if you are in double fingers you are good enough to be a starter, (which doesn’t mean you will if somebody else is better). That’s a strong percentage and a good number of useful players. And the one guy who missed, Howard Washington (8.6) is a useful reserve. He’s just not ready to start yet.

- This was only the fifth game this year, (and 2nd in the last 17 games), in which no one played the entire 40 minutes.

- The teams were horrible at taking advantage of offensive rebounds and turnovers. SU converted 23 unsettled situation into 16 points and Pittsburgh pathetically could produce only 10 points in 27 situations. Our performance was our second worst of the season to St. Bonaventure, ((20 in 32). Pitt’s was the worst of the season, breaking their own record from two games ago, 97 from 14). The toothless Panthers had 1 second chance point in that game and just 2 points from turnovers in this game.

- We were 5 for 17, (29% after 69% in the last game), inside the arc in the first half, 11 for 22 in the second. That improvement won us the game.

- 11 points outside the paint, (POP) was a season low and -20 compared to the opponent’s POP (31) tied for the worst deficit, (Maryland was 17-37). We won both games!

- We lost First Chance Points for the first time since the Wake Forest game with our lowest output of the season: only 22 points on our initial sets.

- We also lost “starter points” for the first time since the Wake Forest game, largely because Sidibie out-performed Chukwu.

- It’s interesting that we had one of our highest percentage of assisted baskets, (14 of 19) in a game where our POP was the lowest of the year. Assists normally come from success jump shots because players rarely dribble after receiving the passes that lead to jump shots. We had a higher assit ratio only against Texas southern (80.8% vs. 73.7%)
