I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of each month. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.) Net Points (points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls) Alan Griffin +25NP in 32 minutes = +176NP in 361 minutes = +19.5NP/40 for season Quincy Guerrier +25NP in 38 minutes = +216NP in 361 minutes = +23.9NP/40 for season Marek Dolezaj +14NP in 39 minutes = +160NP in 393 minutes = +16.2NP/40 for season Buddy Boeheim +10NP in 40 minutes = +81NP in 284 minutes = +11.4NP/40 for season Woody Newton 0NP in 2 minutes = +38NP in 78 minutes = +19.5NP/40 for season Robert Braswell 0NP in 8 minutes = +11NP in 95 minutes = +4.6NP/40 for season Kadary Richmond -1NP in 18 minutes = +100NP in 241 minutes = +16.6NP/40 for season Joe Girard - 1NP in 22 minutes = +88NP in 338 minutes = +10.4NP/40 for season Jesse Edwards -2NP in 1 minutes = -3NP in 20 minutes = -6.0NP/40 for season DNP coach’s decision Frank Anselem 0NP in 0 minutes = +5NP in 26 minutes = +7.7NP/40 for season John Bol Ajak 0NP in 0 minutes = -1NP in 29 minutes = -1.4NP/40 for season Chaz Owens Injured and couldn’t play Bourama Sidibie 0NP in 0 minutes = +1NP in 4 minutes = +10.0NP/40 for season Suspended Redshirting None (that we know of) Out for the year None Left Team None Awards Offensive Dude of the Game, (O-Dog) (Points plus assists) Alan Griffin 28 points and 1 assists = 29 Shooting Efficiency (Points minus missed field goal and free throw attempts) Alan Griffin 28 points – 8 mfg – 0mft = +20 Scoring Efficiency (Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points) Marek Dolezaj 14 points of 20 = 70.0% My Man (Who played the most minutes?) Buddy Boeheim 40 minutes TEAM STATS Possession Rebounding (Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that) We rebounded 11 of our 42 misses = 26.1% They rebounded 16 of their 40 misses = 40.0% Effective Offensive Rebounding (Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds) We got 13 points on 11 O-Rebs = 1.027 points/O-Reb They got 18 points on 16 O-Rebs = 1.125 points/O-Reb Unforced Turnovers (Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers) We had 5 turnovers – 4 steals = 1 unforced They had 6 turnovers – 2 steals = 4 unforced Points per Takeover (Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had) We had 7 points from 6 takeovers = 1.167 points/takeaway They had 9 points from 5 takeovers = 1.800 points/takeaway Unsettled Situations (Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeover: [Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers) We had 20 points in 17 unsettled situations = 1.176 points They had 27 points in 21 unsettled situations = 1.286 points Manufactured Possessions (One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers) We had 35 + 6 = 41 They had 47 + 5 = 52 Hustle Stats One of the radio sponsors gives an award to the team that had the most “hustle stats”, which they define as rebounds + blocks + steals. I decided to keep track of that, too: We had 35 + 9 + 2 = 46 They had 47 + 4 + 4 = 55 Scoring Shooting (Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws) We were 24 for 45 on twos, (53.3%), 3 for 22 on threes (13.6%) and 19 for 22 on frees (86.4%) They were 23 for 44 on twos, (52.3%), 8 for 23 on threes (34.8%) and 26 for 32 on frees (81.3%) Combined percentages were: 533 + 136 + 864 = 1,533 vs. 523 + 348 + 813 = 1,684 = -151 Points (PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum” POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots) TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint) FBP = fast break points POTO= points off turnovers We had 38 PIP, 19 POP, 9 OL, 10 TZ, 7 POTO, 6 FBP They had 40 PIP, 30 POP, 24 OL, 6 TZ, 9 POTO, 18 FBP Fast Break Percentage (FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals) We scored 6 FBP in 22 opportunities (27.3%) They scored 18 FBP in 24 opportunities (75.0%) First Chance/Second Chance (FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.) We had 38 FCP and 13 SCP They had 34 FCP and 18 SCP Starters/Bench (Total points – bench points = starters points) Our starters scored 74 points and our bench scored 2 points. Their starters scored 89 points and their bench scored 7 points. Assists (The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted) We assisted 13 of our 28 field goals = 46.4% They assisted 18 of their 29 field goals = 62.1% Team Offensive Possession Efficiency (Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions) We scored 76 points in 71 possessions = 1.070 points/ possession They scored 96 points in 72 possessions = 1.333 points/possession It was a 143 possession game. If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession: We scored 76 points in 77 possessions = 0.987 points/ possession They scored 96 points in 82 possessions = 1.171 points/possession Team Shooting Efficiency (Points minus missed field goals and free throws) We scored 76 points, missed 40 field goals and missed 3 free throws = net +33 They scored 96 points, missed 36 field goals and missed 6 free throws = net +54 (Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot) We scored 76 on 45 two point attempts, 22 three point attempts and 22 free throw attempts = 76 of a possible 178 points = 42.7% of possible points scored. They scored 96 on 44 two point attempts, 23 three point attempts and 32 free throw attempts = 96 of a possible 189 points = 50.8% of possible points scored. Fouls (Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.) We attempted 45 two point shots and were fouled 18 times = 2.50 They attempted 44 two point shots and were fouled 21 times = 2.10 At this rate, if they’d taken 45 two point shots, they’d have been fouled 21 times. Comments - We have some very good players on this team. Seven are averaging 10+ NP/40 minutes, my somewhat arbitrary minimum for an adequate starter and five of them are 15+, including Quincy Guerrier who is performing at an All-American level at 23.9. But we have some basic weaknesses at center and point guard that hold us back. Also, when the effort lags as it did today, it doesn’t matter how good you are when you are playing well. - We have out-rebounded every team we’ve beaten - and been out-rebounded by double figures by every team we’ve lost to. - We out-shot them from two point range and at the line but we couldn’t out-shoot them from the arc, which was supposed to be an advantage for us. - It isn’t often that our starters get out-scored but they did here, 74-89. We complain about JB not playing his bench but neither did Pitt in this game. The ‘benches’ (not that there is actually a bench) scored only 9 of the 172 points played in this game.
