I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of each month. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.) This is limited to recruited scholarship players only. Net Points (points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls) Average net points/40 by position, (based on averaging 20+ minutes per game), since the 1980-81 season: Centers 18.6; Power Forwards: 18.4; Small Forwards: 16.1, Shooting Guards: 13.3; Point Guards: 13.5 Benny Williams +20NP in 34 minutes = +171NP in 594 minutes = +11.5NP/40 for season Jesse Edwards +17NP in 34 minutes = +567NP in 932 minutes = +24.3NP/40 for season Judah Mintz +15NP in 36 minutes = +349NP in 958 minutes = +14.6NP/40 for season Joe Girard +13NP in 38 minutes = +338NP in 996 minutes = +13.6NP/40 for season Quadir Copeland +3NP in 23 minutes = +22NP in 152 minutes = +5.8NP/40 for season Mounir Hima 0NP in 6 minutes = +51NP in 195 minutes = +10.5NP/40 for season Maliq Brown -1NP in 6 minutes = +242NP in 529 minutes = +18.3NP/40 for season Symir Torrence -2NP in 4 minutes = +103NP in 322 minutes = +12.8NP/40 for season Justin Taylor -2NP in 17 minutes = +112NP in 467 minutes = +9.6NP/40 for season DNP coach’s decision Chris Bell 0NP in 0 minutes = +95NP in 548 minutes = +6.9NP/40 for season John Bol Ajak 0NP in 0 minutes = +34NP in 122 minutes = +11.1NP/40 for season Injured or ill and couldn’t play None Suspended None Redshirting Peter Carey 0NP in 0 minutes = -2NP in 20 minutes = -4.0NP/40 for season Out for the year None Left Team Awards Offensive Dude of the Game, (O-Dog) (Points plus assists) Benny Williams 24 points and 0 assists = 24 Shooting Efficiency (Points minus missed field goal and free throw attempts) Benny Williams 24 points – 7mfg – 3mft = +14 Scoring Efficiency (Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points) Judah Mintz 16 points of 25 = 64.0% My Man (Who played the most minutes?) Joe Girard 38 minutes TEAM STATS Possession Rebounding (Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that) We rebounded 11 of our 30 misses = 36.7% They rebounded 18 of their 38 misses = 47.3% Unsettled Situations [Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers) We had 19 points in 16 unsettled situations = 1.188 points/situation They had 46 points in 30 unsettled situations = 1.533 points/situation Manufactured Possessions (One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers) We had 31 + 5 = 36 They had 37 + 11 = 48 Scoring Shooting (Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws) We were 19 for 40 on twos, (47.5%), 9 for 16 on threes (56.3%) and 17 for 24 on frees (70.8%) They were 16 for 27 on twos, (59.3%), 16 for 41 on threes (39.0%) and 19 for 22 on frees (86.4%) Points (PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum” POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots) TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint) FT = Free Throws We had 28 PIP, 37 POP, 27 OL, 10 TZ, 17 FT They had 28 PIP, 52 POP, 48 OL, 4 TZ, 19 FT Fast Break Percentage (FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals) We scored 7 FBP in 24 opportunities (29.2%) They scored 15 FBP in 28 opportunities (53.6%) First Chance/Second Chance (FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.) We had 47 FCP and 11 SCP They had 40 FCP and 25 SCP Starters/Bench (Total points – bench points = starters points) Our starters scored 76 points and our bench scored 6 points. Their starters scored 71 points and their bench scored 28points. Efficiency Assists (The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted) We assisted 13 of our 28 field goals = 46.4% They assisted 27 of their 32 field goals = 84.4% Team Offensive Possession Efficiency (Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions) We scored 82 points in 67 possessions = 1.224 points/ possession They scored 99 points in 65 possessions = 1.523 points/possession It was a 132-possession game. If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession: We scored 82 points in 67 possessions = 1.224 points/ possession They scored 99 points in 78 possessions = 1.269 points/possession Team Shooting Efficiency (Points minus missed field goals and free throws) We scored 82 points, missed 28 field goals and missed 7 free throws = net +47 They scored 99 points, missed 36 field goals and missed 3 free throws = net +60 (Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot) We scored 82 on 40 two-point attempts, 16 three-point attempts and 24 free throw attempts = 82 of a possible 152 points = 53.9% of possible points scored. They scored 99 on 27 two-point attempts, 41 three-point attempts and 22 free throw attempts = 99 of a possible 199 points = 49.7% of possible points scored. Fouls (Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.) We attempted 40 two-point shots and were fouled 17 times = 2.35 They attempted 27 two-point shots and were fouled 16 times = 1.69 Comments: - We played 9 scholarship players. Four of them scored 65NP. The other five were -2 in 56 minutes played. - It may surprise some people but Benny Williams has now been our net points champion in three games this year: Colgate, BC 1 and now Pitt 2. What a difference it would have made if he could have played like that in the other games. - We got crushed in unsettled situations, 30 such situation vs. 16 and 1.533 points surrendered per situation vs. 1.188 gained resulting in a 19-46 deficit that was impossible to overcome. - We’d won “manufactured possessions 13 times in 26 games before this losing streak. In the streak it’s been 39-50, 35-49 and 36-48. - We actually had quite a night shooting three pointers and outshot our hosts 56% to 39%. But they out-scored by 21 points form the arc anyway due to the sheer volume of three pointers, (16 vs. 41). - And that opened up the middle for them, (59% on two pointers), as it did for Duke (also 59%) and Clemson (69%). We had to move out to cover them and it left Jesse all alone to take them on inside. - We had more POP in 8 of our first 21 games. We’ve now lost that battle 8 times in a row by a combined 211-315, 13 points per game. - We went back to winning the “starters” stat, 76-71. Unfortunately, our bench got waxed, 6-28. - We scored a higher percent age of possible point, (if all shots had gone in), 50% to 50%. But their shot had a possibility of scoring 47 more points than ours did, (152-199) so they won by 17. - The refs let ‘em play but if we’d gotten calls at the rate Pitt did, (compared to two point attempts), we’d have been fouled 24 times, not 17. And that “shooting foul” before the half was ridiculous. Still, a balanced whistle would not have been enough to overcome the other factors, above.
