I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of each month. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.)

Net Points
(points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls)

(season totals double-checked from Cuse.com stats on 3/1)

Alan Griffin +17NP in 37 minutes = +130NP in 264 minutes = +19.7NP/40 for season
Marek Dolezaj +15NP in 40 minutes = +128NP in 279 minutes = +18.4NP/40 for season
Robert Braswell +10NP in 20 minutes = +2NP in 61 minutes = +1.3NP/40 for season
Buddy Boeheim +5NP in 32 minutes = +38NP in 169 minutes = +9.0NP/40 for season
Joe Girard +4NP in 32 minutes = +63NP in 242 minutes = +10.4NP/40 for season
Quincy Guerrier +2NP in 17 minutes = +155NP in 256 minutes = +24.2NP/40 for season
Kadary Richmond +2NP in 19 minutes = +96NP in 201 minutes = +19.1NP/40 for season
Woody Newton 0NP in 3 minutes = +38NP in 76 minutes = +20.0NP/40 for season

DNP coach’s decision
Chaz Owens
John Bol Ajak 0NP in 0 minutes = -1NP in 29 minutes = -1.4NP/40 for season
Jesse Edwards 0NP in 0 minutes = +1NP in 12 minutes = +3.3NP/40 for season
Frank Anselem 0NP in 0 minutes = +5NP in 26 minutes = +7.7NP/40 for season

Alan Griffin 15 points and 4 assists = 19

Shooting Efficiency

Robert Braswell 12 points – 3mfg – 0mft = +9

Scoring Efficiency
(Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points)
Marek Dolezaj 9 points of 13 = 69.2%

My Man
(Who played the most minutes?)
Marek Dolezaj 40 minutes

TEAM STATS

Possession

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 9 of our 38 misses = 23.7%
They rebounded 20 of their 44 misses = 45.5%

Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)
We got 3 points on 9 O-Rebs = 0.333 points/O-Reb
They got 21 points on 20 O-Rebs = 1.051 points/O-Reb

Unforced Turnovers
(Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers)
We had 13 turnovers – 3 steals = 10 unforced
They had 16 turnovers – 12 steals = 4 unforced

Points per Takeover
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)
We had 13 points from 16 takeovers = 0.8125 points/takeaway
They had 10 points from 13 takeovers = 0.769 points/takeaway

Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeover: [Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 16 points in 25 unsettled situations = 0.640 points
They had 31 points in 33 unsettled situations = 0.939 points

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 33 + 16 = 49
They had 49 + 13 = 62

Hustle Stats
One of the radio sponsors gives an award to the team that had the most “hustle stats”, which they define as rebounds + blocks + steals. I decided to keep track of that, too:
We had 33 + 5 + 12 = 50
They had 49 + 0 + 3 = 52

Scoring

Shooting
(Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 10 for 22 on twos, (45.4%), 12 for 38 on threes (31.6%) and 4 for 5 on frees (80.0%)
They were 16 for 37 on twos, (43.2%), 7 for 28 on threes (25.0%) and 10 for 16 on frees (62.5%)
Combined percentages were: 454 + 316 + 800 = 1,570 vs. 432 + 250 + 625 = 1,307 = -263

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum”
POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made
OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots)
TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint)
FBP = fast break points
POTO= points off turnovers

We had 12 PIP, 44 POP, 36 OL, 8 TZ, 13 POTO, 9 FBP
They had 28 PIP, 25 POP, 21 OL, 4 TZ, 10 POTO, 13 FBP

Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 9 FBP in 41 opportunities (22.0%)
They scored 13 FBP in 32 opportunities (40.6%)

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 44 FCP and 3 SCP
They had 19 FCP and 21 SCP

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 43 points and our bench scored 17 points.
Their starters scored 45 points and their bench scored 18 points.

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 18 of our 22 field goals = 81.8%
They assisted 13 of their 23 field goals = 56.5%

Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 60 points in 67 possessions = 0.896 points/ possession
They scored 63 points in 68 possessions = 0.926 points/possession
It was a 135 possession game.

If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession:
We scored 60 points in 62 possessions = 0.968 points/ possession
They scored 63 points in 73 possessions = 0.863 points/possession

Team Shooting Efficiency

(Points minus missed field goals and free throws)

We scored 60 points, missed 38 field goals and missed 1 free throws = net +21
They scored 63 points, missed 42 field goals and missed 6 free throws = net +15
(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)

We scored 60 on 22 two point attempts, 38 three point attempts and 5 free throw attempts = 60 of a possible 163 points = 36.8% of possible points scored.
They scored 63 on 37 two point attempts, 28 three point attempts and 16 free throw attempts = 63 of a possible 174 points = 36.2% of possible points scored.

Fouls

(Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.)
We attempted 22 two point shots and were fouled 12 times = 1.83
They attempted 37 two point shots and were fouled 18 times = 2.06
At this rate, if we’d taken 37 two point shots, we’ve have been fouled 20 times.

Comments

- It wasn’t just that we got out-rebounded 33-49. It wasn’t just that we got out offensive rebounded 9-20. It was that we scored only 3 points off of our 9 offensive rebounds while they scored 21 points off of their 20 offensive rebounds.

- It’s amazing that we had 5 blocks and 12 steals to 0 and 3 for Pitt and yet we lost. 10 unforced turnovers by us did much to negate our good plays.

- We tried 56 two point shots, 19 three pointers and 42 free throws against Buffalo. Against Pittsburgh we took 22 two point shots, 38 threes and 5 free throws.

- We had higher shooting percentages inside and outside the arc and from the line but lost.

- This game was an example of how over-rated assist percentage is. We assisted in 18 of our 22 shots. Pitt was 13/23. Assists tend to come from jump shots because the shooter doesn’t take a step before shooting. They tend to mean that you are relying too much on jump shots.
