SCP is second chance points.) We had 44 FCP and 3 SCP They had 19 FCP and 21 SCP Starters/Bench (Total points – bench points = starters points) Our starters scored 43 points and our bench scored 17 points. Their starters scored 45 points and their bench scored 18 points. Assists (The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted) We assisted 18 of our 22 field goals = 81.8% They assisted 13 of their 23 field goals = 56.5% Team Offensive Possession Efficiency (Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions) We scored 60 points in 67 possessions = 0.896 points/ possession They scored 63 points in 68 possessions = 0.926 points/possession It was a 135 possession game. If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession: We scored 60 points in 62 possessions = 0.968 points/ possession They scored 63 points in 73 possessions = 0.863 points/possession Team Shooting Efficiency (Points minus missed field goals and free throws) We scored 60 points, missed 38 field goals and missed 1 free throws = net +21 They scored 63 points, missed 42 field goals and missed 6 free throws = net +15 (Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot) We scored 60 on 22 two point attempts, 38 three point attempts and 5 free throw attempts = 60 of a possible 163 points = 36.8% of possible points scored. They scored 63 on 37 two point attempts, 28 three point attempts and 16 free throw attempts = 63 of a possible 174 points = 36.2% of possible points scored. Fouls (Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.) We attempted 22 two point shots and were fouled 12 times = 1.83 They attempted 37 two point shots and were fouled 18 times = 2.06 At this rate, if we’d taken 37 two point shots, we’ve have been fouled 20 times. Comments - It wasn’t just that we got out-rebounded 33-49. It wasn’t just that we got out offensive rebounded 9-20. It was that we scored only 3 points off of our 9 offensive rebounds while they scored 21 points off of their 20 offensive rebounds. - It’s amazing that we had 5 blocks and 12 steals to 0 and 3 for Pitt and yet we lost. 10 unforced turnovers by us did much to negate our good plays. - We tried 56 two point shots, 19 three pointers and 42 free throws against Buffalo. Against Pittsburgh we took 22 two point shots, 38 threes and 5 free throws. - We had higher shooting percentages inside and outside the arc and from the line but lost. - This game was an example of how over-rated assist percentage is. We assisted in 18 of our 22 shots. Pitt was 13/23. Assists tend to come from jump shots because the shooter doesn’t take a step before shooting.
