SCORING TWO POINT FIELD GOALS Pre-conference: In Wins: 224/445 = 50.3% vs. 142/333 = 42.6% In Losses: 27/70 = 38.6% vs. 27/61 = 44.3% Total: 251/515 = 48.7% vs. 169/394 = 42.8% Conference: In Wins: 139/284 = 48.9% vs. 92/211 = 43.6% In Losses: 137/331 = 41.4% vs. 163/348 = 46.8% Total: 276/615 = 44.9% vs. 255/559 = 45.6% Post-Season: In Wins: 64/131 = .489 vs. 52/115 = .452 In Losses: 33/78 = .423 vs. 36/68 = .529 Total: 97/209 = .464 vs. 88/183 = .481 Season: In Wins: 427/860 = 49.7% vs. 286/659 = 43.4% In Losses: 197/479 = 41.1% vs. 226/477 = 47.4% Total: 624/1339 = 46.6% vs. 512/1136 = 45.1% We led in this stat 22 times and are 18-4 in those games. We were 5-10 when we lost this stat. This has always bene a very strong predictor of victory. Some years back I studies several stats from 20 years of SU teams and determined that if I ranked those teams in two point FG percentage, that most closely approximated their ranking in winning percentage. THREE POINT FIELD GOALS Pre-conference: In Wins: 62/192 = 32.3% vs. 87/270 = 32.2% In Losses: 9/46 = 19.6% vs. 18/49 = 36.7% Total: 71/238 = 29.8% vs. 105/319 = 32.9% Conference: In Wins: 43/124 = 34.7% vs. 65/201 = 32.3% In Losses: 67/199= 33.7% vs. 80/230 = 34.8% Total: 110/323 = 34.1% vs. 145/431 = 33.6% Post-Season: In Wins: 15/59 = 25.4% vs. 28/115 = 24.4% In Losses: 12/36 = 33.3% vs. 11/45 = 24.4% Total: 27/95 = 28.4% vs. 39/160 = 24.4% Season: In Wins: 120/375 = 32.0% vs. 180/586 = 30.7% In Losses: 88/281 = 31.3% vs. 109/324 = 33.6% Total: 208/656 = 31.7% vs. 289/910 = 31.8% We led in this stat 17 times with 2 even. We were 13-4 when we win it, 1-1 when we break even and 9-9 when we lose it. We weren’t a big three point shooting team and defended it well overall so there wasn’t a big difference between our performance in wins and losses. FREE THROWS Pre-conference: In Wins: 185/266 = 69.5% vs. 134/187 = 71.6% In Losses: 36/54 = 66.7% vs. 28/36 = 77.8% Total: 221/320 = 69.1% vs. 162/223 = 72.6% Conference: In Wins: 134/177 = 75.7% vs. 90/123 = 73.2% In Losses: 145/182 = 79.7% vs. 138/184 = 75.0% Total: 279/359 = 77.7% vs. 228/307 = 74.3% Post-Season: In Wins: 72/98 = 73.5% vs. 37/56 = 66.1% In Losses: 22/31 = 71.0% vs. 42/56 = 75.0% Total: 94/129 = 72.9% vs. 79/112 = 70.5% Season: In Wins: 391/541 = 72.0% vs. 261/366 = 72.3% In Losses: 203/267 = 76.7% vs. 208/276 = 75.5% Total: 594/808 = 73.6% vs. 469/642 = 73.6% We led in this stat 17 times with 2 even. We were 12-5 when we win it, 1-1 when we broke even and 10-8 when we lose it. We were a good free throw shooting team. It’s interesting that we improved considerably in the conference season over the pre-conference season. POINTS IN THE PAINT Pre-conference: In Wins: 350 vs. 248 In Losses: 52 vs. 46 Total: 402 vs. 294 Conference: In Wins: 218 vs. 150 In Losses: 202 vs. 282 Total: 420 vs. 432 Post-Season: In Wins: 84 vs. 92 In Losses: 52 vs. 68 Total: 136 vs. 160 Season: In Wins: 652 vs. 490 In Losses: 306 vs. 396 Total: 958 vs. 886 We led in this stat 18 times and been even 3 times. We were 16-2 when we won it, 1-2 when we broke even and 6-10 when we lost it. Another stat that has a lot to do with whether we win or lose. POINTS OUTSIDE THE PAINT (POP: total points minus points in the paint and free throws made) Pre-conference: In Wins: 292 vs. 298 In Losses: 33 vs. 62 Total: 325 vs. 360 Conference: In Wins: 189 vs. 234 In Losses: 273 vs. 284 Total: 462 vs. 518 Post-Season: In Wins: 89 vs. 96 In Losses: 50 vs. 39 Total: 139 vs. 135 Season: In Wins: 570 vs. 628 In Losses: 356 vs. 385 Total: 926 vs. 1013 We led in this stat 15 times and are 10-5 in those games. We were 13-9 when we lost it. This was just not a strength for us and we didn’t beat teams when we shot well from outside because we didn’t do it as much as they did. POINTS FROM THREE POINT RANGE Pre-conference: In Wins: 186 vs. 261 In Losses: 27 vs. 54 Total: 213 vs. 315 Conference: In Wins: 129 vs. 195 In Losses: 201 vs. 240 Total: 330 vs. 435 Post-Season: In Wins: 45 vs. 84 In Losses: 36 vs. 33 Total: 81 vs. 117 Season: In Wins: 360 vs. 540 In Losses: 264 vs. 327 Total: 624 vs. 867 We led in this stat 8 times with 4 even. We are 5-3 when we win it, 1-2 when we break even and 17-9 when we lose it. See above. TWILIGHT ZONE (POP minus points from treys) Pre-conference: In Wins: 98 vs. 44 In Losses: 6 vs. 8 Total: 104 vs. 52 Conference: In Wins: 60 vs. 34 In Losses: 72 vs. 44 Total: 132 vs. 78 Post-Season: In Wins: 44 vs. 12 In Losses: 14 vs. 4 Total: 58 vs. 16 Season: In Wins: 202 vs. 90 In Losses: 92 vs. 56 Total: 294 vs. 146 We have led in this stat 25 times, with 3 even. We were 17-8 when we win it, 0-3 when we broke even and 6-3 when we lost it. We had twice as many TZ points as the opposition but both teams shot so rarely from there that it didn’t make that much difference. POINTS OFF TURNOVERS Pre-conference: In Wins: 184 vs. 136 In Losses: 27 vs. 33 Total: 211 vs. 169 Conference: In Wins: 103 vs. 68 In Losses: 115 vs. 142 Total: 218 vs. 210 Post-Season: In Wins: 51 vs. 33 In Losses: 10 vs. 31 Total: 61 vs. 64 Season: In Wins: 338 vs. 237 In Losses: 152 vs. 206 Total: 490 vs. 443 We have led in this stat 20 times with 2 even. We are 17-3 when we win it, 2-0 when we break even and 4-11 when we lose it. Still another stat that makes a pretty significant difference. I think being aggressive when you get a turnover is the key- don’t let them get set up. FAST BREAK POINTS Pre-conference: In Wins: 66 vs. 76 In Losses: 6 vs. 12 Total: 72 vs. 88 Conference: In Wins: 32 vs. 38 In Losses: 46 vs. 82 Total: 78 vs. 120 Post-Season: In Wins: 16 vs. 16 In Losses: 2 vs. 16 Total: 18 vs. 32 Season: In Wins: 114 vs. 130 In Losses: 54 vs. 110 Total: 168 vs. 240 We led in this stat 9 times and have been even 4 times. We were 8-1 when we won it, 4-0 when we broke even and 11-13 when we lost it. Beating the other team down court matters. FAST BREAK PERCENTAGE (Fast break points divided by defensive rebounds+blocks+steals) Pre-conference: In Wins: 66/473= 14.0% vs. 76/346 = 22.0% In Losses: 6/81 = 7.4% vs. 12/76 = 15.8% Total: 72/554= 13.0% vs. 88/422 = 20.9% Conference: In Wins: 32/298 = 10.7% vs. 38/252 = 15.1% In Losses: 46/344 = 13.4% vs. 82/352 = 23.3% Total: 78/642 = 12.1% vs. 120/604 = 19.9% Post-Season: In Wins: 16/145 = 11.0% vs. 16/121 = 13.2% In Losses: 2/58 = 3.4% vs. 16/66 = 24.2% Total: 18/203 = 8.9% vs. 32/187 = 17.1% Season: In Wins: 114/916= 12.4% vs. 130/719 = 18.1% In Losses: 54/483 = 11.1% vs. 110/494 = 22.3% Total: 168/1399 = 12.0% vs. 240/1213 = 19.8% We led in this stat 9 times with 1 even. We were 8-1 when we won it, 0-1 when we broke even and 15-12 when we lost it. See above. The last Syracuse team that fast broke, (is that a word?) like the old days was the 2011-12. I hoped to see a return to that next year. Did we need Bazley for that? I think it has more to do with the point guard. The plodding frank Howard might not be the answer. But maybe with more depth we’ll see a different frank Howard and a different team. FIRST CHANCE POINTS (total points minus second chance points, fast break points and made free throws) Pre-conference: In Wins: 411 vs. 378 In Losses: 55 vs. 84 Total: 466 vs. 462 Conference: In Wins: 292 vs. 281 In Losses: 331 vs. 360 Total: 623 vs. 641 Post-Season: In Wins: 121 vs. 120 In Losses: 70 vs. 52 Total: 191 vs. 172 Season: In Wins: 824 vs. 779 In Losses: 456 vs. 496 Total: 1280 vs. 1275 We led in this stat 21 times and been even once. We are 13-8 when we won it, 1-0 when we broke even and 9-6 when we lost it. This sounds like a significant stat in theory but it wasn’t in practice. SECOND CHANCE POINTS Pre-Conference: In Wins: 151 vs. 98 In Losses: 20 vs. 12 Total: 171 vs. 110 Conference: In Wins: 83 vs. 60 In Losses: 99 vs. 131 Total: 182 vs. 191 Post-Season: In Wins: 36 vs. 52 In Losses: 30 vs. 37 Total: 66 vs. 89 Season: In Wins: 270 vs. 210 In Losses: 149 vs. 180 Total: 419 vs. 390 We have led in this stat 18 times and been even 1. We were 14-4 when we won this stat, 1-0 when we lost it and 8-10 when we lost it. Again, opportunism when things are disorganized is a winning characteristic. LAST POSSESSIONS (Points scored in the last possession of a half or overtime period) Pre-conference: In Wins: 21 vs. 17 In Losses: 3 vs. 4 Total: 24 vs. 21 Conference: In Wins: 17 vs. 22 In Losses: 18 vs. 31 Total: 35 vs. 53 Post-Season: In Wins: 7 vs. 9 In Losses: 4 vs. 2 Total: 11 vs. 11 Season: In Wins: 45 vs. 48 In Losses: 25 vs. 37 Total: 70 vs. 85 We have led in this stat 10 times and been even 4 times. We were 8-2 when we won it, 2-2 when we broke even, (in each case, neither team scored a point in their last possessions), and 13-10 when we lost it. I started keeping track of this because we had several painful experiences at the end of the first half. But it really didn’t seem to make a big difference. STARTER POINTS Pre-conference: In Wins: 687 vs. 524 In Losses: 105 vs. 122 Total: 792 vs. 646 Conference: In Wins: 493 vs. 369 In Losses: 585 vs. 441 Total: 1078 vs. 810 Post-Season: In Wins: 237 vs. 173 In Losses: 120 vs. 134 Total: 357 vs. 307 Season: In Wins: 1417 vs. 1066 In Losses: 810 vs. 697 Total: 2227 vs. 1763 We have led in this stat 29 times with one even. We were 19-10 when we won this stat, 0-1 when we broke even and 3-4 when we lost it. This team had so little depth our starters have to win this stat. Of the three times they lost it and we won, two were early season games against over-matched opponents, (Iona and Texas Southern) and the other was against Pittsburgh, the worst team in the conference BENCH POINTS Pre-conference: In Wins: 132 vs. 155 In Losses: 12 vs. 14 Total: 144 vs. 169 Conference: In Wins: 48 vs. 100 In Losses: 35 vs. 217 Total: 83 vs. 317 Post-Season: In Wins: 8 vs. 32 In Losses: 4 vs. 13 Total: 12 vs. 45 Season: In Wins: 188 vs. 287 In Losses: 51 vs. 244 Total: 239 vs. 531 We have led in this stat 7 times and were 5-2 when we did. We were 18-12 when we lost it. We ahd no shot at this stat. ASSISTS Pre-conference: In Wins: 146/286 = 51.0% vs. 172/229 = 75.1% In Losses: 18/36 = 50.0% vs. 35/45 = 77.8% Total: 164/322 = 50.9% vs. 207/274 = 75.5% Conference: In Wins: 87/182 = 47.8% vs. 112/157 = 71.3% In Losses: 92/204 = 45.1% vs. 180/243 = 74.1% Total: 179/386 = 46.4% vs. 292/400 = 73.0% Post-Season: In Wins: 34/79 = 43.0% vs. 60/80 = 75.0% In Losses: 18/45 = 40.0% vs. 33/47 = 74.4% Total: 52/124 = 41.9% vs. 93/127 = 73.2% Season: In Wins: 267/547 = 48.8% vs. 344/466 = 73.8% In Losses: 128/285 = 44.9% vs. 248/335 = 74.0% Total: 395/832 = 47.5% vs. 592/801 = 73.9% We led in this stat 3 times and were 2-1 when we won it. We were 21-13 when we lost it. We had no shot at this one, either. We were all about drives to the basket and didn’t look to dish it. POSSESSIONS Pre-conference: In Wins: 740 vs. 738 = 1478 possessions /11 = 134.4 per game In Losses: 141 vs. 142 = 283 /2 = 141.5 per game Total: 881 vs. 880 = 1761/13 = 135.5 per game Conference: In Wins: 495 vs. 501 = 996/8 = 124.5 per game In Losses: 628 vs. 630 = 1258/10 = 125.8 per game Total: 1123 vs. 1131 = 2254/18 = 125.2 per game Post Season: In Wins: 248 vs. 249 = 497/4 = 124.25 per game In Losses: 130 vs. 126 = 256/2 = 128.0 per game Total: 378 vs. 375 = 753/6 = 125.5 per game Season: In Wins: 1483 vs. 1488 = 2971/23 = 129.1 per game In Losses: 899 vs. 898 = 1797/14 = 128.4 per game Total: 2382 vs. 2386 = 4768/37 = 128.9 per game Possessions are always no more than one off so I didn’t keep track of who ‘won’ this stat. The interesting thing is the average possessions per game: The early games were played at a much faster pace than the ACC games or the NCAA tournament. A slower pace seemed to help us early and late but there was little difference in the conference. OFFENSIVE EFFICIENCY (total points divided by possessions) Pre-conference: In Wins: 821/740 = 1.109 vs. 679/738 = 0.920 In Losses: 117/141 = 0.818 vs. 136/142 = 0.944 Total: 938/881 = 1.062 vs. 815/880 = 0.924 Conference: In Wins: 541/492= 1.100 vs. 469/501 = 0.936 In Losses: 620/648 = 0.957 vs. 704/650 = 1.083 Total: 1161/1140 = 1.018 vs. 1173/1151 = 1.019 Post-Season: In Wins: 245/248 = 0.988 vs. 225/249 = 0.904 In Losses: 124/130 = 0.954 vs. 147/126 = 1.167 Total: 369/378 = 0.976 vs. 372/375 = 0.992 Season: In Wins: 1607/1480 = 1.086 vs. 1373/1488 = 0.923 In Losses: 861/919 = 0.937 vs. 987/918 = 1.075 Total: 2468/2399 = 1.029 vs. 2360/2406 = 0.981 We have won this stat 23 times and lost it 14 times. (The winning team virtually always wins it) We were virtually as efficient in conference games as our opposition, even if it didn’t seem like it. TEAM SCORING EFFICIENCY (points actually scored vs. points that would have been scored is every shot had fallen) Pre-conference: In Wins: 819/1682 = 48.7% vs. 679/1661 = 40.9% In Losses: 117/332 =35.2% vs. 136/329 = 41.3% Total: 936/2014 = 46.5% vs. 815/1990 = 41.0% Conference: In Wins: 541/1117 = 48.4% vs. 469/1146 = 40.9% In Losses: 620/1442 = 43.0% vs. 704/1570 = 44.8% Total: 1161/2559 = 45.4% vs. 1173/2716 = 43.2% Post Season: In Wins: 245/537 = 45.6% vs. 225/631 = 35.7% In Losses: 124/295 = 42.0% vs. 147/327 = 45.0% Total: 369/832 = 44.4% vs. 372/958 = 38.8% Season totals: In Wins: 1850/3873 = 47.8% vs. 1598/4069 = 39.3% In Losses: 920/2232= 41.2% vs. 1065/ 2387 = 44.6% Total: 2770/6105 = 45.4% vs. 2663/6456 = 41.2% We’ve led in this stat 24 times and are 19-5 in those games. We are 3-9 when we lose this stat. We won when we shot the ball better than normal and played exceptional defense. We needed both. QUARTERLY BREAKS Pre-conference: In Wins: 183-140, 190-166, 201-170, 231-193 OT: 17-10 In Losses: 26-31, 28-44, 31-30, 28-24 OT: 4-7 Totals: 209-171, 218-210, 232-200, 259-217 OT: 21-17 Average: 16-13, 17-16, 18-15, 20-17 OT: 10.5-8.5 Conference: In Wins: 121-96, 124-106, 136-121, 160-146 In Losses: 110-139, 156-167, 142-146, 198-225 1st OT: 8-8, 2nd OT: 8-19 Totals: 231-235, 280-273, 278-267, 358-371 1st OT: 8-8, 2nd OT: 8-19 Average: 13-13, 16-15, 15-15, 20-21 1st OT: 8-8, 2nd OT: 8-19 Post-Season: In Wins: 60-41, 50-65, 58-49, 77-70 In Losses: 36-36, 20-37, 28-34, 40-40 Total: 96-77, 70-102, 86-83, 117-110 Average: 16-13, 12-17, 14-14, 19.5-18 Season: In Wins: 364-277, 364-337, 395-340, 461-409 OT: 17-10 In Losses: 172-206, 204-248, 201-210, 266-289 1st OT: 12-15 2nd OT: 8-19 Totals: 536-483, 568-585, 596-550, 734-698 OT: 33-32 2nd OT: 8-19 Average: 14-13, 15-16, 16-15, 20-19 1st OT: 11-11 2nd OT: 8-19 In regulation, we’ve won 79 quarters, lost 57 and tied 9. We’ve scored at least 15 points 93 times and held the opposition under that 69 times in 148 quarters. There wasn’t much difference in our play from quarter to quarter although we did get off to good starts in the NCAA games. It’s important to establish that you are going to be tough to beat early when playing teams you haven’t played before.
