I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of the non-conference season, the ACC season and the post season. Net Points (points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls) Joe Girard +26NP in 31 minutes = +35/72 = +19.4NP/40 for season Marek Dolezaj +20NP in 37 minutes = +38/101 = +15.0NP/40 for season Elijah Hughes +15NP in 40 minutes = +39/116 = +13.4NP/40 for season Quincy Guerrier +13NP in 17 minutes = +12/43 = +11.2NP/40 for season Bourama Sidibie +9NP in 20 minutes = +28/69 = +16.2NP/40 for season Buddy Boeheim +9NP in 34 minutes = +30/98 = +12.2NP/40 for season Jesse Edwards 0NP in 6 minutes = +7/23 = +12.2NP/40 for season Brycen Goodine -1NP in 13 minutes = +5/37 = +5.4NP/40 for season DNP coach’s decision Jalen Carey 0NP in 0 minutes = -3/23 = -5.2NP/40 for season Robert Braswell 0NP in 0 minutes = -2/8 = -10NP/40 for season Howard Washington 0NP in 0 minutes = +5/7 = +28.6NP/40 for season Injured None Suspended None Redshirting John Bol Ajak Out for the year None Left Team None Awards Offensive Dude of the Game, (O-Dog) (Points plus assists) Joe Girard 24 points + 2 assists = 26 Shooting Efficiency (Points minus missed field goal and free throw attempts) Joe Girard 24 points – 1 mfg – 0 mft = +23 Scoring Efficiency (Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points) Joe Girard 24 points of 27 = 88.9% Sat Us Down (Who scored the first SU basket of each half?) 1st Half- Bourama Sidibe lay-up at 18:42 2nd Half- Elijah Hughes lay-up at 18:41 TACO Bell MVP (Who scored the point that got us to 70, which gets you free tacos with your ticket stub) Joe Girard trey at 8:20 My Man (Who played the most minutes?) Elijah Hughes 40 minutes TEAM STATS Possession Rebounding (Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that) We rebounded 5 of our 26 misses = 19.2% They rebounded 9 of their 40 misses = 22.5% Effective Offensive Rebounding (Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds) We got 3 points on 5 O-Rebs = 0.600 points/O-reb They got 9 points on 9 O-Rebs = 1.000 points/O-reb Unforced Turnovers (Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers) We had 14 turnovers – 8 steals = 6 unforced They had 13 turnovers – 8 steals = 5 unforced Points per Takeaway (Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had) We had 12 points from 13 takeaways = 0.923 points/takeaway They had 14 points from 14 takeaways = 1.000 points/takeaway Unsettled Situations (Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeaway: [Second Chance Point + Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers) We had 15 points in 18 unsettled situations = 0.833 points They had 23 points in 23 unsettled situations = 1.000 points Manufactured Possessions (One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers) We had 36 + 13 = 49 They had 30 + 14 = 44 Hustle Stats One of the radio sponsors gives an award to the team that had the most “hustle stats”, which they define as rebounds + steals + blocks. I decided to keep track of that, too: We had 36 + 4 + 8 = 48 They had 30 + 0 + 8 = 38 Scoring Shooting (Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws) We were 19 for 24 on twos, (79.2%), 9 for 23 on threes (39.1%) and 24 for 36 on frees (66.7%) They were 15 for 37 on twos, (40.5%), 8 for 25 on threes (32.0%) and 13 for 14 on frees (92.9%) Combined percentages were: 1850 (792 + 391 + 667) vs. 1654 (405 + 320 + 929) = +196 Points (PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum” POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots) TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint) FBP = fast break points POTO= points off turnovers We had 34 PIP, 31 POP, 27 OL, 4 TZ, 12 POTO, 14 FBP They had 26 PIP, 28 POP, 24 OL, 4 TZ, 14 POTO, 6 FBP Fast Break Percentage (FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals) We scored 14 FBP in 43 opportunities (35.6%) They scored 6 FBP in 29 opportunities (20.7%) First Chance/Second Chance (FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.) We had 36 FCP and 3 SCP They had 39 FCP and 9 SCP Starters/Bench (Total points – bench points = starters points) Our starters scored 75 points and our bench scored 14 points Their starters scored 53 points and their bench scored 14 points Assists (The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted) We assisted 18 of our 28 field goals = 64.3% They assisted 14 of their 23 field goals = 60.9% Team Offensive Possession Efficiency (Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions) We scored 89 points in 73 possessions = 1.219 points/ possession They scored 67 points in 73 possessions = 0.918 points/possession It was a 146 possession game. If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession: We scored 89 points in 64 possessions = 1.391 points/ possession They scored 67 points in 69 possessions = 0.971 points/possession Team Shooting Efficiency (Points minus missed field goals and free throws) We scored 89 points, missed 19 field goals and 12 missed free throws = net +58 They scored 67 points, missed 39 field goals and 1 missed free throws = net +27 (Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot) We scored 89 on 24 two point attempts, 23 three point attempts and 36 free throw attempts = 89 of a possible 153 points = 58.2% of possible points scored. They scored 67 on 37 two point attempts, 25 three point attempts and 14 free throw attempts = 67 of a possible 163 points = 41.1% of possible points scored. Breakdown by Quarters (Points scored between the beginning of the game and the 10 minute mark of the first half, then halftime, then the 10 minute mark of the second half, the end of regulation and then overtime of there was one) 28-17, 16-9, 19-28, 26-13 Fouls (Two point shots and free throws attempted per times fouled.) We attempted 24 two point shots, attempted 36 free throws and were fouled 26 times = 0.92; 1.38 They attempted 37 two point shots, attempted 14 free throws and were fouled 16 times = 2.31; 0.875 We were more likely to get calls when attempting two point shots and got more shots per foul. Neither was close. Comments - I’ve always had a rule of thumb that a player who averages 10.0NP per 40 minutes is a starter-level player. Even with the nadir of the Virginia game, we now have 7 such players. We’ll see how that holds up as we move on. - “Mighty” Joe Girard missed a trey with 9:17 to go in the game. Had it gone in, he’d have had a ‘perfect’ game: 2 for 2 inside the arc, 6 for 6 outside of it and 5 for 5 from the line. - It was not a game for offensive rebounding: the two teams grabbed only 14 of their 66 misses. Maybe Q-G would be persuaded to do something about that for us? We got only three second chance points: Seattle got 9. - We are a good ball-hawking team but Seattle matched us with 8 steals and one more takeaway, (14 vs. 13). That means we were too loose with the ball, which could be fatal against an ACC defense. Overall, Seattle had 23 points in unsettled situations, (offensive rebounds and turnovers) to our 15. - We won the game by hitting 79% of our two point shots and getting to the line 36 times. - We actually got out-scored in our initial sets, (First Chance Points), 36-39. - Seattle attempted 37 two point shots to our 24 yet we went to the line 36 times to their 14. We can ignore that but I’ll bet Seattle isn’t.
