I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of each month. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.) This is limited to recruited scholarship players only.

Net Points
(points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls)

Average net points/40 by position, (based on averaging 20+ minutes per game), since the 1980-81 season:
Centers 18.6; Power Forwards: 18.4; Small Forwards: 16.1, Shooting Guards: 13.3; Point Guards: 13.5

Jesse Edwards +21NP in 26 minutes = +104NP in 143 minutes = +29.1NP/40 for season
Benny Williams +17NP in 45 minutes = +36NP in 171 minutes = +8.4NP/40 for season
Mounir Hima +11NP in 19 minutes = +23NP in 57 minutes = +16.1NP/40 for season
Judah Mintz +6NP in 41 minutes = +68NP in 168 minutes = +16.2NP/40 for season
Chris Bell +2NP in 35 minutes = +14NP in 105 minutes = +5.3NP/40 for season
Symir Torrence 0NP in 13 minutes = +22NP in 90 minutes = +9.8NP/40 for season
Joe Girard -1NP in 38 minutes = +51NP in 165 minutes = +12.4NP/40 for season
Quadir Copeland 0NP in 8 minutes = +7NP in 44 minutes = +6.4NP/40 for season

DNP coach’s decision
John Bol Ajak 0NP in 0 minutes = +2NP in 4 minutes = +20.0NP/40 for season
Maliq Brown 0NP in 0 minutes = +20NP in 42 minutes = +19.0NP/40 for season
Peter Carey 0NP in 0 minutes = -1NP in 11 minutes = -3.6NP/40 for season
Justin Taylor 0NP in 0 minutes = +10NP in 52 minutes = +7.7NP/40 for season

Awards

Offensive Dude of the Game, (O-Dog)
(Points plus assists)
Judah Mintz 20 points and 2 assists = 22

Shooting Efficiency
(Points minus missed field goal and free throw attempts)
Jesse Edwards 18 points – 2mfg – 0mft = +16

Scoring Efficiency
(Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points)
Jesse Edwards 18 points of 22= 81.8%

My Man
(Who played the most minutes?)
Benny Williams 45 minutes

TEAM STATS

Possession

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 12 of our 42 misses = 28.6%
They rebounded 17 of their 43 misses = 39.5%

Unsettled Situations
[Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 20 points in 28 unsettled situations = 0.714 points/situation
They had 22 points in 30 unsettled situations = 0.733 points/situation

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 38 + 16 = 54
They had 47 + 14 = 61

Scoring

Shooting
(Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 23 for 51 on twos, (45.1%), 3 for 16 on threes (18.8%) and 14 for 18 on frees (77.8%)
They were 20 for 44 on twos, (45.5%), 7 for 23 on threes (30.4%) and 15 for 21 on frees (71.4%)

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum”
POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made
OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots)
TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint)
FT = Free Throws

We had 32 PIP, 23 POP, 9 OL, 14 TZ, 14 FT
They had 34 PIP, 27 POP, 21 OL, 6 TZ, 17 FT

Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 6 FBP in 40 opportunities (15.0%)
They scored 2 FBP in 40 opportunities (5.0%)

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 41 FCP and 6 SCP
They had 44 FCP and 2 SCP

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 65 points and our bench scored 4 points.
Their starters scored 72 points and their bench scored 4 points.

Efficiency

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 13 of our 26 field goals = 50.0%
They assisted 18 of their 27 field goals = 66.7%

Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 69 points in 77 possessions = 0.896 points/ possession
They scored 76 points in 76 possessions = 1.000 points/possession
It was a 153-possession game.

If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession:
We scored 69 points in 76 possessions = 0.908 points/ possession
They scored 76 points in 77 possessions = 0.987 points/possession

Team Shooting Efficiency

(Points minus missed field goals and free throws)

We scored 69 points, missed 41 field goals and missed 4 free throws = net +24
They scored 76 points, missed 40 field goals and missed 6 free throws = net +30

(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)

We scored 69 on 51 two-point attempts, 16 three-point attempts and 18 free throw attempts = 69 of a possible 168 points = 41.1% of possible points scored.
They scored 76 on 44 two-point attempts, 23 three-point attempts and 21 free throw attempts = 76 of a possible 178 points = 42.7% of possible points scored.

Fouls

(Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.)
We attempted 51 two-point shots and were fouled 16 times = 3.19
They attempted 44 two-point shots and were fouled 15 times = 2.93

Comments:

- Did Judah Mintz really have a great game – or even a good one? He scored 20 points, many of them on spectacular first-half shots. But he had just 2 assists and 6 turnovers and missed 10 field goals and 3 free throws. The net result was 6NP.

- 1st half rebounds and turnovers: 23-22 and 3-9. Second half & OT: 15-25 and 11-7. Scoring went from 35-29 to 34-47.

- This was the first game in which our starters got outscored, (65-72). We don’t win those games.

- That was the best defensive game of the year for both teams. It was our worst game in terms of efficiency (.896/.908) and our second-best defensive performance (1.000/.987) after Northeastern, a team nowhere near as good as St. John’s. Same with shooting efficiency, (+24/+30). It was our lowest percentage of possible points (41.1%) and third lowest on defense, (42.&%), just behind Richmond and behind Northeastern. 74-71 and 69-76 are not typical overtime game scores.
