I’ve added so many things to my post-game “Net Points” posts over the years that it’s become a very long post to read and a longer one to do. I’ve decided to have separate posts for the numbers for a particular game and for the cumulative season totals. It’s the later that takes most of the time and lengthens the post so much. There was too much verbiage and too many numbers.

I’m still going to figure the season totals but I’ll post them at three different stages of the season: after the pre-conference schedule, after the conference schedule and after the post season. In the meantime, I’ll go with this stream-lined version of “Net Points, etc.” after each game, with numbers and commentary only for that game. That should make it both quicker to do and more digestible.

Team Stats:
(I’ve decide to put the team that won the stat in bold and ties in italics.)

POSSESSION

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)

We rebounded 16 of our 39 misses = 39.0%
They rebounded 6 of their 40 misses = 15.0%

Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)

We got 22 points on 16 O-Rebs = 1.375 points/O-reb
They got 7 points on 6 O-Rebs = 1.167 points/ O-reb

Unforced Turnovers
(Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers)

We had 9 turnovers – 5 steals = 4 unforced
They had 8 turnovers – 6 steals = 2 unforced

Points per Takeaway
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)

We had 7 points from 8 takeaways = 0.875 points/takeaway
They had 13 points from 9 takeaways = 1.444 points/takeaway

Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeaway: [Second Chance Point + Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)

We had 29 points in 24 unsettled situations = 1.208 points
They had 20 points in 15 unsettled situations = 1.333 points

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)

We had 50 + 8 = 58
They had 31 + 9 = 40

Scoring

Shooting
(shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)

We were 23 for 45 on twos, (51.1%), 4 for 18 on threes (22.2%) and 14 for 20 on frees (70.0%)
They were 6 for 29 on twos, (20.7%), 12 for 25 on threes (48.0%) and 16 for 22 on frees (72.7%)

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP –free throws made, TREY: points from three point shots, TZ= Twilight Zone, which is POP – TREY, two point jumpers from outside the paint, FBP = fast break points POTO= points off turnovers)

We had 26 PIP, 32 POP, 12 TREY, 20 TZ, 6 FBP, 7 POTO
They had 10 PIP, 38 POP, 36 TREY, 4 TZ, 0 FBP, 13 POTO

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)

We had 30 FCP and 22 SCP
They had 41 FCP and 7 SCP

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)

Our starters scored 63 points and our bench scored 9 points
Their starters scored 49 points and their bench scored 15 points

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)

We assisted 9 of our 27 field goals = 33.3%
They assisted 12 of their 18 field goals = 66.7%

Team Offensive Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)

We scored 72 points in 66 possessions = 1.091 points/possession
They scored 64 points in 66 possessions = 0.970 points/ possession
It was a 132 possession game.

Breakdown by Quarters
(Points scored between the beginning of the game and the 10 minute mark of the first half, then halftime, then the 10 minute mark of the second half, the end of regulation and then overtime of there was one)

17-10, 16-22, 19-11, 20-21

Fouls
(Two point shots, points in paint and free throws attempted per times fouled.)

We attempted 63 two point shots, scored 26 points in the paint, attempted 20 free throws and were fouled 18 times = 3.50; 1.44; 1.11
They attempted 54 two point shots, scored 10 points in the paint, attempted 22 free throws and were fouled 18 times = 3.00; 0.55; 1.22

They more likely to draw a foul and to get to the line and got more free throws per foul.

Comments:

- Chukwu went from 26NP to -1NP. He, Battle, Brissett and Howard have all had 20+NP games in this young season. It’s a good thing we’ve got a lot of guys who can have a good game because with such a young team, consistency is going to be hard to come by.

- It was the first time Tyus Battle had not been our high scorer, our most efficient scorer and the ODOG. Frank Howard inherited all those titles and put up the exact sort of numbers Battle had bene putting up.

- Against Oakland we had 41 first chance points and they had 30. In this game we had 30 first chance points and Toledo had 41. No matter: we won both.

- We have 80 offensive rebounds on the season to 46: We are rebounding 42% of our misses to 23% for the opposition. We’ve scored 83 second chance points to 46. But how well will that hold up against the bigger, better teams?

- We’ve also scored 79 points off turnovers to 52.That gives us 162 points in “unsettled” situations (second chance points + turnover points) to 98.

- We have 84 more ‘manufactured possession’ (298-214) than the opposition. That’s rebounds plus the other team’s turnovers, a difference of 17 a game. .

- The last two games, the opposition is 18 for 66 inside the arc: 27.3%!We have 68 more points in the paint this season (166-98). That’s what a shot blocker inside a zone can do.

- Despite this game, we are only giving up 31.5% from outside the arc this year. We are actually slightly better at 31.8%.

- We are making a poor 63.9% of our free throws.

- The opposition has out-scored us from the arc, 81-120, but we’ve out-scored them from the Twilight Zone, 58-10, +9 points more.

- There hasn’t been a lot of fast breaking but we lead in points, 36-20. We are also up 79-52 in points off turnovers.

- We lead in points by starters, 281-246 but have a bigger lead in bench points, 92-43. We are deeper than the teams we have played so far.

- We are getting only 50% of our baskets from assists to 73% for the opposition. We are going to the basket more, (more assists come off of jump shots than lay-ups and dunks).

- The refs seem more likely to call fouls on us, (2.65/1-1.95/1 on 2 points shots, 1.82/1-1.11/1 in the paint) than them.
