I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of each month. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.)

Net Points
(points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls)

Average net points/40 by position, (based on averaging 20+ minutes per game), since the 1980-81 season:
Centers 18.6; Power Forwards: 18.4; Small Forwards: 16.1, Shooting Guards: 13.3; Point Guards: 13.5

Buddy Boeheim +22NP in 40 minutes = +425NP in 1179 minutes = +14.4NP/40 for season
Joe Girard +13NP in 40 minutes = +345NP in 1008 minutes = +13.7NP/40 for season
Jimmy Boeheim +11NP in 40 minutes = +366NP in 1061 minutes = +13.8NP/40 for season
Bourama Sidibie +6NP in 15 minutes = +48NP in 128 minutes = +15.0NP/40 for season
Frank Anselem +2NP in 25 minutes = +100NP in 405 minutes = +9.9NP/40 for season
Cole Swider +2NP in 39 minutes = +396NP in 1074 minutes = +14.7NP/40 for season
John Bol Ajak -4NP in 1 minutes = +6NP in 54 minutes = +4.4NP/40 for season

DNP coach’s decision
Chaz Owens 0NP in 0 minutes = +3NP in 7 minutes = +17.1NP/40 for season

Injured or ill and couldn’t play
Jesse Edwards 0NP in 0 minutes = +352NP in 673 minutes = +20.9NP/40 for season
Symir Torrence 0NP in 0 minutes = +90NP in 317 minutes = +11.4NP/40 for season
Benny Williams 0NP in 0 minutes = +31NP in 313 minutes = +4.0NP/40 for season

Offensive Dude of the Game, (O-Dog)
(Points plus assists)
Buddy Boeheim 30 points and 0 assists = 30

Shooting Efficiency
(Points minus missed field goal and free throw attempts)
Buddy Boeheim 30 points – 9mfg – 0mft = +21

Scoring Efficiency
(Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points)
Buddy Boeheim 30 points of 52 = 57.7%

My Man
(Who played the most minutes?)
Buddy Boeheim, Jimmy Boeheim, and Joe Girard 40 minutes

TEAM STATS

Possession

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 14 of our 32 misses = 43.8%
They rebounded 6 of their 28 misses = 21.4%

Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)
We got 15 points on 14 O-Rebs = 1.071 points/O-Reb
They got 10 points on 6 O-Rebs = 1.667 points/O-Reb

Points per Takeover
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)
We had 10 points from 10 takeovers = 1.000 points/takeaway
They had 15 points from 11 takeovers = 1.364 points/takeaway

Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeover: [Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 25 points in 24 unsettled situations = 1.042 points/situation
They had 25 points in 17 unsettled situations = 1.471 points/situation

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 36 + 10 = 46
They had 34 + 11 = 45

Scoring

Shooting
(Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 9 for 35 on twos, (25.7%), 11 for 25 on threes (44.0%) and 21 for 23 on frees (91.3%)
They were 26 for 38 on twos, (68.4%), 3 for 18 on threes (16.7%) and 14 for 18 on frees (77.8%)

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum”
POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made
OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots)
TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint)
FT = Free Throws

We had 16 PIP, 35 POP, 33 OL, 2 TZ, 21 FT
They had 42 PIP, 19 POP, 9 OL, 10 TZ, 14 FT

Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 9 FBP in 41 opportunities (22.0%)
They scored 8 FBP in 29 opportunities (27.6%)

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 28 FCP and 15 SCP
They had 42 FCP and 10 SCP

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 71 points and our bench scored 1 points.
Their starters scored 73 points and their bench scored 2 points.

Efficiency

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 11 of our 20 field goals = 55.0%
They assisted 19 of their 29 field goals = 65.5%

Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 72 points in 68 possessions = 1.059 points/ possession
They scored 75 points in 69 possessions = 1.087 points/possession
It was a 137-possession game.

If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession:
We scored 72 points in 71 possessions = 1.014 points/ possession
They scored 75 points in 65 possessions = 1.154 points/possession

Team Shooting Efficiency

(Points minus missed field goals and free throws)

We scored 72 points, missed 40 field goals and missed 2 free throws = net +30
They scored 75 points, missed 27 field goals and missed 4 free throws = net +44

(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)

We scored 72 on 40 two-point attempts, 25 three-point attempts and 23 free throw attempts = 72 of a possible 168 points = 42.9% of possible points scored.
They scored 75 on 27 two-point attempts, 18 three-point attempts and 18 free throw attempts = 75 of a possible 148 points = 50.7% of possible points scored.

Fouls

(Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.)
We attempted 38 two-point shots and were fouled 15 times = 2.53
They attempted 35 two-point shots and were fouled 16 times = 2.19

Comments:

- John Bol Ajak’s performance of accumulating -4NP in 1 minute of playing time is truly remarkable. He missed a shot, turned the ball over and committed two fouls. He also failed to get the most important rebound of the game.

- We rebounded a higher percent age of our missed shots than we have all year and had the biggest gap between our percentage the opposition’s percentage of the season.

- In the years I’ve kept track of it, two point field goal percent age has been one of the most important predictors of victory in college basketball games and it certainly decided this one. U of Miami made 68% of their two point field goal attempts, a very high percentage but we only made 26%, the lowest I can remember seeing. It was even worse in the second half, (74%-21%).

- We only had 1 point from our bench but they only had 2.
