I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of each month. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.)

Net Points
(points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls)

Quincy Guerrier +27NP in 35 minutes = +243NP in 396 minutes = +24.5NP/40 for season
Joe Girard +19NP in 39 minutes = +107NP in 377 minutes = +11.4NP/40 for season
Kadary Richmond +17NP in 20 minutes = +117NP in 261 minutes = +17.9NP/40 for season
Buddy Boeheim +17NP in 35 minutes = +98NP in 319 minutes = +12.3NP/40 for season
Jesse Edwards +7NP in 23 minutes = 4NP in 43 minutes = +3.7NP/40 for season
Marek Dolezaj +4NP in 27 minutes = +164NP in 420 minutes = +15.6NP/40 for season
Alan Griffin +3NP in 16minutes = +179NP in 377 minutes = +19.0NP/40 for season
Robert Braswell 0NP in 1 minute = +11NP in 96 minutes = +4.6NP/40 for season
Chaz Owens 0NP in 1 minute = 0NP in 1 minute = 0.0NP/40 for season

DNP coach’s decision
Frank Anselem 0NP in 0 minutes = +5NP in 26 minutes = +7.7NP/40 for season
John Bol Ajak 0NP in 0 minutes = -1NP in 29 minutes = -1.4NP/40 for season
Woody Newton 0NP in 0 minutes = +38NP in 78 minutes = +19.5NP/40 for season

Offensive Dude of the Game, (O-Dog)
(Points plus assists)
Joe Girard 23 points and 4 assists = 27

Shooting Efficiency
(Points minus missed field goal and free throw attempts)
Buddy Boeheim 23 points – 7 mfg – 0 mft = +16
Joe Girard 23 points – 7 mfg – 0 mft = +16
Quincy Guerrier 18 points – 2 mfg – 0 mft = +16

Scoring Efficiency
(Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points)
Quincy Guerrier 18 points of 23 = 78.2%

My Man
(Who played the most minutes?)
Joe Girard 39 minutes

TEAM STATS

Possession

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 7 of our 30 misses = 23.3%
They rebounded 10 of their 37 misses = 27.0%

Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)
We got 10 points on 7 O-Rebs = 1.429 points/O-Reb
They got 6 points on 10 O-Rebs = 0.600 points/O-Reb

Unforced Turnovers
(Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers)
We had 8 turnovers – 6 steals = 2 unforced
They had 17 turnovers – 11 steals = 6 unforced

Points per Takeover
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)
We had 27 points from 17 takeovers = 1.588 points/takeaway
They had 3 points from 8 takeovers = 0.375 points/takeaway

Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeover: [Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 37 points in 24 unsettled situations = 1.542 points
They had 9 points in 18 unsettled situations = 0.500 points

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 34 + 17 = 51
They had 33 + 8 = 41

Hustle Stats
One of the radio sponsors gives an award to the team that had the most “hustle stats”, which they define as rebounds + blocks + steals. I decided to keep track of that, too:
We had 34 + 5 + 11= 50
They had 32 + 5 + 6 = 44

Scoring

Shooting
(Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 22 for 36 on twos, (61.1%), 10 for 25 on threes (40.0%) and 9 for 11 on frees (81.8%)
They were 18 for 31 on twos, (58.1%), 4 for 25 on threes (16.0%) and 9 for 13 on frees (69.2%)
Combined percentages were: 611 + 400 + 818 = 1,829 vs. 581 + 160 + 692 = 1,433 = +396

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum”
POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made
OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots)
TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint)
FBP = fast break points
POTO= points off turnovers

We had 32 PIP, 42 POP, 30 OL, 12 TZ, 27 POTO, 14 FBP
They had 28 PIP, 20 POP, 12 OL, 8 TZ, 3 POTO, 11 FBP

Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 14 FBP in 43 opportunities (32.6%)
They scored 11 FBP in 34 opportunities (32.4%)

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 50 FCP and 10 SCP
They had 31 FCP and 6 SCP

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 74 points and our bench scored 2 points.
Their starters scored 89 points and their bench scored 7 points.

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 19 of our 32 field goals = 59.4%
They assisted 9 of their 22 field goals = 40.9%

Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 83 points in 68 possessions = 1.221 points/ possession
They scored 57 points in 69 possessions = 0.826 points/possession
It was a 137-possession game.

If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession:
We scored 83 points in 66 possessions = 1.258 points/ possession
They scored 57 points in 62 possessions = 0.919 points/possession

Team Shooting Efficiency

(Points minus missed field goals and free throws)

We scored 83 points, missed 29 field goals and missed 2 free throws = net +52
They scored 57 points, missed 34 field goals and missed 4 free throws = net +19

(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)

We scored 83 on 36 two point attempts, 25 three point attempts and 11 free throw attempts = 83 of a possible 158 points = 52.5% of possible points scored.
They scored 57 on 31 two point attempts, 25 three point attempts and 13 free throw attempts = 57 of a possible 150 points = 38.0% of possible points scored.

Fouls

(Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.)
We attempted 36 two point shots and were fouled 12 times = 3.00
They attempted 31 two point shots and were fouled 12 times = 2.58
At this rate, if they’d taken 36 two point shots, they’d have been fouled 14 times.

Comments

- According to the box score, we had a Chaz Owens sighting and thus all 13 of our scholarship players have played in games this year.

- You know you’ve had a really good offensive night when there’s a three way tie for “shooting efficiency”. (Or a really bad one.)

- We won this game on the ‘unsettled situations” – what happens after a turnover or an offensive rebound. We scored 37 points in 24 such situations. They scored 9 points in 18 such situations. The fact that we had a point guard and they didn’t was a huge factor. It was the first time since the BC game that we’d won that stat and we won it by 28 points.
