I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of each month. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.)

Net Points
(points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls)

Jesse Edwards +26NP in 38 minutes = +208NP in 396 minutes = +21.0NP/40 for season
Joe Girard +21NP in 37 minutes = +185NP in 468 minutes = +15.8NP/40 for season
Cole Swider +17NP in 35 minutes = +176NP in 468 minutes = +14.9NP/40 for season
Jimmy Boeheim +7NP in 32 minutes = +174NP in 477 minutes = +14.6NP/40 for season
Buddy Boeheim +7NP in 35 minutes = +193NP in 519 minutes = +14.9NP/40 for season
Symir Torrence +4NP in 14 minutes = +40NP in 166 minutes = +9.6NP/40 for season
Benny Williams +1NP in 9 minutes = +16NP in 183 minutes = +3.5NP/40 for season

DNP coach’s decision
John Bol Ajak 0NP in 0 minutes = +5NP in 13 minutes = +15.4NP/40 for season
Frank Anselem 0NP in 0 minutes = +35NP in 140 minutes = +10.0NP/40 for season
Chaz Owens 0NP in 0 minutes = +4NP in 4 minutes = +40.0NP/40 for season
Bourama Sidibie 0NP in 0 minutes = 0NP in 5 minutes = 0.0NP/40 for season

Offensive Dude of the Game, (O-Dog)
(Points plus assists)
Joe Girard 26 points and 2 assists = 28

Shooting Efficiency
(Points minus missed field goal and free throw attempts)
Jesse Edwards 22 points – 3mfg – 1mft = +18 and
Joe Girard 26 points – 7mfg – 1mft = +18

Scoring Efficiency
(Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points)
Jesse Edwards 22 points of 29 = 75.9%

My Man
(Who played the most minutes?)
Jesse Edwards 38 minutes

TEAM STATS

Possession

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 13 of our 34 misses = 38.2%
They rebounded 13 of their 37 misses = 35.7%

Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)
We got 13 points on 13 O-Rebs = 1.000 points/O-Reb
They got 12 points on 13 O-Rebs = 0.923 points/O-Reb

Points per Takeover
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)
We had 11 points from 10 takeovers = 1.100 points/takeaway
They had 25 points from 19 takeovers = 1.316 points/takeaway

Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeover: [Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 24 points in 23 unsettled situations = 1.043 points/situation
They had 37 points in 32 unsettled situations = 1.316 points/situation

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 37 + 10 = 47
They had 34 + 19 = 53

Scoring

Shooting
(Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 12 for 27 on twos, (44.4%), 17 for 32 on threes (53.1%) and 12 for 18 on frees (66.7)
They were 18 for 35 on twos, (51.4%), 11 for 30 on threes (36.7%) and 19 for 24 on frees (79.2%)

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum”
POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made
OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots)
TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint)
FT = Free Throws

We had 22 PIP, 53 POP, 51 OL, 2 TZ, 13 FT
They had 34 PIP, 43 POP, 33 OL, 10 TZ, 19 FT

Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 3 FBP in 37 opportunities (8.1%)
They scored 18 FBP in 37 opportunities (48.6%)

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 59 FCP and 13 SCP
They had 39 FCP and 12 SCP

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 84 points and our bench scored 3 points.
Their starters scored 69 points and their bench scored 19 points.

Efficiency

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 21 of our 29 field goals = 72.4%
They assisted 16 of their 29 field goals = 53.2%

Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 87 points in 74 possessions = 1.176 points/ possession
They scored 88 points in 73 possessions = 1.205 points/possession
It was a 147-possession game.

If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession:
We scored 87 points in 68 possessions = 1.279 points/ possession
They scored 88 points in 76 possessions = 1.158 points/possession

Team Shooting Efficiency

(Points minus missed field goals and free throws)

We scored 87 points, missed 30 field goals and missed 6 free throws = net +51
They scored 88 points, missed 36 field goals and missed 5 free throws = net +47

(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)

We scored 87 on 27 two-point attempts, 32 three-point attempts and 18 free throw attempts = 87 of a possible 168 points = 51.8% of possible points scored.
They scored 88 on 35 two-point attempts, 30 three-point attempts and 24 free throw attempts = 88 of a possible 184 points = 47.8% of possible points scored.

Fouls

(Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.)
We attempted 27 two-point shots and were fouled 13 times = 2.08
They attempted 35 two-point shots and were fouled 14 times = 1.84
If we’d attempted 35 two-point field goals at that rate, we’d have been fouled 17 times.

Comments:

- The Boeheim brother do things together. They’ve been our most consistent performers and last night, they both had bad games at the same time. The one other time that happened was also in the state of Florida, in the Florida State game. Here are their net point totals in the 14 games:
JB 19, 13, 13, 22, 11, 0, 17, 5, 14, 3, 18, 18, 14, 7
BB 20, 20, 8, 16, 20, 11, 24, 5, -6, 12, 25, 16, 19, 7
What is interesting about this is that we came within a couple points of sweeping those games. Are we a better team when we aren’t relying on the Boeheims to carry us?

- Jesse Edwards had a great game, (even above the 6 turnovers), so we now why he played 38 minutes. But Frank Anselem didn’t play the other two, (I assume Jimmy Boeheim did). I’m guessing that JB realized we were going to have to out-score this team and wanted a guy who can score in that spot, even for those two minutes. Frank’s development can wait.

- Captain Obvious here: When you scored 11 points off of your turnovers and they scored 25 off of yours and you lost by one point, that’s the biggest reason that you lost.

- But that’s not the most remarkable stat of the game. We were 12/27 on two point shots and Jesse Edwards was 10 for 13, meaning that Jesse’s teammates were 2 for 14 on two points shots. That’s 14%! Jimmy Boeheim was 1 for 5, Cole Swider 0 for 2, Benny Williams 0 for 1, Buddy Boeheim 0 for 1, Joe Girard 1 for 3 and Sym Torrence 0 for 3. That’s on top of the 19 turnovers, most of which were within the arc. We shot 53% from three, 44% from two, 77% when Jesse shot the ball and 14% when he didn’t and it wasn’t a three.

- This was the 6th straight game in which we had an inferior free throw shooting percentage to that of our opponents. We are 62 for 102 in those games, (60.8%). We lost four of those games by a total of 24 points. This despite having three starters shooting 85-90% from the line. But Joe, Buddy and Cole only got to the line 35 times in those games. They hit 28 of their shots, (80%). Their teammates hit 27 of 67 (40%). So the guys who shoot 2/3 of our free throws are shooting 40% and the guys who shoot the other third are shooting 80%.

- Only one team all year has had as many fast break points against us: Lafayette?!? They also had 18. But we had 24 fast break points in that game – and just 3 against Miami.
