I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of each month. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.) Net Points (points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls) Quincy Guerrier +19NP in 32 minutes = +363NP in 733 minutes = +19.8NP/40 for season Buddy Boeheim +17NP in 39 minutes = +195NP in 681 minutes = +11.5NP/40 for season Marek Dolezaj +13NP in 36 minutes = +284NP in 767 minutes = +14.8NP/40 for season Jesse Edwards +11NP in 24 minutes = +26NP in 95 minutes = +10.9NP/40 for season Kadary Richmond +9NP in 31 minutes = +196NP in 491 minutes = +16.0NP/40 for season Alan Griffin +2NP in 23 minutes = +321NP in 697 minutes = +18.4NP/40 for season Robert Braswell 0NP in 5 minutes = +30NP in 147 minutes = +8.2NP/40 for season Joe Girard -1NP in 10 minutes = +168NP in 614 minutes = +10.9NP/40 for season DNP coach’s decision John Bol Ajak 0NP in 0 minutes = -1NP in 50 minutes = -0.8NP/40 for season Frank Anselem 0NP in 0 minutes = +5NP in 26 minutes = +7.7NP/40 for season Woody Newton 0NP in 0 minutes = +31NP in 86 minutes = +14.4NP/40 for season Chaz Owens 0NP in 0 minute = 0NP in 1 minute = 0.0NP/40 for season Injured and couldn’t play Bourama Sidibie 0NP in 0 minutes = 0NP in 15 minutes = 0.0NP/40 for season Suspended Redshirting None (that we know of) Out for the year None Left Team None Awards Offensive Dude of the Game, (O-Dog) (Points plus assists) Buddy Boeheim 26 points and 2 assists = 28 Shooting Efficiency (Points minus missed field goal and free throw attempts) Buddy Boeheim 26 points – 11 mfg – 1 mft = +14 Scoring Efficiency (Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points) Quincy Guerrier 18 points of 31 = 58.1% My Man (Who played the most minutes?) Buddy Boeheim 39 minutes TEAM STATS Possession Rebounding (Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that) We rebounded 13 of our 40 misses = 32.5% They rebounded 26 of their 46 misses = 56.5% Effective Offensive Rebounding (Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds) We got 10 points on 13 O-Rebs = 0.769 points/O-Reb They got 25 points on 26 O-Rebs = 0.962 points/O-Reb Unforced Turnovers (Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers) We had 12 turnovers – 6 steals = 6 unforced They had 20 turnovers – 15 steals = 5 unforced Points per Takeover (Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had) We had 28 points from 20 takeovers = 1.400 points/takeaway They had 9 points from 12 takeovers = 0.750 points/takeaway Unsettled Situations (Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeover: [Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers) We had 38 points in 33 unsettled situations = 1.152 points They had 34 points in 38 unsettled situations = 0.894 points Manufactured Possessions (One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers) We had 33 + 20 = 53 They had 53 + 9 = 62 Hustle Stats One of the radio sponsors gives an award to the team that had the most “hustle stats”, which they define as rebounds + blocks + steals. I decided to keep track of that, too: We had 33 + 9 + 15 = 57 They had 53 + 1 + 6 = 60 Scoring Shooting (Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws) We were 19 for 39 on twos, (48.7%), 8 for 27 on threes (29.6%) and 10 for 14 on frees (71.4%) They were 22 for 48 on twos, (45.8%), 4 for 20 on threes (25.0%) and 14 for 22 on frees (63.6%) Combined percentages were: 487 + 296 + 714 = 1,497 vs. 458 + 250 + 636 = 1,344 = +153 Points (PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum” POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots) TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint) FBP = fast break points POTO= points off turnovers We had 32 PIP, 30 POP, 24 OL, 6 TZ, 28 POTO, 20 FBP They had 38 PIP, 18 POP, 12 OL, 6 TZ, 9 POTO, 9 FBP Fast Break Percentage (FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals) We scored 20 FBP in 37 opportunities (54.1%) They scored 9 FBP in 33 opportunities (27.3%) First Chance/Second Chance (FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.) We had 32 FCP and 10 SCP They had 22 FCP and 25 SCP Starters/Bench (Total points – bench points = starters points) Our starters scored 60 points and our bench scored 12 points. Their starters scored 47 points and their bench scored 23 points. Assists (The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted) We assisted 18 of our 27 field goals = 66.7% They assisted 16 of their 26 field goals = 61.5% Team Offensive Possession Efficiency (Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions) We scored 72 points in 72 possessions = 1.000 points/ possession They scored 70 points in 72 possessions = 0.972 points/possession It was a 144-possession game. If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession: We scored 72 points in 73 possessions = 0.986 points/ possession They scored 70 points in 78 possessions = 1.029 points/possession Team Shooting Efficiency (Points minus missed field goals and free throws) We scored 72 points, missed 39 field goals and missed 4 free throws = net +29 They scored 70 points, missed 42 field goals and missed 8 free throws = net +20 (Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot) We scored 72 on 39 two point attempts, 27 three point attempts and 14 free throw attempts = 72 of a possible 173 points = 41.6% of possible points scored. They scored 70 on 48 two point attempts, 20 three point attempts and 22 free throw attempts = 70 of a possible 178 points = 39.3% of possible points scored. Fouls (Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.) We attempted 39 two point shots and were fouled 16 times = 2.44 They attempted 48 two point shots and were fouled 18 times = 2.67 At this rate, if we’d taken 48 two point shots, we’d have been fouled 20 times. Comments - Normally the defensive team will get 2/3 of the rebounds. Basically, if you don’t get the rebound, you haven’t played defense at all. Two team’s in SU’s games this year have gotten rebounds on more than 50% of their misses and both were North Carolina: 24/45 = 53.3% in the first game and 26/46 = 56.5% in this one. - The Tar Heels got 101 of the 165 rebounds in the two games – yet we can close to sweeping them. We must be really good at other stuff. - Here’s one: 15 steals. 15! - We had 9 blocked shots to 1 against a bigger team. - Any time you have 20 fast break points to 9 for North Carolina, you’ve got a shot to win. - Or 28 points off turnovers negated their 25 second chance points. - Jim Boeheim has always argued against trying to wear down a team with waves of players. He figures his starters will prove better than your second wave. Ray Williams replaced starting line-ups like hockey teams replace attack lines. 5 guys would go out and 5 other guys would come in. Boeheim loved it when Armando Bacot (18 points and 15 rebounds) came out and Walker Kessler (4 points and 3 rebounds) came in to the g
