I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of each month. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.) Net Points (points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls) Average net points/40 by position, (based on averaging 20+ minutes per game), since the 1980-81 season: Centers 18.6; Power Forwards: 18.4; Small Forwards: 16.1, Shooting Guards: 13.3; Point Guards: 13.5 Cole Swider +25NP in 43 minutes = +394NP in 1035 minutes = +15.2NP/40 for season Buddy Boeheim +15NP in 45 minutes = +403NP in 1139 minutes = +14.2NP/40 for season Bourama Sidibie +11NP in 25 minutes = +42NP in 113 minutes = +14.9NP/40 for season Jimmy Boeheim +8NP in 18 minutes = +355NP in 1021 minutes = +13.9NP/40 for season Frank Anselem +3NP in 18 minutes = +98NP in 380 minutes = +10.3NP/40 for season Joe Girard +2NP in 45 minutes = +332NP in 968 minutes = +13.7NP/40 for season Benny Williams -3NP in 8 minutes = +31NP in 313 minutes = +4.0NP/40 for season DNP coach’s decision John Bol Ajak 0NP in 0 minutes = +10NP in 53 minutes = +7.5NP/40 for season Chaz Owens 0NP in 0 minutes = +3NP in 7 minutes = +17.1NP/40 for season Injured or ill and couldn’t play Jesse Edwards 0NP in 0 minutes = +352NP in 673 minutes = +20.9NP/40 for season Symir Torrence 0NP in 0 minutes = +90NP in 317 minutes = +11.4NP/40 for season Suspended None Redshirting None Out for the year None Left Team None Awards Offensive Dude of the Game, (O-Dog) (Points plus assists) Cole Swider 36 points and 0 assists = 36 Shooting Efficiency (Points minus missed field goal and free throw attempts) Cole Swider 36 points – 7mfg – 1mft = +28 Scoring Efficiency (Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points) Cole Swider 36 points of 55 = 65.5% My Man (Who played the most minutes?) Buddy Boeheim 45 minutes TEAM STATS Possession Rebounding (Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that) We rebounded 5 of our 33 misses = 15.2% They rebounded 16 of their 41 misses = 39.0% Effective Offensive Rebounding (Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds) We got 6 points on 5 O-Rebs = 1.200 points/O-Reb They got 18 points on 16 O-Rebs = 1.125 points/O-Reb Points per Takeover (Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had) We had 11 points from 8 takeovers = 1.375 points/takeaway They had 10 points from 11 takeovers = 0.909 points/takeaway Unsettled Situations (Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeover: [Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers) We had 17 points in 13 unsettled situations = 1.308 points/situation They had 28 points in 27 unsettled situations = 1.037 points/situation Manufactured Possessions (One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers) We had 30 + 8 = 38 They had 44 + 11 = 55 Scoring Shooting (Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws) We were 21 for 38 on twos, (55.3%), 10 for 25 on threes (40.0%) and 7 for 8 on frees (87.5%) They were 15 for 35 on twos, (42.9%), 14 for 36 on threes (38.9%) and 16 for 20 on frees (80.0%) Points (PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum” POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots) TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint) FT = Free Throws We had 28 PIP, 44 POP, 30 OL, 14 TZ, 7 FT They had 24 PIP, 48 POP, 42 OL, 6 TZ, 16 FT Fast Break Percentage (FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals) We scored 0 FBP in 31 opportunities (0.0%) They scored 9 FBP in 34 opportunities (26.5%) First Chance/Second Chance (FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.) We had 66 FCP and 6 SCP They had 45 FCP and 18 SCP Starters/Bench (Total points – bench points = starters points) Our starters scored 71 points and our bench scored 8 points. Their starters scored 64 points and their bench scored 24 points. Efficiency Assists (The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted) We assisted 9 of our 31 field goals = 24.8% They assisted 21 of their 29 field goals = 72.4% Team Offensive Possession Efficiency (Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions) We scored 79 points in 73 possessions = 1.082 points/ possession They scored 88 points in 76 possessions = 1.205 points/possession It was a 146-possession game. If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession: We scored 79 points in 67 possessions = 1.179 points/ possession They scored 88 points in 81 possessions = 1.443 points/possession Team Shooting Efficiency (Points minus missed field goals and free throws) We scored 79 points, missed 32 field goals and missed 1 free throws = net +46 They scored 88 points, missed 42 field goals and missed 4 free throws = net +42 (Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot) We scored 79 on 40 two-point attempts, 19 three-point attempts and 10 free throw attempts = 79 of a possible 159 points = 49.7% of possible points scored. They scored 88 on 33 two-point attempts, 32 three-point attempts and 17 free throw attempts = 88 of a possible 198 points = 44.4% of possible points scored. Fouls (Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.) We attempted 38 two-point shots and were fouled 9 times = 4.22 They attempted 35 two-point shots and were fouled 15 times = 2.33 Comments: - Cole Swider actually had a poor game except for his shooting. In 43 minutes he got 3 rebounds and had no assists, steals or blocks and he committed 5 fouls and had a turnover. With 7 missed field goals and a missed free throw That’s a net -11, except, of course for the 36 points, which gave him 25NP, quite an improvement from his 2NP vs. Duke. - It was Hubert Davis who, in 2013 as a TV commentator, urged Syracuse to “get yourself an offensive dude!”. We did, Hubert, we did. - Points in the paint vs. Duke and North Carolina combined: 64-64. - We crushed them in our opening sets 66-45. Unfortunately we had 6 second chance points, 7 made free throws and zero fast beak points.
