TEAM STATS

Possession

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 11 of our 42 misses = 26.2%
They rebounded 16 of their 49 misses = 32.7%

Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)
We got 4 points on 11 O-Rebs = 0.364 points/O-Reb
They got 10 points on 16 O-Rebs = 0.625 points/O-Reb

Unforced Turnovers
(Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers)
We had 12 turnovers – 6 steals = 6 unforced
They had 15 turnovers – 7 steals = 8 unforced

Points per Takeover
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)
We had 11 points from 15 takeovers = 0.733 points/takeaway
They had 18 points from 12 takeovers = 1.500 points/takeaway

Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeover: [Second Chance Point s+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 15 points in 26 unsettled situations = 0.577 points
They had 28 points in 28 unsettled situations = 1.000 points

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 44 + 15 = 59
They had 47 + 12 = 59

Hustle Stats
One of the radio sponsors gives an award to the team that had the most “hustle stats”, which they define as rebounds + steals + blocks. I decided to keep track of that, too:
We had 44 + 2 + 7 = 53
They had 47 + 3 + 6= 56

Scoring

Shooting
(Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 8 for 31 on twos, (25.8%), 12 for 30 on threes (40.0%) and 11 for 15 on frees (73.3%)
They were 14 for 36 on twos, (38.9%), 7 for 31 on threes (22.6%) and 6 for 11 on frees (54.5%)
Combined percentages were: 1391 (258 + 400 + 733) vs. 1160 (389 + 226 + 545) = +231

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum”
POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made
OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots)
TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint)
FBP = fast break points
POTO= points off turnovers

We had 12 PIP, 39 POP, 36 OL, 3 TZ, 11 POTO, 13 FBP
They had 20 PIP, 29 POP, 21 OL, 8 TZ, 18 POTO, 15 FBP

Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 13 FBP in 42 opportunities (31.0%)
They scored 15 FBP in 40 opportunities (37.5%)

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 35 FCP and 4 SCP
They had 24 FCP and 10 SCP

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 62 points and our bench scored 1 points
Their starters scored 49 points and their bench scored 6 points

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 11 of our 20 field goals = 55.0%
They assisted 15 of their 21 field goals = 71.4%

Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 63 points in 70 possessions = 0.900 points/ possession
They scored 55 points in 71 possessions = 0.775 points/possession
It was a 141 possession game.

If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession:
We scored 63 points in 68 possessions = 0.926 points/ possession
They scored 67 points in 72 possessions = 0.931 points/possession

Team Shooting Efficiency

(Points minus missed field goals and free throws)

We scored 63 points, missed 41 field goals and missed 4 free throws = net +18
They scored 55 points, missed 46 field goals and missed 5 free throws = net +4

(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)

We scored 63 on 31 two point attempts, 30 three point attempts and 15 free throw attempts = 63 of a possible 167 points = 37.7% of possible points scored.
They scored 55 on 36 two point attempts, 31 three point attempts and 11 free throw attempts = 55 of possible 176 points = 31.25% of possible points scored.

Breakdown by Quarters
(Points scored between the beginning of the game and the 10 minute mark of the first half, then halftime, then the 10 minute mark of the second half, the end of regulation and then overtime of there was one)

9-9, 15-9, 8-17, 11-8 OT: 20-8

Fouls

(Two point shots and free throws attempted per times fouled.)
We attempted 31 two point shots, attempted 15 free throws and were fouled 18 times = 1.72; 0.83
They attempted 36 two point shots, attempted 11 free throws and were fouled 17 times = 2.12; 0.65
They were much more likely to get calls when attempting two point shots and got more shots per foul.

Comments

- Normally point sin unsettled situations 9offensive rebounds and turnovers), is a key stat in determining the winner. Not today. The Cavs had 28 points in 28 situations, (about average). We had just 15 points in 26 situations. It hurts to have no reliable inside scoring. But we overcame it tonight.

- Tony Bennett is a heck of a defensive coach. But Jim Boeheim and his zone held Tony’s team to 0.775 points per possession while we scored 0.900 against Tony’s defense. So there!
