I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of each month. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.) This is limited to recruited scholarship players only. Net Points (points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls) Average net points/40 by position, (based on averaging 20+ minutes per game), since the 1980-81 season: Centers 18.6; Power Forwards: 18.4; Small Forwards: 16.1, Shooting Guards: 13.3; Point Guards: 13.5 Judah Mintz +15NP in 36 minutes = +262NP in 735 minutes = +14.3NP/40 for season Jesse Edwards +14NP in 39 minutes = +441NP in 710 minutes = +24.8NP/40 for season Maliq Brown +13NP in 40 minutes = +196NP in 381 minutes = +20.6NP/40 for season Symir Torrence +5NP in 8 minutes = +106NP in 271 minutes = +15.6NP/40 for season Chris Bell +5NP in 9 minutes = +91NP in 440 minutes = +8.3NP/40 for season Joe Girard +5NP in 36 minutes = +257NP in 783 minutes = +13.1NP/40 for season Mounir Hima 0NP in 1 minutes = +51NP in 178 minutes = +11.5NP/40 for season Justin Taylor 0NP in 31 minutes = +101NP in 381 minutes = +10.6NP/40 for season DNP coach’s decision John Bol Ajak 0NP in 0 minutes = +34NP in 120 minutes = +11.3NP/40 for season Quadir Copeland 0NP in 0 minutes = +25NP in 100 minutes = +10.0NP/40 for season Injured or ill and couldn’t play None Suspended None Redshirting Peter Carey 0NP in 0 minutes = -2NP in 20 minutes = -4.0NP/40 for season Out for the year None Left Team Benny Williams 0NP in 0 minutes = +137NP in 491 minutes = +11.2NP/40 for season (unknown if permanent) Awards Offensive Dude of the Game, (O-Dog) (Points plus assists) Judah Mintz 20 points and 1 assists = 21 Shooting Efficiency (Points minus missed field goal and free throw attempts) Judah Mintz 20 points – 5mfg – 3mft = +12 Scoring Efficiency (Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points) Maliq Brown 8 points of 12 = 66.7% My Man (Who played the most minutes?) Maliq Brown 40 minutes TEAM STATS Possession Rebounding (Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that) We rebounded 8 of our 26 misses = 30.8% They rebounded 11 of their 28 misses = 39.3% Unsettled Situations [Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers) We had 23 points in 22 unsettled situations = 1.045 points/situation They had 30 points in 25 unsettled situations = 1.200 points/situation Manufactured Possessions (One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers) We had 25 + 14 = 39 They had 29 + 14 = 43 Scoring Shooting (Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws) We were 21 for 33 on twos, (63.6%), 3 for 15 on threes (20.0%) and 11 for 18 on frees (61.1%) They were 14 for 29 on twos, (48.3%), 9 for 21 on threes (42.9%) and 12 for 15 on frees (80.0%) Points (PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum” POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots) TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint) FT = Free Throws We had 36 PIP, 15 POP, 9 OL, 6 TZ, 11 FT They had 20 PIP, 35 POP, 27 OL, 8 TZ, 12 FT Fast Break Percentage (FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals) We scored 7 FBP in 33 opportunities (21.2%) They scored 13 FBP in 23 opportunities (47.8%) First Chance/Second Chance (FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.) We had 32 FCP and 12 SCP They had 32 FCP and 10 SCP Starters/Bench (Total points – bench points = starters points) Our starters scored 55 points and our bench scored 7 points. Their starters scored 55 points and their bench scored 12 points. Efficiency Assists (The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted) We assisted 11 of our 24 field goals = 45.8% They assisted 19 of their 23 field goals = 82.6% Team Offensive Possession Efficiency (Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions) We scored 62 points in 63 possessions = 0.984 points/ possession They scored 67 points in 60 possessions = 1.116 points/possession It was a 123-possession game. If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession: We scored 62 points in 57 possessions = 1.086 points/ possession They scored 67 points in 57 possessions = 1.175 points/possession Team Shooting Efficiency (Points minus missed field goals and free throws) We scored 62 points, missed 24 field goals and missed 7 free throws = net +31 They scored 67 points, missed 27 field goals and missed 3 free throws = net +37 (Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot) We scored 62 on 33 two-point attempts, 15 three-point attempts and 18 free throw attempts = 62 of a possible 129 points = 48.1% of possible points scored. They scored 67 on 29 two-point attempts, 21 three-point attempts and 15 free throw attempts = 67 of a possible 136 points = 49.3% of possible points scored. Fouls (Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.) We attempted 33 two-point shots and were fouled 13 times = 2.54 They attempted 29 two-point shots and were fouled 12 times = 2.42 Comments: - The turnovers were equal, 14-14 but Virginia had 20 points off them to our 11. - Going up against the famous ”Pack Line Defense”, we dominated on the back line, hitting 21 of 33 two point attempts, (63.6%) and scored 36 points in the paint, compared to 14/29 (48.3%) and 20 for the Cavs. This compares to the lack of performance at Virginia Tech, where were 16/31 (51.6%) for 20 PIP vs. 19/28 (67.9%) and 34 PIP. - Unfortunately, we were outshot from the arc, (20%-43%) and the line, (61%-80%) and that’s where we lost this one. That’s our lowest three point percentage in 15 games and our lowest free throw percentage in 14 games. - Sad that Virginia’s pedantic offense had 13 fast break points to our 7, (when we had 5 blocks and 11 steals to their 1 and 4). When you have trouble scoring against a team, you want to beat them downcourt.
