TEAM STATS

Possession

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 9 of our 34 misses = 26.5%
They rebounded 8 of their 33 misses = 24.2%

Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)
We got 11 points on 9 O-Rebs = 1.222 points/O-Reb
They got 5 points on 8 O-Rebs = 0.625 points/O-Reb

Unforced Turnovers
(Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers)
We had 9 turnovers – 6 steals = 3 unforced
They had 11 turnovers – 6 steals = 5 unforced

Points per Takeover
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)
We had 8 points from 11 takeovers = 0.727 points/takeaway
They had 7 points from 9 takeovers = 0.778 points/takeaway

Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeover: [Second Chance Point s+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 19 points in 20 unsettled situations = 0.950 points
They had 16 points in 17 unsettled situations = 0.941 points

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 34 + 11 = 45
They had 33 + 9 = 42

Hustle Stats
One of the radio sponsors gives an award to the team that had the most “hustle stats”, which they define as rebounds + steals + blocks. I decided to keep track of that, too:
We had 38 + 1 + 6 = 45
They had 33 + 0 + 6= 39

Scoring

Shooting
(Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 17 for 36 on twos, (47.2%), 6 for 17 on threes (35.3%) and 11 for 17 on frees (64.7%)
They were 11 for 14 on twos, (78.6%), 10 for 36 on threes (27.8%) and 15 for 21 on frees (71.4%)
Combined percentages were: 1472 (472 + 353 + 647) vs. 1778 (786 + 278 + 714) = -306

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum”
POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made
OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots)
TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint)
FBP = fast break points
POTO= points off turnovers

We had 28 PIP, 24 POP, 18 OL, 6 TZ, 8 POTO, 1 FBP
They had 14 PIP, 38 POP, 30 OL, 8 TZ, 7 POTO, 14 FBP

Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 1 FBP in 32 opportunities (3.1%)
They scored 14 FBP in 31 opportunities (45.2%)

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 40 FCP and 11 SCP
They had 29 FCP and 5 SCP

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 51 points and our bench scored 12 points
Their starters scored 40 points and their bench scored 27 points

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 6 of our 23 field goals = 26.1%
They assisted 20 of their 21 field goals = 95.2%

Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 63 points in 61 possessions = 1.033 points/ possession
They scored 67 points in 62 possessions = 1.081 points/possession
It was a 123 possession game.

If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession:
We scored 63 points in 61 possessions = 1.033 points/ possession
They scored 67 points in 60 possessions = 1.117 points/possession

Team Shooting Efficiency

(Points minus missed field goals and free throws)

We scored 63 points, missed 30 field goals and missed 6 free throws = net +27
They scored 67 points, missed 29 field goals and missed 6 free throws = net +32

(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)

We scored 63 on 36 two point attempts, 17 three point attempts and 17 free throw attempts = 63 of a possible 140 points = 50.6% of possible points scored.
They scored 67 on 14 two point attempts, 36 three point attempts and 21 free throw attempts = 67 of possible 171 points = 39.2% of possible points scored.

Breakdown by Quarters
(Points scored between the beginning of the game and the 10 minute mark of the first half, then halftime, then the 10 minute mark of the second half, the end of regulation and then overtime of there was one)

12-9, 21-18, 11-15, 19-25

Fouls

(Two point shots and free throws attempted per times fouled.)
We attempted 36 two point shots, attempted 17 free throws and were fouled 18 times = 2.00; 0.94
They attempted 14 two point shots, attempted 21 free throws and were fouled 17 times = 0.82; 1.24
They were much more likely to get calls when attempting two point shots and got more shots per foul.

Comments

- Those of you who favor three point attempts over two point attempts: this was the game for you: The Hokies attempted 36 treys and 14 two points while we attempted 17 treys and 36 two pointers. We actually out-shot them from outside, 35%-28% but still lost that battle, (6-10), because they attempted so many more of them. And having to guard all their treys, we left the middle open and they shot an astonishing 79% on their two point shots to our 47%. But we still hit more two point shot, (17-11). But 3 is more than 2.

- Actually, both teams scored 52 points on field goals, so I guess that’s a wash.

- Strangely, they got to the line more than we did (21-17), and got 4 more points there – and that’s what they won by!

- Sometimes a foul discrepancy is just because one team got beat defensively more than the other and committed more fouls to make up for it. That could certainly account for the fouls Syracuse committed and foul shots Tech got. Sometimes the team that plays more physical defense gets away with more because the refs tend to call what seems unusual- beyond what a team would normally do. Besides, you can’t foul out the whole team! I think the Hokies took advent age of that- just as the Georgetown, Connecticut and Pittsburgh teams did in past years.

- I wish those refs had been the ones to decide whether the call at the end of the Notre Dame game was a foul or not. Those two four point plays the Hokies got look exactly like it.
