I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of each month. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.)
Net Points
(points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls)
Average net points/40 by position, (based on averaging 20+ minutes per game), since the 1980-81 season:
Centers 18.6; Power Forwards: 18.4; Small Forwards: 16.1, Shooting Guards: 13.3; Point Guards: 13.5
Frank Anselem +18NP in 36 minutes = +82NP in 279 minutes = +11.8NP/40 for season
Buddy Boeheim +10NP in 39 minutes = +344NP in 938 minutes = +14.7NP/40 for season
Joe Girard +8NP in 34 minutes = +304NP in 837 minutes = +14.5NP/40 for season
Cole Swider +5NP in 40 minutes = +316NP in 862 minutes = +14.7NP/40 for season
Symir Torrence +2NP in 7 minutes = +83NP in 280 minutes = +11.9NP/40 for season
Jimmy Boeheim +1NP in 37 minutes = +292NP in 865 minutes = +13.5NP/40 for season
Benny Williams 0NP in 3 minutes = +15NP in 263 minutes = +2.3NP/40 for season
Bourama Sidibie -1NP in 4 minutes = 0NP in 12 minutes = +0.0NP/40 for season
DNP coach’s decision
John Bol Ajak 0NP in 0 minutes = +8NP in 36 minutes = +8.9NP/40 for season
Chaz Owens 0NP in 0 minutes = +3NP in 5 minutes = +24.0NP/40 for season
Injured or ill and couldn’t play
Jesse Edwards 0NP in 0 minutes = +352NP in 673 minutes = +20.9NP/40 for season

Offensive Dude of the Game, (O-Dog)
(Points plus assists)
Buddy Boeheim 21 points and 3 assists = 24
Shooting Efficiency
(Points minus missed field goal and free throw attempts)
Buddy Boeheim 21 points – 11mfg – 1mft = +9
Scoring Efficiency
(Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points)
Joe Girard 16 points of 35 = 45.7%
My Man
(Who played the most minutes?)
Cole Swider 40 minutes
TEAM STATS
Possession
Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 10 of our 42 misses = 23.8%
They rebounded 9 of their 40 misses = 22.5%
Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)
We got 4 points on 10 O-Rebs = 0.400 points/O-Reb
They got 4 points on 9 O-Rebs = 0.444 points/O-Reb
Points per Takeover
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)
We had 2 points from 4 takeovers = 0.500 points/takeaway
They had 17 points from 11 takeovers = 1.545 points/takeaway
Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeover: [Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 6 points in 14 unsettled situations = 0.429 points/situation
They had 21 points in 20 unsettled situations = 1.050 points/situation
Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 41 + 4 = 45
They had 41 + 11 = 52
Scoring
Shooting
(Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 14 for 37 on twos, (37.8%), 10 for 27 on threes (37.0%) and 1 for 4 on frees (25.0%)
They were 15 for 33 on twos, (45.5%), 8 for 27 on threes (29.6%) and 17 for 21 on frees (81.0%)
Points
(PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum”
POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made
OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots)
TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint)
FT = Free Throws
We had 16 PIP, 42 POP, 30 OL, 12 TZ, 1 FT
They had 26 PIP, 28 POP, 24 OL, 4 TZ, 17 FT
Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 1 FBP in 36 opportunities (2.8%)
They scored 11 FBP in 43 opportunities (25.6%)
First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 53 FCP and 4 SCP
They had 39 FCP and 4 SCP
Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 57 points and our bench scored 2 points.
Their starters scored 57 points and their bench scored 14 points.
Efficiency
Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 9 of our 24 field goals = 37.5%
They assisted 20 of their 23 field goals = 87.0%
Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 59 points in 65 possessions = 0.908 points/ possession
They scored 71 points in 65 possessions = 1.092 points/possession
It was a 130-possession game.
If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession:
We scored 59 points in 66 possessions = 0.894 points/ possession
They scored 71 points in 70 possessions = 1.014 points/possession
Team Shooting Efficiency
(Points minus missed field goals and free throws)
We scored 59 points, missed 40 field goals and missed 3 free throws = net +16
They scored 71 points, missed 37 field goals and missed 4 free throws = net +30
(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)
We scored 59 on 37 two-point attempts, 27 three-point attempts and 4 free throw attempts = 59 of a possible 159 points = 37.1% of possible points scored.
They scored 71 on 33 two-point attempts, 27 three-point attempts and 21 free throw attempts = 71 of a possible 168 points = 42.3% of possible points scored.
Fouls
(Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.)
We attempted 37 two-point shots and were fouled 9 times = 4.11
They attempted 33 two-point shots and were fouled 18 times = 1.83
Comments:
- Cole Swider had 79NP during the winning streak, 5 in this one.
- We now have nobody in our line-up averaging 15.0NP per game. That’s a lack of star quality.
- In ACC games we have scored 156 points from 153 takeovers. Our opposition has 214 points from 155 takeovers.
- We’ve had at least 13 points in ‘unsettled situations’ in every game this year. We had 6 in this game – to 21 for Tech.
- In the last two games, without Jesse, we are 27 for 74 on two point shots. That’s just 36.5%. We’ve actually been better from three, (21/51: 41.2%).
- 1 made free throw and 1 fast break point is not a recipe for victory.
- That 4.11-1.83 gap in the frequency of foul calls is the third worst of the season, behind Drexel (4.75-2.08) and Wake Forest 1 (4.18-1.00). We got screwed in all three.
