I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of each month. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.)

Net Points
(points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls)

Buddy Boeheim +19NP in 40 minutes = +195NP in 484 minutes = +16.1NP/40 for season
Jimmy Boeheim +14NP in 38 minutes = +167NP in 445 minutes = +15.0NP/40 for season
Jesse Edwards +9NP in 31 minutes = +185NP in 338 minutes = +21.9NP/40 for season
Symir Torrence +6NP in 10 minutes = +48NP in 152 minutes = +12.6NP/40 for season
Cole Swider +6NP in 30 minutes = +157NP in 433 minutes = +14.5NP/40 for season
Benny Williams +4NP in 12 minutes = +15NP in 174 minutes = +3.4NP/40 for season
Joe Girard +2NP in 30 minutes = +165NP in 431 minutes = +15.3NP/40 for season
Frank Anselem +1NP in 9 minutes = +35NP in 140 minutes = +10.0NP/40 for season

DNP coach’s decision
John Bol Ajak 0NP in 0 minutes = +5NP in 13 minutes = +15.4NP/40 for season
Chaz Owens 0NP in 0 minutes = +4NP in 4 minutes = +40.0NP/40 for season
Bourama Sidibie 0NP in 0 minutes = 0NP in 5 minutes = 0.0NP/40 for season

Offensive Dude of the Game, (O-Dog)
(Points plus assists)
Buddy Boeheim 27 points and 5 assists = 32

Shooting Efficiency
(Points minus missed field goal and free throw attempts)
Buddy Boeheim 27 points – 10mfg – 1mft = +16

Scoring Efficiency
(Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points)
Jesse Edwards 9 points of 14 = 64.3%

My Man
(Who played the most minutes?)
Buddy Boeheim 40 minutes

TEAM STATS

Possession

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 18 of our 42 misses = 42.9%
They rebounded 9 of their 28 misses = 32.1%

Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)
We got 16 points on 18 O-Rebs = 0.889 points/O-Reb
They got 7 points on 9 O-Rebs = 0.778 points/O-Reb

Points per Takeover
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)
We had 14 points from 11 takeovers = 1.273 points/takeaway
They had 7 points from 9 takeovers = 0.778 points/takeaway

Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeover: [Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 23 points in 27 unsettled situations = 0.852 points/situation
They had 21 points in 20 unsettled situations = 1.050 points/situation

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 37 + 9 = 46
They had 33 + 11 = 44

Scoring

Shooting
(Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 12 for 30 on twos, (40.0%), 10 for 30 on threes (33.3%) and 15 for 23 on frees (65.2%)
They were 23 for 37 on twos, (62.2%), 7 for 20 on threes (35.0%) and 7 for 10 on frees (70.0%)

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum”
POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made
OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots)
TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint)
FT = Free Throws

We had 24 PIP, 30 POP, 30 OL, 0 TZ, 10 FT
They had 40 PIP, 27 POP, 21 OL, 6 TZ, 7 FT

Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 12 FBP in 33 opportunities (36.4%)
They scored 5 FBP in 37 opportunities (13.5%)

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 26 FCP and 7 SCP
They had 55 FCP and 16 SCP

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 65 points and our bench scored 4 points.
Their starters scored 63 points and their bench scored 11 points.

Efficiency

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 14 of our 22 field goals = 63.6%
They assisted 22 of their 30 field goals = 73.3%

Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 69 points in 64 possessions = 1.078 points/ possession
They scored 74 points in 62 possessions = 1.194 points/possession
It was a 126-possession game.

If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession:
We scored 69 points in 72 possessions = 0.972 points/ possession
They scored 74 points in 62 possessions = 1.194 points/possession

Team Shooting Efficiency

(Points minus missed field goals and free throws)

We scored 69 points, missed 38 field goals and missed 8 free throws = net +23
They scored 74 points, missed 27 field goals and missed 3 free throws = net +44

(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)

We scored 69 on 30 two-point attempts, 30 three-point attempts and 23 free throw attempts = 69 of a possible 173 points = 39.9% of possible points scored.
They scored 74 on 37 two-point attempts, 20 three-point attempts and 10 free throw attempts = 74 of a possible 144 points = 51.4% of possible points scored.

Fouls

(Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.)
We attempted 30 two-point shots and were fouled 17 times = 1.76
They attempted 37 two-point shots and were fouled 12 times = 3.08
If wey’d attempted 37 two-point field goals at that rate, they’d have been fouled 21 times.

Comments:
- - This was easily our best offensive rebounding game, getting 42.9% of our misses. We had 37.5% against Arizona State. The only other game where we won the rebounding battle but lost the game was VCU, another tough defensive team.

- Two point field goal percentage is often a determinate of victory. We’d won that battle three games in a row but came up way short in this one:
Georgetown 22/42 = .523 vs. 14/29 = .483
Brown 22/40 = .550 vs 14/36 = .389
Cornell 26/37 = .703 vs. 8/19 = .421
Virginia 12/30 = .400 vs. 23/37 = .622

- We are 4-1 when we score more points from the twilight Zone this season , 3-5 when we don’t. We didn’t get a single point from there in this game. Virginia kept hitting those medium range jumpers we couldn’t stop, some in the paint and some just outside of it. The had 40 points in the paint to our 24 and many of those were jumpers.

- We are 1-6 when losing the “First Chance Points” stat and last night we lost it big-time, 26-55.

- We are 0 for 13 in bench scoring. Even in the blow-out wins, our bench scored less than Lafayette and Brown.

- If both teams had made all their shots, we’d have won by 29 points.

- I think the reason why they were fouled so few times on their two point shots is that we weren’t defending them at all.
