I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of the non-conference season, the ACC season and the post season. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.)

Net Points
(points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls)

(season totals double-checked from Cuse.com stats on 3/1)

Marek Dolezaj +27NP in 37 minutes = +29.2NP/40 for season
Quincy Guerrier +18NP in 33 minutes = +21.8NP/40 for season
Alan Griffin +18NP in 38 minutes = +18.9NP/40 for season
Buddy Boeheim +17NP in 37 minutes = +18.4NP/40 for season
Kadary Richmond +6NP in 9 minutes = +26.7NP/40 for season
Bourama Sidibie +1NP in 4 minutes = +10.0NP/40 for season
Joe Girard +1NP in 34 minutes = +1.8NP/40 for season
Jesse Edwards 0NP in 1 minutes = +0.0NP/40 for season
Frank Anselem -1NP in 4 minutes = -1.0NP/40 for season
Robert Braswell -3NP in 3 minutes = -40.0NP/40 for season

Marek Dolezaj 20 points and 9 assists = 29

Shooting Efficiency
(Points minus missed field goal and free throw attempts)
Buddy Boeheim 23 points – 9 mfg – 0 mft = +14

Scoring Efficiency
(Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points)
Marek Dolezaj 20 points of 37 = 60.6%

My Man
(Who played the most minutes?)
Alan Griffin 38 minutes

TEAM STATS

Possession

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 15 of our 49 misses = 30.6%
They rebounded 10 of their 42 misses = 23.8%

Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)
We got 11 points on 15 O-Rebs = 0.733 points/O-Reb
They got 9 points on 10 O-Rebs = 0.900 points/O-Reb

Unforced Turnovers
(Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers)
We had 14 turnovers – 6 steals = 8 unforced
They had 21 turnovers – 12 steals = 9 unforced

Points per Takeover
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)
We had 15 points from 21 takeovers = 0.714 points/takeaway
They had 12 points from 14 takeovers = 0.857 points/takeaway

Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeover: [Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 26 points in 36 unsettled situations = 0.722 points
They had 21 points in 24 unsettled situations = 0.875 points

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 47 + 21 = 68
They had 44 + 14 = 58

Hustle Stats
One of the radio sponsors gives an award to the team that had the most “hustle stats”, which they define as rebounds + steals + blocks. I decided to keep track of that, too:
We had 47 + 12 + 1 = 60
They had 44 + 6 + 4= 54

Scoring

Shooting
(Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 20 for 40 on twos, (50.0%), 10 for 35 on threes (28.6%) and 15 for 21 on frees (71.4%)
They were 18 for 34 on twos, (52.9%), 13 for 37 on threes (35.1%) and 9 for 12 on frees (75.0%)
Combined percentages were: 1500 (500 + 286 + 714) vs. 1630 (529 + 351 + 750) = -130

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum”
POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made
OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots)
TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint)
FBP = fast break points
POTO= points off turnovers

We had 26 PIP, 44 POP, 30 OL, 14 TZ, 15 POTO, 29 FBP
They had 32 PIP, 43 POP, 39 OL, 4 TZ, 12 POTO, 22 FBP

Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 29 FBP in 45 opportunities (64.4%)
They scored 22 FBP in 44 opportunities (50.0%)

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 30 FCP and 11 SCP
They had 44 FCP and 9 SCP

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 66 points and our bench scored 19 points
Their starters scored 58 points and their bench scored 26 points

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 21 of our 30 field goals = 70.0%
They assisted 19 of their 31 field goals = 61.3%

Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 85 points in 85 possessions = 1.000 points/ possession
They scored 84 points in 86 possessions = 0.977 points/possession
It was a 171 possession game.

If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession:
We scored 85 points in 85 possessions = 1.000 points/ possession
They scored 84 points in 77 possessions = 1.091 points/possession

Team Shooting Efficiency

(Points minus missed field goals and free throws)

We scored 85 points, missed 35 field goals and missed 6 free throws = net +43
They scored 84 points, missed 40 field goals and missed 3 free throws = net +41
(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)

We scored 85 on 40 two point attempts, 35 three point attempts and 21 free throw attempts = 85 of a possible 206 points = 41.3% of possible points scored.
They scored 84 on 34 two point attempts, 37 three point attempts and 12 free throw attempts = 84 of a possible 191 points = 44.0% of possible points scored.

Fouls

(Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.)
We attempted 40 two point shots and were fouled 17 times = 2.35
They attempted 34 two point shots and were fouled 14 times = 2.43

Comments

- We had one blocked shot. Bryant had 4 of them.

- We had 26 points in the paint. Bryant had 32 pf them. So who was the bigger team?

- We were out-scored on our initial sets 30-44.

- There were 51 fast break points in this game. Basketball like it oughta be.

Loved the up and down pace of the first half especially!! Not sure we’re cut out to win that way, but it was still fun to see SU play that way again.

It might be the only way we can win until the defense gets straightened out.
