I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of each month. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.) This is limited to recruited scholarship players only.

Net Points
(points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls)

Average net points/40 by position, (based on averaging 20+ minutes per game), since the 1980-81 season:
Centers 18.6; Power Forwards: 18.4; Small Forwards: 16.1, Shooting Guards: 13.3; Point Guards: 13.5

Maliq Brown +16NP in 33 minutes = +183NP in 341 minutes = +21.5NP/40 for season
Symir Torrence +14NP in 15 minutes = +101NP in 263 minutes = +15.4NP/40 for season
Judah Mintz +14NP in 21 minutes = +247NP in 699 minutes = +14.1NP/40 for season
Jesse Edwards +8NP in 24 minutes = +427NP in 671 minutes = +25.5NP/40 for season

Judah Mintz 21 points – 7mfg – 4mft = +10

Scoring Efficiency
(Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points)
Malik Brown 11 points of 14 = 78.6%

(Who played the most minutes?)
Judah Mintz 35 minutes

TEAM STATS

Possession

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 6 of our 31 misses = 19.4%
They rebounded 12 of their 32 misses = 37.5%

Unsettled Situations
[Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 17 points in 21 unsettled situations = 0.810 points/situation
They had 33 points in 27 unsettled situations = 1.222 points/situation

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 26 + 15 = 41
They had 32 + 15 = 47

Scoring

Shooting
(Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 16 for 31 on twos, (51.6%), 7 for 18 on threes (38.9%) and 17 for 24 on frees (70.8%)
They were 19 for 28 on twos, (67.9%), 13 for 32 on threes (40.8%) and 8 for 15 on frees (53.3%)

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum”
POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made
OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots)
TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint)
FT = Free Throws

We had 26 PIP, 27 POP, 21 OL, 6 TZ, 17 FT
They had 34 PIP, 43 POP, 36 OL, 4 TZ, 8 FT

Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 4 FBP in 31 opportunities (12.9%)
They scored 6 FBP in 34 opportunities (17.6%)

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 46 FCP and 3 SCP
They had 62 FCP and 9 SCP

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 58 points and our bench scored 22 points.
Their starters scored 73 points and their bench scored 12 points.

Efficiency

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 13 of our 23 field goals = 56.5%
They assisted 26 of their 32 field goals = 81.3%

Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 70 points in 69 possessions = 1.014 points/ possession
They scored 85 points in 70 possessions = 1.167 points/possession
It was a 139-possession game.

If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession:
We scored 70 points in 60 possessions = 1.167 points/ possession
They scored 85 points in 67 possessions = 1.269 points/possession

Team Shooting Efficiency

(Points minus missed field goals and free throws)

We scored 70 points, missed 26 field goals and missed 7 free throws = net +37
They scored 85 points, missed 28 field goals and missed 7 free throws = net +50

(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)

We scored 70 on 31 two-point attempts, 18 three-point attempts and 24 free throw attempts = 70 of a possible 140 points = 50.0% of possible points scored.
They scored 85 on 28 two-point attempts, 32 three-point attempts and 15 free throw attempts = 85 of a possible 167 points = 50.9% of possible points scored.

Fouls

(Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.)
We attempted 31 two-point shots and were fouled 17 times = 1.82
They attempted 28 two-point shots and were fouled 16 times = 1.75

Comments:

- Someone was trying to float the notion that the problem in this game was that Jim Boeheim finally acceded to the demands of some of us that Malik Brown should replace Benny Williams in the starting line up and this disaster resulted from it. Statistically, Malik was our best player, (16NP to 14 for Judah while Benny was -2). And it worked in its intended impact: the game was 10-10 after 5 minutes and 17-21 after 10. We didn’t lose because of a bad start because there was none. The problems came after that and had little to do with Malik, who played well and was a key part of our press.

- Our press is designed to create unsettled situations to give us an alternative to getting bogged down in an unsuccessful half-court offense – and it did. The problem is, the Hokies scored far more points in those situations, (17-33), than we did.

- In the end, they didn’t out-shoot us from outside by a tremendous amount: 40.6% from three to our 38.9%. It’s what the 11 threes they made in the first half did to our internal defense: they shot 67.9%, (19 of 28) inside the arc.

- And, by out-rebounding us by 9, (26-37) while breaking even in turnovers, (15), even though we pressed for half the game and they didn’t, they got to take 11 more shots than we did (49-60), and the 11 more shots tended to be threes, (18-32).
