I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of each month. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.) This is limited to recruited scholarship players only.

Net Points
(points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls)

Average net points/40 by position, (based on averaging 20+ minutes per game), since the 1980-81 season:
Centers 18.6; Power Forwards: 18.4; Small Forwards: 16.1, Shooting Guards: 13.3; Point Guards: 13.5

Jesse Edwards +42NP in 40 minutes = +635NP in 1006 minutes = +25.2NP/40 for season
Maliq Brown +21NP in 32 minutes = +266NP in 580 minutes = +18.3NP/40 for season
Judah Mintz +10NP in 39 minutes = +379NP in 1035 minutes = +14.6NP/40 for season
Joe Girard +4NP in 39 minutes = +344NP in 1068 minutes = +12.9NP/40 for season
Symir Torrence 0NP in 2 minutes = +103NP in 324 minutes = +12.7NP/40 for season
Benny Williams -1NP in 8 minutes = +189NP in 632 minutes = +12.0NP/40 for season
Quadir Copeland -1NP in 12 minutes = +18NP in 170 minutes = +4.2NP/40 for season
Chris Bell -2NP in 28 minutes = +93NP in 576 minutes = +6.5NP/40 for season

DNP coach’s decision
John Bol Ajak 0NP in 0 minutes = +34NP in 122 minutes = +11.1NP/40 for season
Mounir Hima 0NP in 0 minutes = +51NP in 195 minutes = +10.5NP/40 for season
Justin Taylor 0NP in 0 minutes = +113NP in 485 minutes = +9.3NP/40 for season

Injured or ill and couldn’t play

Redshirting
Peter Carey 0NP in 0 minutes = -2NP in 20 minutes = -4.0NP/40 for season

Out for the year
None

Left Team

Awards

Offensive Dude of the Game, (O-Dog)
(Points plus assists)
Jesse Edwards 27 points and 0 assists = 27

Shooting Efficiency
(Points minus missed field goal and free throw attempts)
Jesse Edwards 27 points – 4mfg – 4mft = +18

Scoring Efficiency
(Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points)
Jesse Edwards 8 points of 12 = 67.7%

My Man
(Who played the most minutes?)
Jesse Edwards 40 minutes

TEAM STATS

Possession

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 16 of our 43 misses = 37.2%
They rebounded 9 of their 36 misses = 25.0%

Unsettled Situations
[Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 34 points in 32 unsettled situations = 1.0625 points/situation
They had 31 points in 23 unsettled situations = 1.348 points/situation

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 43 + 16 = 59
They had 36 + 14 = 50

Scoring

Shooting
(Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 25 for 50 on twos, (50.0%), 2 for 14 on threes (14.3%) and 16 for 24 on frees (66.7%)
They were 14 for 21 on twos, (66.7%), 10 for 39 on threes (25.6%) and 5 for 6 on frees (83.3%)

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum”
POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made
OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots)
TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint)
FT = Free Throws

We had 40 PIP, 16 POP, 6 OL, 10 TZ, 16 FT
They had 26 PIP, 32 POP, 30 OL, 2 TZ, 5 FT

Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 9 FBP in 44 opportunities (20.5%)
They scored 9 FBP in 36 opportunities (25.0%)

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 32 FCP and 15 SCP
They had 38 FCP and 11 SCP

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 63 points and our bench scored 9 points.
Their starters scored 50 points and their bench scored 13 points.

Efficiency

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 11 of our 27 field goals = 40.7%
They assisted 19 of their 24 field goals = 79.2%

Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 72 points in 75 possessions = 0.960 points/ possession
They scored 63 points in 70 possessions = 0.900 points/possession
It was a 145-possession game.

If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession:
We scored 72 points in 73 possessions = 0.986 points/ possession
They scored 63 points in 63 possessions = 1.000 points/possession

Team Shooting Efficiency

(Points minus missed field goals and free throws)

We scored 72 points, missed 37 field goals and missed 8 free throws = net +27
They scored 63 points, missed 36 field goals and missed 1 free throws = net +26

(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)

We scored 72 on 50 two-point attempts, 14 three-point attempts and 24 free throw attempts = 76 of a possible 166 points = 43.4% of possible points scored.
They scored 63 on 21 two-point attempts, 39 three-point attempts and 6 free throw attempts = 96 of a possible 165 points = 38.2% of possible points scored.

Fouls

(Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.)
We attempted 50 two-point shots and were fouled 19 times = 2.63
They attempted 21 two-point shots and were fouled 7 times = 3.00

Comments:

- My somewhat arbitrary standard for a player good enough to have a starting position is 10.0 NP/40. Our small forwards: Justin Taylor 9.3; Chris Bell 6.5; Quadir Copeland 4.2. That, more than anything else, is the story of this season.

- Bennie Williams went back to being Bennie Williams: from 20NP and 19NP to -1NP.

- A big reason we broke the four game winning streak was our rebounding. We won the boards for the first time in 6 games, (Florida State), 43-36. And we got 16 offensive rebounds. Jesse got 8 of his 20 rebounds on the offensive boards while Maliq got 4 of his 9 from there as well. Let’s see if that continues.

- But the biggest factor is that Wake went 10 for 39 from three instead of 18/40 as Georgia Tech did. And those 39 attempts had the same impact as the 40: Tech shot 63% inside the arc and Wake shot 66.7%. Duke shot 59%, Clemson 69% and Pitt 59%. If you have expand the zone to cover 40 threes, your interior defense is going to be Swiss Cheese. Florida State was also the last time we won this stat, which over the years has correlated to victory more than any other.

- Our own three-point shooting, which was pretty good, if less prolific against Duke, Clemson and Pitt, (22/50 = 44%), has fallen off to 6/31 (19.4%), further amplifying our deficit there. We’ve lost this stat ten times in a row, by a total of 159-363, a 20 point deficit per game.

- The last time we won the assist percentage battle was the second Notre Dame game, 14 games ago. But we drive to the basket rather than shoot treys, so….

- Giving up 63 is sure more fun than 90+
