Team Stats:
(I’ve decided to put the team that won the stat in bold and ties in italics.)

POSSESSION

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)

We rebounded 8 of our 35 misses = 22.9%

They rebounded 5 of their 32 misses = 15.6%

Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)

We got 7 points on 8 O-Rebs = 0.875 points/O-reb
They got 4 points on 5 O-Rebs = 0.800 points/ O-reb

Unforced Turnovers
(Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers)

We had 8 turnovers – 5 steals = 3 unforced
They had 14 turnovers – 8 steals = 6 unforced

Points per Takeaway
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)

We had 13 points from 14 takeaways = 0.929 points/takeaway
They had 13 points from 8 takeaways = 1.625 points/takeaway

Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeaway: [Second Chance Point + Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)

We had 20 points in 22 unsettled situations = 0.909 points
They had 17 points in 13 unsettled situations = 1.308 points

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)

We had 35 + 14 = 49
They had 32 + 8= 40

Scoring

Shooting
(shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)

We were 17 for 38 on twos, (44.7%), 6 for 12 on threes (50.0%) and 26 for 39 on frees (66.7%)
They were 14 for 32 on twos, (43.8%), 10 for 23 on threes (43.5%) and 12 for 14 on frees (85.7%)

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP –free throws made, TREY: points from three point shots, TZ= Twilight Zone, which is POP – TREY, two point jumpers from outside the paint, FBP = fast break points POTO= points off turnovers)

We had 30 PIP, 22 POP, 18 TREY, 4 TZ, 13 POTO, 4 FBP
They had 18 PIP, 40 POP, 30 TREY, 10 TZ, 13 POTO, 0 FBP

Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)

We scored 4 FBP in 39 opportunities (10.3%)
They scored 0 FBP in 34 opportunities (0.0%)

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)

We had 41 FCP and 7 SCP
They had 54 FCP and 4 SCP

Last Possessions
(Points scored on the last full possession of a half, a game or an overtime period.)

We scored 2 points
They scored 3 points

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)

Our starters scored 74 points and our bench scored 4 points
Their starters scored 45 points and their bench scored 25 points

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)

We assisted 16of our 23 field goals = 69.6%
They assisted 19 of their 24 field goals = 79.2%

Team Offensive Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)

We scored 78 points in 69 possessions = 1.130 points/ possession
They scored 70 points in 70 possessions = 1.000 points/possession
It was a 139 possession game. (We are averaging 132 a game in regulation.)

Breakdown by Quarters
(Points scored between the beginning of the game and the 10 minute mark of the first half, then halftime, then the 10 minute mark of the second half, the end of regulation and then overtime of there was one)

13-8, 18-13, 21-21, 26-28

Fouls
(Two point shots, points in paint and free throws attempted per times fouled.)

We attempted 40 two point shots, scored 30 points in the paint, attempted 29 free throws and were fouled 20 times = 1.46; 1.15; 1.50
They attempted 31 two point shots, scored 34 points in the paint, attempted 26 free throws and were fouled 19 times = 2.67; 1.50; 1.17
We were more likely to get calls when attempting two point shots and to be fouled scoring in the paint and we got more free throws out of it when fouled.

Comments:

- Tyus battle’s 31NP were the highest total by an SU player this season. When Tyus scored 37 vs. Florida State, he had only 18 nets points because of 16 missed FG and 5 turnovers. This was his greatest game.

- Did Frank Howard have a good game? He missed 9 of 12 field goals (1 for 8 inside the arc) and 6 of 10 free throws. Yet he had 9 assists, 1 turnover and 5 steals. He had 10NP -3 OE and +13FG. Is that a good game? I guess if you are a point guard, (as JB insists he is), it’s a good game because your floor game is going to be more important than your scoring.

- Offensive rebounds are getting hard to come by. In the last four games we have rebounded 33 of 127 misses (26.0%) while our opposition has grabbed 32 of 132 (24.2%)

- Incredibly, we shot a higher percentage on three point shots in this game: 6/12 vs. 10/23. That’s because they missed their first 10 treys until that 35 footer at the end of the half. From that point on, they were 10 of 13, including the last 7 in a row!

- The perception that we are inept on both offense and defense on last possessions of a half or game caused me to decide to keep track of how many points are scored on last full possessions, (defined as possession where a field goal or free throw was attempted or there was an offensive foul or turnover that prevented it: when you get a rebound and do nothing with it as at the end of today’s game, that’s not a true possession because you aren’t trying to score). I decided to include the end of OT periods. On the season we’ve scored 49 points on last possessions to 60 for the opposition. In victories it’s been 35-37, in losses 14-23. It’s not a large sample of the game but it can certainly matter.

- We could easily be devastated by foul trouble but it hasn’t happened yet. I wonder if the refs are aware of a team’s depth problems when they have an unusual number of injuries, defections or suspensions and tend to avoid blowing their whistle because they don’t want to destroy the troubled team’s chance to compete.
