Comments: - Tyus battle’s 31NP were the highest total by an SU player this season. When Tyus scored 37 vs. Florida State, he had only 18 nets points because of 16 missed FG and 5 turnovers. This was his greatest game. - Did Frank Howard have a good game? He missed 9 of 12 field goals (1 for 8 inside the arc) and 6 of 10 free throws. Yet he had 9 assists, 1 turnover and 5 steals. He had 10NP -3 OE and +13FG. Is that a good game? I guess if you are a point guard, (as JB insists he is), it’s a good game because your floor game is going to be more important than your scoring. - Offensive rebounds are getting hard to come by. In the last four games we have rebounded 33 of 127 misses (26.0%) while our opposition has grabbed 32 of 132 (24.2%) - Incredibly, we shot a higher percentage on three point shots in this game: 6/12 vs. 10/23. That’s because they missed their first 10 treys until that 35 footer at the end of the half. From that point on, they were 10 of 13, including the last 7 in a row! - The perception that we are inept on both offense and defense on last possessions of a half or game caused me to decide to keep track of how many points are scored on last full possessions, (defined as possession where a field goal or free throw was attempted or there was an offensive foul or turnover that prevented it: when you get a rebound and do nothing with it as at the end of today’s game, that’s not a true possession because you aren’t trying to score). I decided to include the end of OT periods. On the season we’ve scored 49 points on last possessions to 60 for the opposition. In victories it’s been 35-37, in losses 14-23. It’s not a large sample of the game but it can certainly matter. - We could easily be devastated by foul trouble but it hasn’t happened yet. I wonder if the refs are aware of a team’s depth problems when they have an unusual number of injuries, defections or suspensions and tend to avoid blowing their whistle because they don’t want to destroy the troubled team’s chance to compete.
