I’ve added so many things to my post-game “Net Points” posts over the years that it’s become a very long post to read and a longer one to do. I’ve decided to have separate posts for the numbers for a particular game and for the cumulative season totals. It’s the later that takes most of the time and lengthens the post so much. There was too much verbiage and too many numbers.

I’m still going to figure the season totals but I’ll post them at three different stages of the season: after the pre-conference schedule, after the conference schedule and after the post season. In the meantime, I’ll go with this stream-lined version of “Net Points, etc.” after each game, with numbers and commentary only for that game. That should make it both quicker to do and more digestible.

Team Stats:

POSSESSION

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 7 of our 33 misses = 21.2%
They rebounded 14 of their 32 misses = 43.75%

Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)
We got 8 points on 7 O-Rebs = 1.14 points
They got 18 points on 14 O-Rebs = 1.29 points

Turnovers
(Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers)
We had 10 turnovers – 4 steals = 6 unforced
They had 12 turnovers – 9 steals = 3 unforced

Points from Takeaways
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)
We had 9 points from 12 takeaways = 0.75 points
They had 10 points from 10 takeaways = 1.00 points

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 25 + 12 = 37
They had 40 + 10 = 50

Scoring

Shooting
(shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 15 for 32 on twos, (.469), 6 of 23 on threes (.261) and 12 for 13 on frees (.923)
They were 18 for 36 on twos, (.500), 11 for 23 on threes (.473) and 8 for 16 on frees (.500)

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP –free throws made, TREY: points from three point shots, TZ= Twilight Zone, which is POP – TREY, two point jumpers from outside the paint, FBP = fast break points TOP= points off turnovers)
We had 22 PIP, 26 POP, 18 TREY, 8 TZ, 2 FBP, 9 TOP
They had 28 PIP, 41 POP, 33 TREY, 8 TZ, 2 FBP, 10TOP

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made, courtesy of Pat. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 38 FCP and 8 SCP
They had 49 FCP and 18 SCP

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 42 points and our bench scored 18 points
Their starters scored 71 points and their bench scored 6 points

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 9 of our 21 field goals, 42.9%
They assisted 21 of their 29 field goals 72.4%

Team Offensive Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 60 points in 64 possessions = 0.9375 points/possession
They scored 77 points in 65 possessions = 1.185 points/ possession
It was a 129 possession game

Breakdown by Quarters
(Points scored between the beginning of the game and the 10 minute mark of the first half, then halftime, then the 10 minute mark of the second half, the end of regulation and then overtime of there was one)
14-28. 25-15, 8-19, 13-15

FOULS
(Two point shots, points in paint and free throws attempted per times fouled.)
We attempted 32 two point shots, scored 22 points in the paint, attempted 13 free throws and were fouled 14 times = 2.29, 1.57, 0.93
They attempted 36 two point shots, scored 28 points in the paint, attempted 16 free throws and were fouled 18 times = 2.00, 1.56, 0.89

Comments:

- I’ll make a few comparisons these last two games which were similarly dismal but not necessarily for the same reasons.

- We’ve rebounded 16 of our 69 misses in the two games, only 23%.

- Wisconsin had 28 second chance points + points off turnovers. We had only 17. Vs. South Carolina it was 21-20 in our favor.

- “Manufactured possessions” were 82-104 in the two games.

- Our points in the paint, surprisingly, were much more competitive vs. Wisconsin, (22-28) that it had been vs. South Carolina (8-30). Our shooting from two point range improved from .276-.469.

- But our three point shooting declined from .400 to .261 while Wisconsin shot .473 compared to South Carolina’s .308.

- We had 26 POP in both games but gave up 20 to South Carolina and then 41 to Wisconsin.

- We lost both first chance points 38-49 and second chance points 8-18 to Wisconsin, a bad combination.

- We won bench points 18-6 but lost starters points 41-71 so it didn’t mean much.

- The first ten minutes of each half we were out-scored 22-47. We won the second ten minutes 38-30 but it was too little, too late.
