I’ve added so many things to my post-game “Net Points” posts over the years that it’s become a very long post to read and a longer one to do. I’ve decided to have separate posts for the numbers for a particular game and for the cumulative season totals. It’s the later that takes most of the time and lengthens the post so much. There was too much verbiage and too many numbers.
I’m still going to figure the season totals but I’ll post them at three different stages of the season: after the pre-conference schedule, after the conference schedule and after the post season. In the meantime, I’ll go with this stream-lined version of “Net Points, etc.” after each game, with numbers and commentary only for that game. That should make it both quicker to do and more digestible.

Team Stats:
POSSESSION
Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 11 of 29 misses = 39.9%
They rebounded 12 of their 32 misses = 37.5%
Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)
We got 12 points on 11 O-Rebs = 1.1 points
They got 13 points on 12 O-Rebs = 1.1 points
Turnovers
(Total turnovers – steals = unforced turnovers)
We had 13 turnovers – 9 steals = 4 unforced
They had 11 turnovers -8 steals = 3 unforced
Points from Turnovers
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)
We had 11 points from 11 turnovers = 1.0 points
They had 16 points from 13 turnovers = 1.2 points
Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 31 + 11 = 42
They had 30 + 13 = 43
SCORING
Shooting
(shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 15 for 34 on twos, (.441), 10 for 19 on threes (.526) and 11 for 15 on frees (.733)
They were 19 for 36 on twos (.528), 8 for 20 on threes (.400) and 10 for 16 on frees (.625)
Points
(PIP= points in the paint, POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP –free throws made, TREY: points from three point shots, TZ= Twilight Zone, which is POP – TREY, two point jumpers from outside the paint, FBP = fast break points)
We had 24 PIP, 36 POP, 30 TREY, 6 TZ, 4 FBP
They had 28 PIP, 34 POP, 24 TREY, 10 TZ, 8 FBP
First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made, courtesy of Pat. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 44 FCP and 12 SCP
They had 41 FCP and 13 SCP
Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 61 points and our bench scored 10 points
Their starter scored 33 points and their bench scored 39 points
Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 16 of our 25 field goals, 64.0%
They assisted 14 of their 27 field goals 51.9%
Team Offensive Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 71 points in 62 possessions = 1.15 points/possession
They scored 72 points in 63 possessions = 1.14 points/ possession
It was a 135 possession game
Breakdown by Quarters
(Points scored between the beginning of the game and the 10 minute mark of the first half, then halftime, then the 10 minute mark of the second half, the end of regulation and then overtime of there was one)
13-8, 16-23, 15-20, 27-19
FOULS
(Two point shots, points in paint and free throws attempted per times fouled.)
We attempted 34 two point shots, scored 24 points in the paint, attempted 15 free throws and were fouled 15 times = 2.3, 1.6, 1.0
They attempted 36 two point shots, scored 28 points in the paint, attempted 15 free throws and were fouled 15 times = 2.4, 1.9, 1.1
Comments:
- I’ve been computing offensive efficiency since the late 200’s and this is the first game I’ve ever seen where the losing team averaged more points per possession than the winners. Of course the possession are an approximation using the formula and both points and possessions were off by just one, with the possessions rounded off.
- All of our players wound up with positive net points for the first time in 6 games.
- We out-rebounded a team that had collared 86 of the 129 rebounds in the first two games against us.
- They were +5 in points off turnovers in a game they won by a single point and scored more points per turnover. We didn’t get back as well as they did.
- We remain 13-0 in games where out-shot the other team inside the arc and are now 6-13 in games where we did not. We out-shot them from three and from the line but it wasn’t enough.
- We get out-scored from the bench regularly but by an average of 8 points on the season. We out-scored Pitt from the bench in the second game and NC State, too. The last three games we’ve been out-scored from the bench by a whopping 42-144.
