I’ve added so many things to my post-game “Net Points” posts over the years that it’s become a very long post to read and a longer one to do. I’ve decided to have separate posts for the numbers for a particular game and for the cumulative season totals. It’s the later that takes most of the time and lengthens the post so much. There was too much verbiage and too many numbers.
I’m still going to figure the season totals but I’ll post them at three different stages of the season: after the pre-conference schedule, after the conference schedule and after the post season. In the meantime, I’ll go with this stream-lined version of “Net Points, etc.” after each game, with numbers and commentary only for that game. That should make it both quicker to do and more digestible.

Team Stats:
POSSESSION
Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 8 of our 25 misses = 32.0%
They rebounded 18 of their 47 misses = 34.0%
Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)
We got 8 points on 8 O-Rebs = 1.0 points
They got 12 points on 18 O-Rebs =0.7 points
Turnovers
(Total turnovers – steals = unforced turnovers)
We had 10 turnovers – 4 steals = 6 unforced
They had 10 turnovers - 6 steals = 4 unforced
Points from Turnovers
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)
We had 4 points from 10 turnovers = 0.4 points
They had 9 points from 10 turnovers = 0.9 points
Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 37 + 10 = 47
They had 35 + 10 = 45
SCORING
Shooting
(shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 19 for 29 on twos, (.655), 8 of 20 on threes (.400) and 13 for22 on frees (.591)
They were 11 for 40 on twos (.275), 8 for 24 on threes (.333) and 4 for 8 on frees (.500)
Points
(PIP= points in the paint, POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP –free throws made, TREY: points from three point shots, TZ= Twilight Zone, which is POP – TREY, two point jumpers from outside the paint, FBP = fast break points)
We had 28 PIP, 34 POP, 24 TREY, 10 TZ, 4 FBP
They had 20 PIP, 26 POP, 24 TREY, 2 TZ, 2 FBP
First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made, courtesy of Pat. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 50 FCP and 8 SCP
They had 32 FCP and 12 SCP
Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 59 points and our bench scored 16 points
Their starters scored 31 points and their bench scored 19 points
Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 14 of our 27 field goals, 51.9%
They assisted 8 of their 19 field goals 42.1%
Team Offensive Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 75 points in 61 possessions = 1.23 points/possession
They scored 50 points in 60 possessions = 0.83 points/ possession
It was a 121 possession game
Breakdown by Quarters
(Points scored between the beginning of the game and the 10 minute mark of the first half, then halftime, then the 10 minute mark of the second half, the end of regulation and then overtime of there was one)
22-12, 9-15, 21-14, 23-9
FOULS
(Two point shots, points in paint and free throws attempted per times fouled.)
We attempted 29 two point shots, scored 28 points in the paint, attempted 22 free throws and were fouled 15 times = 1.9, 1.9, 1.5
They attempted 40 two point shots, scored 20 points in the paint, attempted 8 free throws and were fouled 9 times = 4.4, 2.2, 0.9
Comments:
- We beat this team on two point shooting, (.655 to .275). We also shot a better percentage form three but hit the same number of three pointers, (8). We got to the line more and got more free throws but that just added to the margin.
- Michael Gbinije returned to the fore with one of his best games after being held in check by Dayton, who knew to give him special attention. He was 10 for 14 from the field amnd made all 7 of his two point shots. It’s amazing he only got to the line twice, (and missed both). Othersie he might have had a 30 point game.
- One of our problems have been that we have too many of what Dick Vitale called “Dow Jonesers”, whose performance is always up and down. Malachi Richardson is our biggest Dow Jones and he has an unproductive game , (zero net points) and his big game vs. Dayton. But our other key players all had good games, some of them better than good, (24, 19, 18, 16, 11), and we won by 25 points.
- We’ve out-scored Dayton and Middle Tennessee State by 39-19 in the third quarter of the game.
- The numbers on fouls are interesting. We attempted 29 two point shots and got fouled 15 times. They attempted 40 two point shots and got fouled 9 times. That seems out of whack. I guess it just means that when you play good defense, (they only made 11 of those 40 two pint shots), you avoid fouling.
