Take all the positives: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks and subtract the negatives: missed field goals, miss free throws, turnovers and fouls. The result is “Net Points.” (NP). M = minutes.

Scoop Jardine +15NP in 26M season: +90NP in 186M per 40M: +19.4NP
Kris Joseph +14NP in 34M season: +120NP in 260M per 40M: +18.5NP
Dion Waiters +13NP in 22M season: +85NP in 193M per 40M: +17.6NP
Fab Melo +8NP in 26M season: +67NP in 202M per 40M: +13.3NP
Michael Carter-Williams +7NP in 12M season: +33NP in 105M per 40M: +12.6NP
James Southerland +6NP in 18M season: +103NP in 144M per 40M: +28.6NP
Brandon Triche +4NP in 20M season: +85NP in 208M per 40M: +16.3NP
Rakeem Christmas +1NP in 11M season: +33NP in 117M per 40M: +11.3NP
Baye Moussa Keita 0NP in 11M season: +40NP in 107M per 40M: +15.0NP
CJ Fair -5NP in 20M season: +83NP in 220M per 40M: +15.1NP
Mookie Jones 0NP in 0M season: 0NP in 26M per 40M: 0.0NP

Comment: CJ Fair had perhaps the worst game of his career and Baye Moussa Keita seems to be struggling at this point. But we’ve got ten guys who can play so we can have a couple guys have bad games and still win.

Shooting Breakdown: SU was 19/42 from inside the arc, (.452-we are.528 for the season), 3/11 from outside, (.273) and 15/23 from the line (.652). Marshall was 17/41 (.415), 5/24, (.208). and 7/10, (.700) 12 of our 22 baskets were assisted, (55%), vs. 115 of Marshall’s 22, (50%).

Rebounding: Syracuse had 8 offensive and 25 defensive rebounds. Marshall had 20 offensive and 26 defensive rebounds. That means that when we missed, we got the rebound 24% of the time. When they missed, they got the rebound 44% of the time. Marshall had 19 turnovers, of which 12 were Syracuse steals, (63%). Syracuse had 12 turnovers of which 5 were Marshall steals, (427%). We had 52 “manufactured” possessions, (our rebounds + their turnovers). They had 58. This was the first game all year in which we’ve lost that battle.

And, thanks to Blacksquirrels and Knicks411, I now understand how to compute “points per possession, (field goal attempts – offensive rebounds + turnovers plus 47.5% of free throws attempted) and here they are:

Syracuse: 53 FGA minus 8 offensive rebounds plus 12 turnovers plus 47.5% of 23 free throws = 67.925 possessions. The possessions can’t be more than one off so I’ll call that 68 possessions in which we scored 62 points or 0.912 points per possession. For the season it’s 1.151.

Marshall: 65-20+19 plus 47.5% of 10= 68.75 possessions. Let’s call that 69 possessions, (so we won’t be more than one off) in which they scored 56 points or 0.812 points per possession. For the season it’s 0.844.

Dry stretches were a problem last year- we’d go 8-10 minutes with the offense not functioning. I decided it should be a goal to score at least 15 points in every 10 minute “quarter” of the game, (college is the only level that doesn’t have quarters). You want to score more than that, of course, but if we can avoid falling under 15 in any ten minute period we should have a good scoring average because we’ll have 20 and 25 point quarters as well. The “quarterly” splits in this game were 14-8, 17-10, 13-10, 18-28. We’ve had 5 sub 15 point quarters this year and lost six quarters (of 36).

9-0 and 22 to go

LET’S GO ORANGE!!!
