Take all the positives: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks and subtract the negatives: missed field goals, miss free throws, turnovers and fouls. The result is “Net Points.” (NP). M = minutes. James Southerland +19NP in 22M season: +139NP in 211M per 40M: +26.4NP Brandon Triche +11NP in 18M season: +112NP in 279M per 40M: +16.1NP Kris Joseph +11NP in 28M season: +179NP in 376M per 40M: +19.0NP Dion Waiters +10NP in 24M season: +145NP in 280M per 40M: +20.7NP Scoop Jardine +9NP in 16M season: +140NP in 278M per 40M: +20.1NP Michael Carter-Williams +7NP in 18M season: +59NP in 165M per 40M: +14.3NP Baye Moussa Keita +6NP in 11M season: +57NP in 157M per 40M: +14.5NP Fab Melo +3NP in 20M season: +101NP in 296M per 40M: +13.6NP Rakeem Christmas +3NP in 15M season: +52NP in 168M per 40M: +12.4NP CJ Fair +2NP in 18M season: +111NP in 306M per 40M: +14.5NP Mookie Jones 0NP in 0M season: 0NP in 26M per 40M: 0.0NP Comment: The season is progressing and James Southerland’s numbers aren’t deflating. Is he the best player on the team? I don’t know but he’s averaging 21 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals, 2 blocks, 6 missed field goals, 1 miss free throw, 1 turnover and 1 foul per 40 minutes of ply. Make what you want of that. Why is he always listed at the bottom of the box score, even below the walk-ons? Shooting Breakdown: SU was 16/30 from inside the arc, (.533), 10/21 from outside, (.476) and 18/22 from the line (.818). George Washington was 10/34 (.294), 7/16, (.438). and 20/30, (.667) 16 of our 26 baskets were assisted, (62%), vs. 8 of Tulane’s 17, (47%). Rebounding: Syracuse had 9 offensive and 19 defensive rebounds. Tulane had 15 offensive and 14 defensive rebounds. That means that when we missed, we got the rebound 38% of the time. When they missed, they got the rebound 44% of the time. Tulane had 11 turnovers, of which 7 were Syracuse steals, (64%). Syracuse had 7 turnovers of which 3 were Tulane steals, (43%). We had 39 “manufactured” possessions, (our rebounds + their turnovers). They had 36. And, thanks to Blacksquirrels and Knicks411, I now understand how to compute “points per possession, (field goal attempts – offensive rebounds + turnovers plus 47.5% of free throws attempted) and here they are: Syracuse: 51 FGA minus 9 offensive rebounds plus 7 turnovers plus 47.5% of 22 free throws = 59.456 possessions. The possessions can’t be more than one off so I’ll call that 59 possessions in which we scored 80 points or 1.356 points per possession. For the season it’s 1.192. Tulane: 50-15+11 plus 47.5% of 30 = 60.250 possessions. Let’s call that 60 possessions, (so we won’t be more than one off) in which they scored 61 points or 1.017 points per possession. For the season it’s 0.872. Dry stretches were a problem last year- we’d go 8-10 minutes with the offense not functioning. I decided it should be a goal to score at least 15 points in every 10 minute “quarter” of the game, (college is the only level that doesn’t have quarters). You want to score more than that, of course, but if we can avoid falling under 15 in any ten minute period we should have a good scoring average because we’ll have 20 and 25 point quarters as well. The “quarterly” splits in this game were 16-14, 25-5, 15-20, 24-22. We’ve had 6 sub 15 point quarters this year and lost 10 quarters (of 52). 13-0 and 18 to go LET’S GO ORANGE!!!
