Take all the positives: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks and subtract the negatives: missed field goals, miss free throws, turnovers and fouls. The result is “Net Points.” (NP). M = minutes. Fab Melo +25NP in 25M season: +126NP in 321M per 40M: +15.7NP Dion Waiters +16NP in 19M season: +161NP in 299M per 40M: +21.5NP CJ Fair +13NP in 28M season: +124NP in 334M per 40M: +14.9NP Brandon Triche +12NP in 24M season: +124NP in 303M per 40M: +16.4NP James Southerland +8NP in 17M season: +147NP in 228M per 40M: +25.8NP Scoop Jardine +8NP in 20M season: +148NP in 298M per 40M: +19.9NP Michael Carter-Williams +6NP in 11M season: +65NP in 176M per 40M: +14.8NP Rakeem Christmas +6NP in 11M season: +58NP in 179M per 40M: +13.0NP Baye Moussa Keita +4NP in 9M season: +61NP in 166M per 40M: +14.7NP Kris Joseph +3NP in 26M season: +182NP in 402M per 40M: +18.1NP Mookie Jones -1NP in 4M season: -1NP in 30M per 40M: -1.3NP Comment: We are well into the seasons and have played quality opposition and I’ve never seen an SU team where 10 guys are averaging 13.0NP per 40 minutes until this team. Maybe it could be eleven: Mookie averaged 16.3NP per 40 in his career prior to this year. It was in limited minutes but not as limited as this year. He just seems not to care any more. Shooting Breakdown: SU was 29/54 from inside the arc, (.537), 2/13 from outside, (.154) and 11/16 from the line (.688). Seton Hall was 12/39 (.308), 7/21, (.333). and 4/11, (.364) 20 of our 31 baskets were assisted, (65%), vs. 12 of Seton Hall’s 31, (39%). Rebounding: Syracuse had 17 offensive and 22 defensive rebounds. Seton Hall had 22 offensive and 23 defensive rebounds. That means that when we missed, we got the rebound 43% of the time. When they missed, they got the rebound 50% of the time. Seton Hall had 23 turnovers, of which 17 were Syracuse steals, (74%). Syracuse had 7 turnovers of which 1 was a Seton Hall steal, (14%). We had 62 “manufactured” possessions, (our rebounds + their turnovers). They had 52. And, thanks to Blacksquirrels and Knicks411, I now understand how to compute “points per possession, (field goal attempts – offensive rebounds + turnovers plus 47.5% of free throws attempted) and here they are: Syracuse: 67 FGA minus 17 offensive rebounds plus 7 turnovers plus 47.5% of 16 free throws = 64.6 possessions. The possessions can’t be more than one off so I’ll call that 65 possessions in which we scored 75 points or 1.154 points per possession. For the season it’s 1.189. Seton Hall: 60-22+23 plus 47.5% of 11 = 66.225 possessions. Let’s call that 66 possessions, (so we won’t be more than one off) in which they scored 49 points or 0.742 points per possession. For the season it’s 0.863. Dry stretches were a problem last year- we’d go 8-10 minutes with the offense not functioning. I decided it should be a goal to score at least 15 points in every 10 minute “quarter” of the game, (college is the only level that doesn’t have quarters). You want to score more than that, of course, but if we can avoid falling under 15 in any ten minute period we should have a good scoring average because we’ll have 20 and 25 point quarters as well. The “quarterly” splits in this game were 16-8, 18-7, 20-15, 21-19. We’ve had 6 sub 15 point quarters this year and lost 10 quarters (of 56). 14-0 and 17 to go LET’S GO ORANGE!!!
