Take all the positives: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks and subtract the negatives: missed field goals, miss free throws, turnovers and fouls. The result is “Net Points.” (NP). M = minutes.

Brandon Triche +17NP in 23M season: +148NP in 346M per 40M: +17.1NP
Scoop Jardine +17NP in 25M season: +171NP in 345M per 40M: +19.8NP
Dion Waiters +14NP in 28M season: +185NP in 347M per 40M: +21.3NP
Kris Joseph +9NP in 32M season: +209NP in 465M per 40M: +18.0NP
CJ Fair +9NP in 38M season: +158NP in 400M per 40M: +15.8NP
Fab Melo +8NP in 22M season: +156NP in 365M per 40M: +17.1NP
Michael Carter-Williams +7NP in 4M season: +73NP in 197M per 40M: +14.8NP
James Southerland +5NP in 12M season: +160NP in 257M per 40M: +24.9NP
Rakeem Christmas -1NP in 16M season: +53NP in 205M per 40M: +10.3NP
Baye Moussa Keita 0NP in 0M season: +63NP in 172M per 40M: +14.7NP
Mookie Jones 0NP in 0M season: +2NP in 30M per 40M: +2.7NP

Comment: 7NP in 4 minutes is a pretty good rate for MCW. Fab, Kris and CJ were important but it was the guards who carried us to this victory.

Shooting Breakdown: SU was 23/37 from inside the arc, (.622), 10/17 from outside, (.588) and 11/16 from the line (.688). Providence was 17/34 (.500), 6/13, (.462). and 21/28, (.750) 20 of our 33 baskets were assisted, (61%), vs. 13 of Providence’s 23, (57%).

Rebounding: Syracuse had 6 offensive and 16 defensive rebounds. Providence had 10 offensive and 16 defensive rebounds. That means that when we missed, we got the rebound 27% of the time. When they missed, they got the rebound 38% of the time. Providence had 13 turnovers, of which 5 were Syracuse steals, (38%). Syracuse had 8 turnovers of which 4 were Providence steals, (50%). We had 35 “manufactured” possessions, (our rebounds + their turnovers). They had 34.

And, thanks to Blacksquirrels and Knicks411, I now understand how to compute “points per possession, (field goal attempts – offensive rebounds + turnovers plus 47.5% of free throws attempted) and here they are:

Syracuse: 54 FGA minus 6 offensive rebounds plus 8 turnovers plus 47.5% of 16 free throws = 63.6 possessions. The possessions can’t be more than one off so I’ll call that 64 possessions in which we scored 87 points or 1.359 points per possession. For the season it’s 1.197.

Providence: 47-10+13 plus 47.5% of 28 = 63.3 possessions. Let’s call that 63 possessions, (so we won’t be more than one off) in which they scored 73 points or 1.159 points per possession. For the season it’s 0.882.

Dry stretches were a problem last year- we’d go 8-10 minutes with the offense not functioning. I decided it should be a goal to score at least 15 points in every 10 minute “quarter” of the game, (college is the only level that doesn’t have quarters). You want to score more than that, of course, but if we can avoid falling under 15 in any ten minute period we should have a good scoring average because we’ll have 20 and 25 point quarters as well. The “quarterly” splits in this game were 19-16, 17-18, 26-18, 25-21. We’ve had 6 sub 15 point quarters this year and lost 12 quarters (of 64).

16-0 and 15 to go (we’re halfway there- but that was the easy half)

LET’S GO ORANGE!!!
