Take all the positives: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks and subtract the negatives: missed field goals, miss free throws, turnovers and fouls. The result is “Net Points.” (NP). M = minutes. Dion Waiters +20NP in 27M season: +222NP in 402M per 40M: +22.1NP James Southerland +11NP in 19M season: +172NP in 285M per 40M: +24.1NP Baye Moussa Keita +9NP in 19M season: +79NP in 211M per 40M: +15.0NP Scoop Jardine +8NP in 21M season: +173NP in 390M per 40M: +17.7NP Rakeem Christmas +7NP in 8M season: +57NP in 218M per 40M: +10.6NP CJ Fair +6NP in 22M season: +173NP in 452M per 40M: +15.3NP Fab Melo +4NP in 18M season: +165NP in 401M per 40M: +16.5NP Brandon Triche +4NP in 22M season: +170NP in 396M per 40M: +17.2NP Kris Joseph +3NP in 30M season: +232NP in 533M per 40M: +17.4NP Michael Carter-Williams +2NP in 11M season: +75NP in 208M per 40M: +14.4NP Mookie Jones 0NP in 0M season: +2NP in 30M per 40M: +2.7NP Comment: I did an earlier post on which players from past years would get the “My Man” award for the guy Jim Boeheim wants on the court the most- the player who plays the most minutes. It’s not always the team’s most obvious star. Kris Joseph is ahead in the “My Man” sweepstakes this year but look who is in second place. Jim doesn’t want to do with CJ Fair any more than he ahs to, either, a dependence that only figures to grow. Meanwhile this team ahs 8 players averaging 15 net points per 40 minutes and another at 14.4. The 2005-2006 tam was led in NP per 40 by Terrance Roberts with 14.5, (GMAC was 14.2). He would be 9th on this team. Shooting Breakdown: SU was 23/44 from inside the arc, (.523), 5/18 from outside, (.278) and 18/25 from the line (.720). Providence was 14/41 (.341), 6/20, (.300). and 20/28, (.714) 15 of our 28 baskets were assisted, (54%), vs. 13 of Villanova’s 20, (65%). Rebounding: Syracuse had 14 offensive and 26 defensive rebounds. Villanova had 12 offensive and 24 defensive rebounds. That means that when we missed, we got the rebound 37% of the time. When they missed, they got the rebound 32% of the time. Villanova had 14 turnovers, of which 6 were Syracuse steals, (43%). Syracuse had 13 turnovers of which 4 were Villanova steals, (31%). We had 54 “manufactured” possessions, (our rebounds + their turnovers). They had 49. And, thanks to Blacksquirrels and Knicks411, I now understand how to compute “points per possession, (field goal attempts – offensive rebounds + turnovers plus 47.5% of free throws attempted) and here they are: Syracuse: 63 FGA minus 14 offensive rebounds plus 13 turnovers plus 47.5% of 25 free throws = 73.875 possessions. The possessions can’t be more than one off so I’ll call that 75 possessions in which we scored 79 points or 1.053 points per possession. For the season it’s 1.177 . Villanova: 61-12+14 plus 47.5% of 28 = 76.3 possessions. Let’s call that 76 possessions, (so we won’t be more than one off) in which they scored 66 points or 0.868 points per possession. For the season it’s 0.882 . Dry stretches were a problem last year- we’d go 8-10 minutes with the offense not functioning. I decided it should be a goal to score at least 15 points in every 10 minute “quarter” of the game, (college is the only level that doesn’t have quarters). You want to score more than that, of course, but if we can avoid falling under 15 in any ten minute period we should have a good scoring average because we’ll have 20 and 25 point quarters as well. The “quarterly” splits in this game were 16-14, 19-10, 11-17, 25-25. We’ve had 8 sub 15 point quarters this year and lost 15 quarters (of 72). We’ve lost 7 third quarters all in the last 11 games: Florida 14-14, 17-13, 13-17, 28-24 Marshall 14-8, 17-10, 13-10, 18-28 G Washington 26-12, 19-13, 20-13, 20-12 NC State 17-24, 30-9, 16-25, 25-14 Bucknell 19-8, 20-14, 18-20, 23-19 Tulane 16-14, 25-5, 15-20, 24-22 Seton Hall 16-8, 18-7, 20-15, 21-19 DePaul 22-15, 23-11, 16-17, 26-25 Providence 19-16, 17-18, 26-18, 25-21 Marquette 18-12, 19-7, 14-23, 22-24 Villanova 16-14, 19-10, 11-17, 25-25 18-0 and 13 to go LET’S GO ORANGE!!!
