Take all the positives: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks and subtract the negatives: missed field goals, miss free throws, turnovers and fouls. The result is “Net Points.” (NP). M = minutes.

Comment: Scoop loves to play against the Friars. He had 35NP in 42 minutes in the two games, including 20 points, 20 assists and 1 turnover. We had a Mookie sighting and this time he came to play, scoring 10 points in 8 minutes. It was the old Mookie, not the guy who had gone 3 for 16 in his prior games. His NP per 40 rose from 2.7 to 12.6 in one game. Now every scholarship player is averaging at least 12.6NP per 40, with is incredible.
I’ve got the numbers dating back to 1983-84 and this is the number of players averaging 10NP per 40 minutes or more for each team, (the team is designated by the year in which the championship is decided: 1983-84 is “1984“):
9- 1995, 2000, 2011
8- 2002, 2010
7- 1984, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1993, 2003, 2006, 2008, 2009
6- 1986, 1991, 1994, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2004, 2005
5- 1985, 1990, 1998, 2007
4- 2001
3- 1992
The other years when we were ranked #1 were 1988, when we had seven 10NP players, 1990, when we had five and 2010 when we had eight. We won the national championship with eight. This year we have eleven.
Shooting Breakdown: SU was 25/49 from inside the arc, (.510), 5/20 from outside, (.250) and 13/18 from the line (.722). Providence was 17/43 (.395), 3/14, (.214). and 12/15, (.800) 23 of our 30 baskets were assisted, (77%), vs. 11 of Providence’s 20, (56%).
Rebounding: Syracuse had 16 offensive and 23 defensive rebounds. Providence had 17 offensive and 26 defensive rebounds. That means that when we missed, we got the rebound 38% of the time. When they missed, they got the rebound 42.5% of the time. Providence had 22 turnovers, of which 12 were Syracuse steals, (54.5%). Syracuse had 8 turnovers of which 7 were Providence steals, (87.5%). We had 61 “manufactured” possessions, (our rebounds + their turnovers). They had 51.
And, thanks to Blacksquirrels and Knicks411, I now understand how to compute “points per possession, (field goal attempts – offensive rebounds + turnovers plus 47.5% of free throws attempted) and here they are:
Syracuse: 69 FGA minus 16 offensive rebounds plus 8 turnovers plus 47.5% of 18 free throws = 69.55 possessions. The possessions can’t be more than one off so I’ll call that 70 possessions in which we scored 78 points or 1.114 points per possession. For the season it’s 1.174 .
Providence: 57-17+22 plus 47.5% of 15 = 69.125 possessions. Let’s call that 69 possessions, (so we won’t be more than one off) in which they scored 55 points or 0.797 points per possession. For the season it’s 0.877 .
Dry stretches were a problem last year- we’d go 8-10 minutes with the offense not functioning. I decided it should be a goal to score at least 15 points in every 10 minute “quarter” of the game, (college is the only level that doesn’t have quarters). You want to score more than that, of course, but if we can avoid falling under 15 in any ten minute period we should have a good scoring average because we’ll have 20 and 25 point quarters as well. The “quarterly” splits in this game were 12-12, 26-9, 20-11, 20-23. We’ve had 9 sub 15 point quarters this year and lost 16 quarters (of 76).
