Take all the positives: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks and subtract the negatives: missed field goals, miss free throws, turnovers and fouls. The result is “Net Points.” (NP). M = minutes.
Scoop Jardine +19NP in 37M season: +210NP in 444M per 40M: +18.9NP
Brandon Triche +14NP in 19M season: +187NP in 431M per 40M: +17.4NP
Fab Melo +13NP in 29M season: +184NP in 449M per 40M: +16.4NP
Dion Waiters +11NP in 24M season: +242NP in 448M per 40M: +21.6NP
CJ Fair +11NP in 28M season: +199NP in 509M per 40M: +15.6NP
Kris Joseph +9NP in 34M season: +254NP in 590M per 40M: +17.2NP
Rakeem Christmas +1NP in 7M season: +79NP in 241M per 40M: +13.1NP
Baye Moussa Keita 0NP in 10M season: +84NP in 234M per 40M: +14.4NP
James Southerland -1NP in 11M season: +167NP in 316M per 40M: +21.1NP
Michael Carter-Williams -2NP in 1M season: +80NP in 226M per 40M: +14.2NP
Mookie Jones 0NP in 0M season: +12NP in 38M per 40M: +12.6NP
Comment. Dian Waiters has finally passed James Southerland in NP per 40, James having least the lead set up by some statistically amazing performances against lesser teams early in the season. James played well vs. Villanova, (11NP in 19 minutes) but in the Marquette, second providence and Pittsburgh games he has a total of -4 NP in exactly 40 minutes of play.
Offensive Dude of the Game: Hubert Davis said that we had plenty of balance and depth but that we needed an “Offensive dude, who can create his own shot and set up opportunities for his teammates.” Brent Axe invited me to call in after each game and announce who the “Offensive Dude of the Game” was. Based on what Hubert said, I felt that we needed a hockey concept here: points + assists. I couldn’t decide whether I should just report the totals or do it on a per minute basis, so I decided to do both. Here are the ODOG’s (It’s better with the “O” but without the “T”) for our 20 games so far this year:
(points/assists in minutes and average. If the same player led per 40 minutes there is no second player listing. I’m going to limit the per 40 minutes players to guys who played at least 10 minutes.)
Fordham Kris Joseph 16/1 = 17 in 27 (25.2) Brandon Triche 9/3 in 16 = 30.0
Manhattan Dion Waiters 17/5 = 22 in 19 (46.3)
Albany Kris Joseph 19/0 = 19 in 25 (30.4) and James Southerland 19/0 = 19 in 23 (33.0) Baye Moussa Keita 14/0 in 14 = 40.0 (Yes, our three leading scorers in this game had no assists between them, even though the team had 22: the guys who were being guarded got the ball to the guys who weren‘t.)
Colgate Dion Waiters 16/2 = 18 in 26 (27.7) Scoop Jardine 11/6 in 16 = 42.5
Virginia Tech Brandon Triche 18/6 = 24 in 34 (28.2)
Stanford Kris Joseph 18/2 = 20 in 36 (22.2) Scoop Jardine 14/3 in 27 = (25.2)
E. Michigan James Southerland 19/0 = 19 in 19 (40.0)
Florida Brandon Triche 20/3 = 23 in 35 (26.3) and Scoop Jardine 16/7 = 23 in 31 (29.7)
Marshall Dion Waiters 15/2 = 17 in 22 (30.9)
G Washington Dion Waiters 19/4 = 23 in 21 (43.8)
NC State Dion Waiters 22/3 = 25 in 32 (31.3)
Bucknell Kris Joseph 17/3 = 20 in 29 (27.6) Rakeem Christmas 10/0 in 14 = 28.6
Tulane Kris Joseph 13/3= 16 in 28 (22.9) and Dion Waiters 15/1 = 16 in 24 (26.7)
Brandon Triche 9/3 in 18 = 26.7 and Waiters
Seton Hall Dion Waiters 15/3 = 18 in 19 (37.8)
DePaul Kris Joseph 22/2 = 24 in 31 (31.0) Dion Waiters 13/3 in 20 = 32.0
Providence Scoop Jardine 10/11 = 21 in 25 (33.6)
Marquette Kris Joseph 17/4 = 21 in 38 (22.1) Brandon Triche 16/4 in 28 = 28.6
Villanova Dion Waiters 20/2 = 22 in 27 (32.5)
Providence Scoop Jardine 10/9 = 19 in 17 (44.7)
Pittsburgh Scoop Jardine 12/10 = 22 in 37 (23.8) Brandon Triche 12/3 in 19= 31.6
Using gross numbers, Waiters has been the ODOG 8 times, Joseph 7 times Jardine 4 times, Southerland and Triche twice each. If you go by per 40 minutes averages, Waiters had been the ODOG 8 times, Triche and Jardine 5 each, Southerland, Keita and Christmas once each. (They don’t add up to 20 because of ties).
Shooting Breakdown: SU was 18/32 from inside the arc, (.563), 5/18from outside, (.278) and 20/23 from the line (.870). Providence was 15/33 (.455), 7/23, (.304). and 12/23, (.522) 16 of our 23 baskets were assisted, (70%), vs. 13 of Pittsburgh’s 22, (59%).
Rebounding: Syracuse had 8 offensive and 20 defensive rebounds. Pittsburgh had 19 offensive and 21 defensive rebounds. That means that when we missed, we got the rebound 28% of the time. When they missed, they got the rebound 49% of the time. Pittsburgh had 14 turnovers, of which 8were Syracuse steals, (57%). Syracuse had 10 turnovers of which 6 were Pittsburgh steals, (60%). We had 42 “manufactured” possessions, (our rebounds + their turnovers). They had 50.
And, thanks to Blacksquirrels and Knicks411, I now understand how to compute “points per possession, (field goal attempts – offensive rebounds + turnovers plus 47.5% of free throws attempted) and here they are:
Syracuse: 50 FGA minus 8 offensive rebounds plus 10 turnovers plus 47.5% of 23 free throws = 62.925 possessions. The possessions can’t be more than one off so I’ll call that 63 possessions in which we scored 71 points or 1.127 points per possession. For the season it’s 1.171 .
Pittsburgh: 56-19+14 plus 47.5% of 23 = 61.925 possessions. Let’s call that 62 possessions, (so we won’t be more than one off) in which they scored 63 points or 1.016 points per possession. For the season it’s 0.884 .
Dry stretches were a problem last year- we’d go 8-10 minutes with the offense not functioning. I decided it should be a goal to score at least 15 points in every 10 minute “quarter” of the game, (college is the only level that doesn’t have quarters). You want to score more than that, of course, but if we can avoid falling under 15 in any ten minute period we should have a good scoring average because we’ll have 20 and 25 point quarters as well. The “quarterly” splits in this game were 19-9, 16-17, 16-19, 20-18. We’ve had 9 sub 15 point quarters this year and lost 18 quarters (of 80).
