Take all the positives: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks and subtract the negatives: missed field goals, miss free throws, turnovers and fouls. The result is “Net Points.” (NP). M = minutes. James Southerland +9NP in 25M season: +176NP in 341M per 40M: +20.6NP Brandon Triche +7NP in 25M season: +194NP in 456M per 40M: +17.0NP CJ Fair +6NP in 23M season: +205NP in 532M per 40M: +15.4NP Rakeem Christmas +6NP in 13M season: +85NP in 254M per 40M: +13.4NP Kris Joseph +5NP in 32M season: +259NP in 622M per 40M: +16.7NP Dion Waiters +3NP in 29M season: +245NP in 477M per 40M: +20.5NP Scoop Jardine 0NP in 28M season: +210NP in 472M per 40M: +17.8NP Baye Moussa Keita -2NP in 25M season: +82NP in 259M per 40M: +12.7NP Michael Carter-Williams 0NP in 0M season: +80NP in 226M per 40M: +14.2NP Fab Melo 0NP in 0M season: +184NP in 449M per 40M: +16.4NP Comment. I’m removing Mookie Jones form the list both because he’s no longer available to play and because he’s played on 38 minutes and the cut-off for my Historical Net Points records is 100 minutes played in a year. What a huge disappointment his career has been. (Kevin was the Jones we needed- imagine if we had him now in that power forward position.) This was the first game all year in which nobody on the team had 10 net points. Offensive Dude of the Game: James Southerland had 15 points but no assists. That still gave him the highest combined number of points and assists on the team and the highest per 40 minutes average (24.0). It was his third ODOG of the year. Dion Waiters leads with 8. Shooting Breakdown: SU was 11/30 from inside the arc, (.367: for the year we are .537), 7/23 from outside, (.304) and 13/19 from the line (.684). Providence was 12/24 (.500), 8/16, (.500). and 19/27, (.704) 13 of our 18 baskets were assisted, (72%), vs. 17 of Notre Dame’s 20, (85%). Rebounding: Syracuse had 8 offensive and 17 defensive rebounds. Notre Dame had 9 offensive and 29 defensive rebounds. That means that when we missed, we got the rebound 22% of the time. When they missed, they got the rebound 35% of the time. Notre Dame had 17 turnovers, of which 9 were Syracuse steals, (53%). Syracuse had 9 turnovers of which 2 were Notre Dame steals, (22%). We had 42 “manufactured” possessions, (our rebounds + their turnovers). They had 47. It was the second straight game where we lost this battle after losing only to Marshall previously. And, thanks to Blacksquirrels and Knicks411, I now understand how to compute “points per possession, (field goal attempts – offensive rebounds + turnovers plus 47.5% of free throws attempted) and here they are: Syracuse: 53 FGA minus 8 offensive rebounds plus 9 turnovers plus 47.5% of 19 free throws = 63.025 possessions. The possessions can’t be more than one off so I’ll call that 62 possessions in which we scored 58 points or 0.935 points per possession. For the season it’s 1.161. Notre Dame: 40-9+17 plus 47.5% of 27 = 60.825 possessions. Let’s call that 61 possessions, (so we won’t be more than one off) in which they scored 67 points or 1.098 points per possession. For the season it’s 0.893. Dry stretches were a problem last year- we’d go 8-10 minutes with the offense not functioning. I decided it should be a goal to score at least 15 points in every 10 minute “quarter” of the game, (college is the only level that doesn’t have quarters). You want to score more than that, of course, but if we can avoid falling under 15 in any ten minute period we should have a good scoring average because we’ll have 20 and 25 point quarters as well. The “quarterly” splits in this game were 14-23, 9-12, 12-15, 23-17. We’ve had 12 sub 15 point quarters this year and lost 21 quarters (of 84). It was the first time we’d lost three quarters in a game this year. The NC State was the only previous one in which we’d lost two. It was also the first game in which we’d had three sub 15 point quarters. Only against Marshall and Florida did we previously have two.
