Take all the positives: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks and subtract the negatives: missed field goals, miss free throws, turnovers and fouls. The result is “Net Points.” (NP). M = minutes. Brandon Triche +20NP in 35M season: +214NP in 491M per 40M: +17.4NP Kris Joseph +15NP in 35M season: +274NP in 657M per 40M: +16.7NP Scoop Jardine +14NP in 30M season: +224NP in 502M per 40M: +17.8NP Rakeem Christmas +11NP in 27M season: +96NP in 281M per 40M: +13.7NP James Southerland +5NP in 25M season: +181NP in 366M per 40M: +19.8NP CJ Fair +3NP in 20M season: +208NP in 552M per 40M: +15.1NP Michael Carter-Williams +1NP in 3M season: +81NP in 229M per 40M: +14.1NP Baye Moussa Keita +1NP in 13M season: +83NP in 272M per 40M: +12.2NP Fab Melo 0NP in 0M season: +184NP in 449M per 40M: +16.4NP Dion Waiters -1NP in 12M season: +244NP in 489M per 40M: +20.0NP Comment: Aside from Rakeem Christmas much improved performance, this was about the veterans: junior Brandon Triche and seniors Kris Joseph and Scoop Jardine. I’ve mentioned that I’ve never seen a team where every player was a 10NP per 40 guy before. If Dion Waiters has another bad game Saturday we could be without a 20NP per 40 guy for the first time this year. Offensive Dude of the Game: Scoop Jardine had 13 points and 6 assists, beating out Kris Joseph who had 17 points but no assists. It was the 5th time Scoop won the ODOG. Dion Waiters still leads with 8. Shooting Breakdown: SU was 23/44 (.523) from inside the arc, (after being 11/30 vs. Notre Dame), 3/12 from outside, (.250) and 5/15 from the line (.333). Cincinnati was 13/36 (.361), (Notre Dame had been 12/24) 8/25, (.320). and 3/9, (.333) 12 of our 26 baskets were assisted, (46%), vs. 16 of Cincinnati’s 21, (76%). Rebounding: Syracuse had 13 offensive and 27 defensive rebounds. Cincinnati had 15 offensive and 25 defensive rebounds. That means that when we missed, we got the rebound 34% of the time. When they missed, they got the rebound 36% of the time. Cincinnati had 11 turnovers, of which 6 were Syracuse steals, (55%). Syracuse had 8 turnovers of which 3 were Cincinnati steals, (38%). We had 51 “manufactured” possessions, (our rebounds + their turnovers). They had 48. And, thanks to Blacksquirrels and Knicks411, I now understand how to compute “points per possession, (field goal attempts – offensive rebounds + turnovers plus 47.5% of free throws attempted) and here they are: Syracuse: 56 FGA minus 13 offensive rebounds plus 8 turnovers plus 47.5% of 15 free throws = 58.125 possessions. The possessions can’t be more than one off so I’ll call that 59 possessions in which we scored 60 points or 1.016 points per possession. For the season it’s 1.155 . Cincinnati: 61-15+11 plus 47.5% of 9 = 61.275 possessions. Let’s call that 60 possessions, (so we won’t be more than one off) in which they scored 53 points or 0.883 points per possession. For the season it’s 0.892 . Dry stretches were a problem last year- we’d go 8-10 minutes with the offense not functioning. I decided it should be a goal to score at least 15 points in every 10 minute “quarter” of the game, (college is the only level that doesn’t have quarters). You want to score more than that, of course, but if we can avoid falling under 15 in any ten minute period we should have a good scoring average because we’ll have 20 and 25 point quarters as well. The “quarterly” splits in this game were 15-17, 13-8, 12-16, 20-12. We’ve had 14 sub 15 point quarters this year,(5 in the last two games), and lost 23 quarters (of 88- also 5 in the last two games).
