Take all the positives: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks and subtract the negatives: missed field goals, miss free throws, turnovers and fouls. The result is “Net Points.” (NP). M = minutes. Dion Waiters +16NP in 21M season: +258NP in 539M per 40M: +19.1NP Kris Joseph +16NP in 29M season: +309NP in 724M per 40M: +17.1NP Michael Carter-Williams +15NP in 17M season: +96NP in 246M per 40M: +15.6NP CJ Fair +15NP in 25M season: +231NP in 603M per 40M: +15.3NP Fab Melo +14NP in 21M season: +199NP in 473M per 40M: +16.8NP Rakeem Christmas +9NP in 16M season: +93NP in 311M per 40M: +12.0NP Baye Moussa Keita +6NP in 8M season: +96NP in 305M per 40M: +12.6NP Scoop Jardine +5NP in 15M season: +236NP in 544M per 40M: +17.4NP James Southerland +5NP in 17M season: +189NP in 400M per 40M: +18.9NP Brandon Triche +3NP in 26M season: +226NP in 541M per 40M: +16.7NP Comment: The Net Point averages are getting so close one wonders if by the end of the year they might all be the same. Michael Carter-Williams, in particular seems poised to rise up the charts. If he, Keita and Christmas have decent games vs. Georgetown, we could have ten guys with 100 net points. Offensive Dude of the Game: Dion Waiters had 14 points and 4 assists, for a total of 18 ‘points’ in 21 minutes, although Michael Carter-Williams performed at a greater rate, (16 ‘points’ in 17 minutes). It was the 9th time Waiters has been the ODOG. Dion still leads the team with 9. The completion was very close in this game as Dion had 18 ‘points’, Kris Joseph 17, CJ Fair 17 Carter-Williams 16 and Fab Melo 14. Shooting Breakdown: SU was 32/49 (.653) from inside the arc, 7/21 from outside, (.333) and 10/14 from the line (.714). St. John’s was 16/42 (.381), 7/15, (.467). and 17/28, (.607) 23 of our 39 baskets were assisted, (59%), vs. 14 of St. John’s 23, (61%). Rebounding: Syracuse had 16 offensive and 26 defensive rebounds. St. John’s had 13 offensive and 18 defensive rebounds. That means that when we missed, we got the rebound 47% of the time. When they missed, they got the rebound 33% of the time. St. John’s had 11 turnovers, of which 5 were Syracuse steals, (45.5%). Syracuse had 11 turnovers of which 6 were St. John’s steals, (54.5%). We had 53 “manufactured” possessions, (our rebounds + their turnovers). They had 42. And, thanks to Blacksquirrels and Knicks411, I now understand how to compute “points per possession, (field goal attempts – offensive rebounds + turnovers plus 47.5% of free throws attempted) and here they are: Syracuse: 70 FGA minus 16 offensive rebounds plus 11turnovers plus 47.5% of 14 free throws = 71.650 possessions. The possessions can’t be more than one off so I’ll call that 71 possessions in which we scored 95 points or 1.338 points per possession. For the season it’s 1.160. St. John‘s: 57-13+11 plus 47.5% of 28 = 68.300 possessions. Let’s call that 70 possessions, (so we won’t be more than one off) in which they scored 70 points or 1.000 points per possession. For the season it’s 0.902 . Dry stretches were a problem last year- we’d go 8-10 minutes with the offense not functioning. I decided it should be a goal to score at least 15 points in every 10 minute “quarter” of the game, (college is the only level that doesn’t have quarters). You want to score more than that, of course, but if we can avoid falling under 15 in any ten minute period we should have a good scoring average because we’ll have 20 and 25 point quarters as well. The “quarterly” splits in this game were 20-14, 21-13, 25-14, 29-29. We’ve had 16 sub 15 point quarters this year and lost 25 quarters (of 96).
