Take all the positives: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks and subtract the negatives: missed field goals, miss free throws, turnovers and fouls. The result is “Net Points.” (NP). M = minutes.

Scoop Jardine +27NP in 30M season: +267NP in 606M per 40M: +17.6NP
CJ Fair +26NP in 38M season: +261NP in 679M per 40M: +15.4NP
Dion Waiters +20NP in 30M season: +283NP in 604M per 40M: +18.7NP
Kris Joseph +9NP in 35M season: +343NP in 804M per 40M: +17.1NP
Fab Melo +6NP in 22M season: +220NP in 534M per 40M: +16.5NP
James Southerland +1NP in 5M season: +189NP in 410M per 40M: +18.4NP
Brandon Triche 0NP in 17M season: +236NP in 579M per 40M: +16.3NP
Baye Moussa Keita 0NP in 18M season: +94NP in 328M per 40M: +11.5NP
Michael Carter-Williams 0NP in 2M season: +97NP in 250M per 40M: +15.5NP
Rakeem Christmas 0NP in 2M season: +92NP in 316M per 40M: +11.6NP

Comment: Scoop Jardine has 267 NP in 606 minutes. Dion Waiters has 283NP in 604 minutes. That’s not a huge difference. Why do we think so much more highly of Dion than we do of Scoop? Style points?

Offensive Dude of the Game: Scoop Jardine won it for the 6th time with 21 points, (on 8 for 9 shooting, including 4 for 4 from three point range) and 6 assists. Dion Waiters has won it 8 times.
Shooting Breakdown: SU was 22/38 (we were .359 vs. Georgetown) from inside the arc, 10/16 from outside, (.625) and 11/17 from the line (.647). Connecticut was 15/33 (.455), 8/19, (.421), and 13/21, (.619) 18 of our 32 baskets were assisted, (56%), vs. 16 of Connecticut’s 23, (70%).

Rebounding: Syracuse had 8 offensive and 23 defensive rebounds. Connecticut had 12 offensive and 17 defensive rebounds. That means that when we missed, we got the rebound 32% of the time. When they missed, they got the rebound 34% of the time. Connecticut had 14 turnovers, of which 7 were Syracuse steals, (50%). Syracuse had 9 turnovers of which 4 were Connecticut steals, (44%). We had 45 “manufactured” possessions, (our rebounds + their turnovers). They had 38.

And, thanks to Blacksquirrels and Knicks411, I now understand how to compute “points per possession, (field goal attempts – offensive rebounds + turnovers plus 47.5% of free throws attempted) and here they are:

Syracuse: 54 FGA minus 8 offensive rebounds plus 9 turnovers plus 47.5% of 17 free throws = 63.075 possessions. The possessions can’t be more than one off so I’ll call that 63 possessions in which we scored 85 points or 1.349 points per possession. For the season it’s 1.161.

Connecticut: 52-12+14 plus 47.5% of 21 = 63.975 possessions. Let’s call that 64 possessions, (so we won’t be more than one off) in which they scored 67 points or 1.046 points per possession. For the season it’s 0.910.

Dry stretches were a problem last year- we’d go 8-10 minutes with the offense not functioning. I decided it should be a goal to score at least 15 points in every 10 minute “quarter” of the game, (college is the only level that doesn’t have quarters). You want to score more than that, of course, but if we can avoid falling under 15 in any ten minute period we should have a good scoring average because we’ll have 20 and 25 point quarters as well. The “quarterly” splits in this game were 17-15, 26-19, 18-18, 24-15. We’ve had 17 sub 15 point quarters this year and lost 26 quarters (of 104). The 24-15 final quarter was our best since the Eastern Michigan game in November.
