Take all the positives: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks and subtract the negatives: missed field goals, miss free throws, turnovers and fouls. The result is “Net Points.” (NP). M = minutes.

CJ Fair +29NP in 38M season: +297NP in 752M per 40M: +15.8NP
Scoop Jardine +17NP in 37M season: +283NP in 669M per 40M: +16.9NP
Fab Melo +11NP in 28M season: +246NP in 599M per 40M: +16.4NP
Kris Joseph +10NP in 37M season: +361NP in 866M per 40M: +16.7NP
Baye Moussa Keita +2NP in 10M season: +96NP in 341M per 40M: +11.3NP
Brandon Triche +1NP in 16M season: +242NP in 618M per 40M: +15.7NP
Rakeem Christmas +1NP in 4M season: +93NP in 322M per 40M: +11.6NP
James Southerland -2NP in 3M season: +195NP in 431M per 40M: +18.1NP
Dion Waiters -2NP in 27M season: +287NP in 662M per 40M: +17.3NP
Michael Carter-Williams 0NP in 0M season: +97NP in 250M per 40M: +15.5NP

Comment: Scoop Jardine went from 27 NP in one game, (thanks to 8 for 9 shooting) to -1 NP in the next game, (thanks to 0 for 8 shooting), to 17 in the next game. But CJ was clearly the player of the game.

James Southerland in the 13 non-conference games played 211 minutes, scored 111 points, pulled down 40 rebounds, dished out 10 assists, made 18 steals, blocked 14 shots, was 23 for 32 on two point shots (.719), 18 for 41 on treys, (.439) and 11/17 from the line, (.647), had 4 turnovers and committed 12 fouls. Net Points:

16.2m 21.0p 7.6r 1.9a 3.2s 2.7b = 36.4+ 6.1mfg 1.1mft 0.8to 2.3pf = 10.3- = 26.1NP 13.8OE, 12.3FG.

Statistically, he was easily the best player on the team.

In the 15 games since he’s played 220 minutes, scored 79 points, grabbed 44 rebounds, made only two assists, stole the ball 8 times and blocked 8 shots. He’s 25 for 46 from inside the arc, (.543), only 8 for 42 from outside (.190) and 5 for 7 from the line, (.714). He’s committed 6 turnovers and fouled 22 times. Net Points:

14.7m 14.4p 8.0r 0.4a 1.5s 1.5b = 25.8+ 10.0mfg 0.4mft 1.1to 4.0pf = 15.5- = 10.3NP 4.0OE 6.3FG.

He’s not been a terrible player. It’s not that he can’t do anything but shoot so if he’s missing he shouldn’t be out there. It’s just that CJ Fair does most things besides shoot better than James and CJ is pretty good at that, too. James has to somehow find his shot to be able to help this team down the stretch.

Offensive Dude of the Game: CJ Fair had 21 points and no assists, but that topped by Scoop Jardine’s 17 points and 7 assist. Scoop played 37 minutes to 38 for CJ. He thus won the gross ‘hockey points’ title for the 7th time, (Dion has 9) and is tied with Dion for the per minute lead with 8 each.

Shooting Breakdown: SU was 19/36 (.528) from inside the arc, 5/12 from outside, (.417 - after .067 vs. Louisville) and 21/31 from the line (.677). Rutgers was 23/44 (.523: Biruta was 9 for 14, his teammates 14 for 30), 3/18, (.167), and 9/11, (.818) 11 of our 24 baskets were assisted, (46%), vs. 15 of Rutgers 26, (58%).

Rebounding: Syracuse had 7 offensive and 22 defensive rebounds. Rutgers had 13 offensive and 21 defensive rebounds. That means that when we missed, we got the rebound 25% of the time. When they missed, they got the rebound 37% of the time. Rutgers had 12 turnovers, of which 9 were Syracuse steals, (75%). Syracuse had 10 turnovers of which 6 were Rutgers steals, (60%). We had 41 “manufactured” possessions, (our rebounds + their turnovers). They had 44. In our first 19 games, we lost the possession battle once. We are 4-5 beginning with the Pitt game.

And, thanks to Blacksquirrels and Knicks411, I now understand how to compute “points per possession, (field goal attempts – offensive rebounds + turnovers plus 47.5% of free throws attempted) and here they are:

Syracuse: 48 FGA minus 7 offensive rebounds plus 10 turnovers plus 47.5% of 31 free throws = 65.725 possessions. The possessions can’t be more than one off so I’ll call that 66 possessions in which we scored 74 points or 1.121 points per possession. For the season it’s 1.152.

Rutgers: 62-13+12 plus 47.5% of 11 = 66.225 possessions. Let’s call that 66 possessions, (so we won’t be more than one off) in which they scored 64 points or 0.970 points per possession. For the season it’s 0.911.

Dry stretches were a problem last year- we’d go 8-10 minutes with the offense not functioning. I decided it should be a goal to score at least 15 points in every 10 minute “quarter” of the game, (college is the only level that doesn’t have quarters). You want to score more than that, of course, but if we can avoid falling under 15 in any ten minute period we should have a good scoring average because we’ll have 20 and 25 point quarters as well. The “quarterly” splits in this game were 16-15, 24-19, 16-16, 18-14. We’ve had 19 sub 15 point quarters this year and lost 28 quarters (of 112).
