Take all the positives: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks and subtract the negatives: missed field goals, miss free throws, turnovers and fouls. The result is “Net Points.” (NP). M = minutes.

CJ Fair +18NP in 37M season: +315NP in 789M per 40M: +16.0NP
Scoop Jardine +15NP in 37M season: +298NP in 706M per 40M: +16.9NP
Dion Waiters +10NP in 19M season: +297NP in 681M per 40M: +17.4NP
Fab Melo +7NP in 33M season: +253NP in 632M per 40M: +16.0NP
Kris Joseph +7NP in 36M season: +368NP in 902M per 40M: +16.3NP
Baye Moussa Keita +2NP in 7M season: +98NP in 348M per 40M: +11.3NP
Brandon Triche -4NP in 24M season: +238NP in 642M per 40M: +14.8NP
Rakeem Christmas -1NP in 1M season: +92NP in 323M per 40M: +11.4NP
James Southerland -1NP in 6M season: +194NP in 437M per 40M: +17.8NP
Michael Carter-Williams 0NP in 0M season: +97NP in 250M per 40M: +15.5NP

Comment: I wonder if, by the end of the season, all our top guys will have the same NP per 40 average? The gap between them gets narrower and narrower, although Brandon Triche is fading.
Offensive Dude of the Game: Scoop Jardine had 15 points and 4 assists for 19 hockey points in 37 minutes (20.5 per 40) Dion Waiters had 9/1 = 10 in 19minutes (21.1 per 40). Scoop ahs been the ODOG 8 times and Dion 9 based on either gross numbers or 40 minute averages. They lead the team in each category, although Kris Joseph has also been the ODOG 8 times, based on gross numbers.

Shooting Breakdown: SU was 16/46 (..348: we are .528 for the season) from inside the arc, 3/9 from outside, (.333) and 15/23 from the line (.652). South Florida was 16/35 (.457), 4/17, (.235), and 4/4, (1.000) 11 of our 19 baskets were assisted, (58%), vs. 11 of South Florida’s 20, (55%).

POP: I’ll credit the Axeman for naming this. A common stat is “points in the paint”. But what about the points outside the paint? The game gets a lot harder if you have to plow through the defense to get to the basket to score. Jump shots, (and not just three pointers), are an important part of any team’s offense. You can’t rely on them too much as they are the most inconsistent part of the game but you have to have the capacity to score over the defense or else you are likely to struggle. The formula is simple: Total points minus points in the paint minus free throws. We’ve averaged 26 ’POP’ per game this year. Through the Connecticut game it was 28. Since then it’s been: 5 vs. Louisville, 17 vs. Rutgers and 13 tonight vs. South Florida. It’s hard to believe we can have a good post season run with that kind of production. We’ve got plenty of snap and crackle. We need some POP.

Rebounding: Syracuse had 11 offensive and 20 defensive rebounds. South Florida had 12 offensive and 29 defensive rebounds. That means that when we missed, we got the rebound 25% of the time. When they missed, they got the rebound 37.5% of the time. South Florida had 18 turnovers, of which 11 were Syracuse steals, (61%). Syracuse had 9 turnovers of which 5 were South Florida steals, (56%). We had 49 “manufactured” possessions, (our rebounds + their turnovers). They had 50. In our first 19 games, we lost the possession battle once. We are 4-6 beginning with the Pitt game.

And, thanks to Blacksquirrels and Knicks411, I now understand how to compute “points per possession, (field goal attempts – offensive rebounds + turnovers plus 47.5% of free throws attempted) and here they are:

Syracuse: 55 FGA minus 11 offensive rebounds plus 9 turnovers plus 47.5% of 23 free throws = 63.925 possessions. The possessions can’t be more than one off so I’ll call that 62 possessions in which we scored 56 points or 0.903 points per possession. For the season it’s 1.144.

South Florida: 52-12+18 plus 47.5% of 4 = 59.9 possessions. Let’s call that 62 possessions, (so we won’t be more than one off) in which they scored 48 points or 0.774 points per possession. For the season it’s 0.906.

Dry stretches were a problem last year- we’d go 8-10 minutes with the offense not functioning. I decided it should be a goal to score at least 15 points in every 10 minute “quarter” of the game, (college is the only level that doesn’t have quarters). You want to score more than that, of course, but if we can avoid falling under 15 in any ten minute period we should have a good scoring average because we’ll have 20 and 25 point quarters as well. The “quarterly” splits in this game were 5-16, 19-4, 20-15, 12-13. We’ve had 21 sub 15 point quarters this year and lost 30 quarters (of 116).
