Take all the positives: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks and subtract the negatives: missed field goals, miss free throws, turnovers and fouls. The result is “Net Points.” (NP). M = minutes.
Baye Moussa Keita +9NP in 24M season: +113NP in 431M per 40M: +10.5NP
Scoop Jardine +9NP in 33M season: +357NP in 916M per 40M: +15.6NP
Rakeem Christmas +6NP in 16M season: +128NP in 425M per 40M: +12.0NP
Brandon Triche +6NP in 28M season: +287NP in 834M per 40M: +13.8NP
CJ Fair +6NP in 31M season: +361NP in 977M per 40M: +14.8NP
Kris Joseph +3NP in 37M season: +416NP in 1192M per 40M: +14.0NP
Dion Waiters +0NP in 20M season: +387NP in 891M per 40M: +17.4NP
James Southerland -1NP in 11M season: +263NP in 593M per 40M: +17.7NP
Michael Carter-Williams 0NP in 0M season: +105NP in 269M per 40M: +15.6NP
Fab Melo 0NP in 0M season: +308NP in 763M per 40M: +16.1NP
Comment: In our final game, no one player had 10 net points, even though they’ve all been averaging that all season, (per 40 minutes, anyway). This is the only team we’ve ever had with 10 players who averaged 10NP/40 for the season.

Offensive Dude of the Game: Scoop Jardine won it on gross numbers, (14 points and 6 assists = 18), as he has in every game of the tournament. He also won the per 40 minute title (24.2). Using gross numbers, With four ODOGs in four NCAA tournament games, Scoop Jardine passed Dion Waiters, who had been #1 all season, with 12 ODOGs Waiters has been the ODOG 11 times, Joseph 9 times, Southerland and Triche 4 times and Fair once. If you go by per 40 minutes averages, Waiters has been the ODOG 12 times, Triche and Jardine 9 times, Southerland 3 times, Joseph twice , Keita, Christmas and Carter-Williams once each. (They don’t add up to 28 because of ties).

Shooting Breakdown: SU was 16/37 (.432: we are .520 on the season- we were .527 last year and .571 two years ago) from inside the arc, 6/16 from outside, (..375) and 20/25 from the line (.800). Ohio State was 17/38 (.447), 4/13, (.308), and 31/42, (.738) 9 of our 22 baskets were assisted, (41%), vs. 10 of Ohio State‘s 21, (43%).

POP: I’ll credit the Axeman for naming this. A common stat is “points in the paint”. But what about the points outside the paint? The game gets a lot harder if you have to plow through the defense to get to the basket to score. Jump shots, (and not just three pointers), are an important part of any team’s offense. You can’t rely on them too much as they are the most inconsistent part of the game but you have to have the capacity to score over the defense or else you are likely to struggle. The formula is simple: Total points minus points in the paint minus free throws.
We scored 70 points in this game, 28 in the paint and 20 from the line so he had 22 POP in this game. We have 976 points outside the paint in 37 games, an average of 26.4 per game. We’ve scored 2727 points, or 35.8%, have come outside the paint. We’ve had 522 POP in 19 home games, (27.5), 454 in 18 games away from the Dome, (25.2). If you count only “true” road games, it’s 244 in 10 (24.4).

Rebounding: Syracuse had 8 offensive and 25 defensive rebounds. Ohio State had 14 offensive and 25 defensive rebounds. That means that when we missed, we got the rebound 24% of the time. When they missed, they got the rebound 44% of the time. Ohio State had 12 turnovers, of which 6 were Syracuse steals, (50%). Syracuse had 12 turnovers of which 4 were Ohio State steals, (33%). We had 38 “manufactured” possessions, (our rebounds + their turnovers). They had 51. -13 is the worst deficit this year. For the year we’ve manufactured 1874 possessions to 1736 for the opposition so we are up +138 in 37 games= +3.7 per game.

And, thanks to Blacksquirrels and Knicks411, I now understand how to compute “points per possession, (field goal attempts – offensive rebounds + turnovers plus 47.5% of free throws attempted) and here they are:

Syracuse: 53 FGA minus 8 offensive rebounds plus 12 turnovers plus 47.5% of 25 free throws = 68.875 possessions. The possessions can’t be more than one off so I’ll call that 69 possessions in which we scored 70 points or 1.014 points per possession. For the season it’s 1.126.

Ohio State: 51-14+12 plus 47.5% of 42 = 68.95 possessions. Let’s call that 69 possessions, (so we won’t be more than one off) in which they scored 77 points or 1.116 points per possession. For the season it’s 0.927.

Dry stretches were a problem last year- we’d go 8-10 minutes with the offense not functioning. I decided it should be a goal to score at least 15 points in every 10 minute “quarter” of the game, (college is the only level that doesn’t have quarters). You want to score more than that, of course, but if we can avoid falling under 15 in any ten minute period we should have a good scoring average because we’ll have 20 and 25 point quarters as well. The “quarterly” splits in this game were 18-21, 11-8, 17-23, 24-25. We’ve had 33 sub 15 point quarters this year and lost 40 quarters (of 148). Here are the averages per quarter: 15-14, 19-12, 18-17, 21-18. We lost 3 of 4 quarters in three games this year- Notre Dame and the last two.
