Take all the positives: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks and subtract the negatives: missed field goals, miss free throws, turnovers and fouls. The result is “Net Points.” (NP). M = minutes.
CJ Fair +18NP in 37M season: +18NP in 37M per 40M: +19.5NP
Michael Carter-Williams +14NP in 32M season: +14NP in 32M per 40M: +17.5NP
Brandon Triche +13NP in 39M season: +13NP in 39M per 40M: +13.3NP
Rakeem Christmas +8NP in 25M season: +8NP in 25M per 40M: +12.8NP
Trevor Cooney +1NP in 4M season: +1NP in 4M per 40M: +10.0NP
Baye Moussa Keita +4NP in 23M season: +4NP in 23M per 40M: +7.0NP
James Southerland +1NP in 25M season: +1NP in 25M per 40M: +1.6NP
Jerami Grant -1NP in 6M season: -1NP in 6M per 40M: -6.7NP
DaJuan Coleman -2NP in 9M season: -2NP in 9M per 40M: -8.9NP
Comment: Fair, Carter-Williams and Triche are a pretty good triumvirate but we really need more form James Southerland to make it a quartet. Christmas and Keita handle the center position. But we need a lot more form the three freshman, Coleman, Cooney and grant, to be an elite team. But we’re just one game in, far too early for judgments.

Shooting Breakdown: SU was 24/52 (.462) from inside the arc, 1/4 from outside, (.250) and 11/19 from the line (.579). San Diego State was 16/45 (.356), 1/18, (.056), and 14/33, (.424), a really dismal performance. 9 of our 25 baskets were assisted, (36%), vs. 9 of San Diego State‘s 17, (53%).

POP: I’ll credit the Axeman for naming this. A common stat is “points in the paint”. But what about the points outside the paint? The game gets a lot harder if you have to plow through the defense to get to the basket to score. Jump shots, (and not just three pointers), are an important part of any team’s offense. You can’t rely on them too much as they are the most inconsistent part of the game but you have to have the capacity to score over the defense or else you are likely to struggle. The formula is simple: Total points minus points in the paint minus free throws.
We scored 62 points in this game, 44 in the paint and 11 from the line so he had 7 POP in this game, or 11.3%. San Diego State had 5 POP, or 10.2%. We averaged 26.4 POP last year, 35.8% of our points. Of course those games weren’t played on an aircraft carrier.

The “Offensive Dude of the Game”, (points + assists) was Michael Carter-Williams, with 17 + 4 for 21, beating Brandon Triche 15 + 5 = 20 and CJ Fair, 17 +1 = 18.

Rebounding: Syracuse had 10 offensive and 35 defensive rebounds. San Diego State had 20 offensive and 24 defensive rebounds. That means that when we missed, we got the rebound 29% of the time. When they missed, they got the rebound 36% of the time. San Diego State had 16 turnovers, of which 12 were Syracuse steals, (75%). Syracuse had 18 turnovers of which 14 were San Diego State steals, (78%). We had 61 “manufactured” possessions, (our rebounds + their turnovers). They had 62.

And, thanks to Blacksquirrels and Knicks411, I now understand how to compute “points per possession, (field goal attempts – offensive rebounds + turnovers plus 47.5% of free throws attempted) and here they are:

Syracuse: 56 FGA minus 10 offensive rebounds plus 18 turnovers plus 47.5% of 19 free throws = 73.025 possessions. The possessions can’t be more than one off so I’ll call that 73 possessions in which we scored 62 points or 0.838 points per possession. Last season it was 1.126.

San Diego State: 63-20+16 plus 47.5% of 33 = 74.675 possessions. Let’s call that 74 possessions, (so we won’t be more than one off) in which they scored 49 points or 0.662 points per possession. Last season it was 0.927.

I decided it should be a goal to score at least 15 points in every 10 minute “quarter” of the game, (college is the only level that doesn’t have quarters). You want to score more than that, of course, but if we can avoid falling under 15 in any ten minute period we should have a good scoring average because we’ll have 20 and 25 point quarters as well. The “quarterly” splits in this game were 17-7, 16-12, 14-14, 15-16. Last year the averages per quarter were: 15-14, 19-12, 18-17, 21-18.
